Rick’s Targets

Sounds like an NIL issue.
So much for his mother’s comments about being loyal to SJU. As you may recall, he previously reneged on his commitment to get more NIL $ before ultimately signing.

If we don’t have enough NIL $ to keep a player like Gardener with Pitino as coach how are we ever going to ever attract studs?

Maybe the funds are being spent in new directions. And Repole is in the fold so the money that Saint Johns can offer probably is much more.

Whatever it means, I’d like to keep Gardner. I think he’s gonna be really good and can help us right away.
You never want to lose one of your local recruits from a feeder school. I almost wish Gardner was able to convince AJ to return but with all the talk focused on pt and $ it's almost futile to spend too much energy on kids on the fence for those reasons.

I wouldn't be surprised if certain conferences break away from the NCAA and form partnerships with professional teams who would sign the players to contracts binding them to both the university and the sports conglomerate.
Ironically, players would go from freedom to transfer at will to having their contracts traded.

This is the athletic structure around the world. Just that no schools, at any level, are involved as universities are strictly academic institutions.

He was there one year, and how much have they really fed us?

I think Gardner is gone.
It's a local basketball prep power. There are few and far between left in NYC and you treat them like you appreciate their program and players.
They are no different than residential prep academies where players spend a year or two to refine their skills against a challenging schedule.
Whether it's Oak Hill, St. Thomas, St. Benedicts, Monteverde or LiLu, they are recruiting feeding ground and it used to matter if you rescinded offers.
That was before the NIL schemes being played by recruiters and recruits (agents).
Over the years CTK has been our closest fertile recruiting ground along with Molloy.
Unfortunately the proximity has been no advantage because we have not had a winning tradition in a quarter century before any of these kids were born.
The turnover in coaches hasn't helped our image either.
Since Pitino had virtually no NIL support at Iona he made do with some players he would not have recruited to Louisville.
He appears to have more grandiose plans for his time coaching at St. John's than he did in New Rochelle.

None of that has anything to do with what I said though.

I don't think Gardner comes but that's from his end, not ours.

Is what it is…. The Phoenix is rising…
Sincerely hope Gardner stays. If he doesn't, it doesn't rattle my belief that Pitino will put a competitive team on the floor next season and every year after that. I kinda like this new era....

In your brief statement you basically said "he's only been there one year". You seem to imply "something" there but you left it open-ended. We all know he is there one year. What's your point? I gave you rationale how that is common these days in basketball "academies". Do you not recruit them any harder?
Jakarr Sampson was a product of such a prep program.

"How much have they really fed us"???
CTK has produced quite a number of D1 players and schools like UNC and other ACC schools are regular visitors.
St. John's got what it could pre NIL.
Omar Cook, Malik Boothe, Jayson Williams, Erick Barkley and some girls players take exception to your blase attitude.

What you said Nostradsmus is you "don't think" Gardner comes.
Tea readers like you may be guessing right. Especially when mom seems to be negotiating better deals. Good for her and Gardner!
But if he blows up somewhere else and Rick Pitino brings in another David Jones, this forum will recall your "who cares" attitude with a smile.
Regardless of who has been coach, we have let more CTK players get away than any high school in NYC.
Speedy Claxton was one of those players. That's the same Speedy Claxton whose team beat Iona and Rick Pitino this past season and it didn't matter that Rick had Walt and Estrada in his backcourt.
Now, apply your tea reading skill and predict our first 5 recruits.
And no cheating by emailing Paultzman. He's retired to the good life in Florida.

You got all that from "I think Gardner is gone"? The only thing missing was some dumb comment about his hair.
