Rick’s Targets

So we got Iona's 2nd (arguably 1st), 3rd, and 4th best players. That's great, they all deserve spots on our team. It's also nice to see Pitino's players clearly enjoyed playing for him, but as everyone is saying we really need a couple impact players. IMO we still only have one player (Soriano) who is projected to be an above average BE starter.

I get the budding angst and share some of it, but what I keep falling back on is that this is Rick Pitino, not Norm Roberts, late Steve Lavin, nor Chris Mullin---it's Pitino and this will not be the BUT of his career.
IF Thomasson commits. that'd make 4 MAAC players, 1 Southern Conference player, and 1 High Major guy, leaving 4 ships left.
At this point I'm relying on a couple notions--that could be 100% wrong--that #1 these guys are not mid-major players, Rick believes they would work in the BEC as key rotation players (Jenkins, Slazinski, Thomasson) with Alleyne, the others (Conway, Davis) depth, and #3, that he believes he has a good shot at 2 - 3 impact guys (Silas D, Mackenzie M, + ?), plus maybe Grady Dunlap.
I'm a tad nervous, but I think it'll be fun and, to paraphrase Quinn: Buckle Up...for the excitement.
Rick is a great coach but not a miracle worker. Assuming we sign Thomasson, we still need two quality signees to compete for top 4 or 5 spot in Big East next year imho and from a positive perspective there is still time for that to happen.

From someone who has no issues with what Pitino is doing so far, you could make an argument we missed out on Iona’s top 2 players. Nelly Junior Joseph definitely within their top 3.

Agree 100% NCJ that he's not a miracle worker.
He knows he needs players, thinks he can get a couple this cycle, and also believes a few of his MAAC recruits will contribute, maybe 1 - 2 even thrive, in the BEC.
I'd love for Rick to reel in Silas D, plus a quality Big.
We shall see

Actually think Jenkins is as good as Clayton.
Would've loved both, but he may think Thomasson will form a great 1 - 2 with Daniss.
I also have to believe Rick knows what he's doing.
"Strap In for the fun," Quinn said.

That's fair, I did watch some Iona games but by no means am I an expert. I believe Quinn and Nelly are forwards, but Quinn was hurt most of the year so Nelly had a lot of minutes, right? Just from what I've read Quinn has a lot more upside so I'd prefer him over Nelly, but regardless I definitely want an impact big especially since Quinn is injury-prone.

Still time for others to pop up but the only real difference maker we're involved with now is Mgbako who is a major long shot. Demary would be a strong long term piece and would have his flashes off the bat but going to be difficult to depend on a 4 star Freshman to play major minutes for a top half Big East team.

Hoping some new names pop up soon but looking like Pitino is going to have to work some magic to field a contending team in year one.

So many of you believe Pitino could have made the tournament with last years team. Just curious, who were the “impact” players from last year that are gone now? Not players who people liked or felt ”busted their ass” but players who truly consistently, positively, impacted games. In my eyes there was one, Soriano, who is still here.
I have no idea how good the players Pitino has recruited so far are because I don’t remember ever seeing any of them play but I certainly trust his time proven judgement and am not afraid to go out on a limb and say the product on the court next year will be light years ahead of the last couple of years, indeed, the last couple of decades, except for the occasional rare anomaly teams.
First off, the team will play real defense, not poke and hope for steals with fake hustle, with the backup plan being praying teams are off from wide open, most times from 3. Players will exhibit real hustle, not act like fighting for a rebound or loose ball will somehow land them in jail.
They will run an offense and share the ball, passing until they get an open shot, not heave ridiculous chucks that would have me screaming at whoever was on my team throwing that crap up in a playground game. Soriano will learn to kick out from the post to shooters moving to open spots, not holding the ball as double teams come and teammates stand around watching, wondering what they should be doing. Players will play the last 5 minutes of close games the “right way”, not play like if they don’t make the “big play” the game isn’t worth winning.
In short, we will see a basketball team, playing intelligent, committed basketball which is why I think we will be far more competitive in the conference next year, regardless of how many impact players people feel we are missing. SJU has an impact coach, who has made a career out of molding impact teams.
He has brought in experienced mature players and as I posted before, I expect to see a team where the total is far greater than the sum of the parts; we shall see.

I’d add that Alleyne is a starting caliber big East transfer who played half game for the national champs. Only reason he didn’t start was because he had the best sg in the country in front of him in Hawkins. I’d like to land 2 more impact guys who have a few years eligibility that we can mold. Rhey will shape the class moving forward and see who we will carry into 2024.

Interesting words from the New recruit. MAY be an answer to why SOME of our former players MAY have opted to leave?

Quinn Slazinski on his role at St. John's: "There's no such thing as a role under Pitino. He doesn't give promises. That's why some [former players] were asking for their release [to transfer]. He gives people no promises. He's just a truthful, honest person. He knows the type of player I am."

Awesome post from a guy with creds.
Thank you.

Agree here. And we are finally bringing in players that can shoot, will understand spacing, and can convert at the FT line. Pitino isn't stupid. He knows the types of recruits he wants and hopes to land.

I’ll add that lots of people really feel like Rick P jettisoned everybody from the team, but I’m seeing it a bit differently. I think Rick P wanted to keep Soriano and the good character kids here, as well as Posh and Storr. I think he also felt he wanted to and maybe even obliged to bring some his best Iona guys over here. It was Posh and Storr that chose to leave.

We definitely need more talent for sure. After Thomasson which seems likely, I hope it’s 2-3 younger kids we can mold. Gotta keep a roster balance which isn’t easy with all these ships.

I agree with Logen that we will likely see a lot better basketball overall, and generally more skilled approach to offense than we have seen at sju in a long time.
