Rick’s Targets

A

I would bet Alleyne was much more highly regarded last year leaving Va Tech as a 4 year starter with good %s. The transfer ranking are trash outside of maybe the top 10-15. I’d still rather have more of those guys than not though.

Agreed. I think transfer rankings are silly. I tend to look at which other schools are recruiting them as the barometer.

I get not being happy with the recruiting class so far. I don't think any of us are jumping with joy. I also get being disappointed that we were not able to retain a few more kids from last season's roster and/or from the new recruits. What I don't get is not waiting until, at the very least, this roster is filled out before constantly stating what a crappy job Rick is doing.

One more time; Rick does not walk on water and is not infallible, but he is one of 5 greatest coaches and basketball minds of all time. Hasn't he earned the benefit of the doubt for at least the first few months of his tenure here?

Nope we got guys who played varsity in high school who can tell everyone that all these players suck and Rick is in over his head.

If we are not willing to give RICK PITINO a break and a little love and trust then who?
Who would be a better choice as our HC?
Exactly. There is no better choice. And we are fortunate. And RP & staff are working at a frenetic, driven pace…some flowers have bloomed…others are getting ready to penetrate above the grounds around CA and MSG…time for a little more water, sun and what else?
Oh yes Patience.
Difficult to wait. But part of the package.
We are witnessing a significant creation here and as our stoic friend and Redman fan Epictetus wrote, circa 1st century A.D.

Jets being Super Bowl contenders did happen suddenly LOL

If it's innuendo to suggest there was any issues with the past players it is also innuendo to suggest Pitino ran them off. I still have not seen one credible account about any individual meeting Pitino had with the players, only reports that he met with each one. The only other facts on the ground is that they put themselves in the portal seeking a better deal (financial, academic, playing time, location, or whatever does it for them) just like 1,500 other players. The idea that Pitino ran everyone off seems to be attributed to his comment that six to eight new players would be needed. It's not hard to get to those numbers.

Nyiwe and Mathis, (no future eligibility) - 2
Pinzon and Curbelo (seriously, this can't be an issue for anyone) - 2
The three freshman (fairly standard and they have never played a game at SJU) -3

That's seven right there. And Pitino said SIX to eight. If Gardner had stayed and the others above are taken out that's six. The coach changed and the players who came to SJU to play for a different coach decided to transfer. One of the main arguments for granting free transfer to players was always that a player comes to play for a coach not a school.

Guys you liked watching play are leaving. Sucks, I know, but that's the system now. This is not a Pitino thing, it's a college basketball thing. And it's not new, especially at SJU.

If anyone has any information that a guy like Stanley was asked to leave post it. I have seen nothing of the sort anywhere.

Another presser quote to clarify the 6-8:
"The one thing that I want to be honest with is that a lot of players probably won’t be back on this team, because they are probably not a good fit for me." goes on to say he's tough to play for yada, yada, yada.

Key word back (and ability to do so), ergo the frosh and grads don't count. Whether they ran away with their tails between their legs or were forced it is clear the intention was to start from pretty close to scratch. Not to just eject Pinzon and Curbelo. Whether that was entirely RP's call is not clear. I'm sure he saw value in Posh and Storr but still was tempered in what he was willing to offer them. No one else appears to have even been considered besides the three bigs staying on.

It is what it is and they are where they are. Let's Go Redmen!

In the end this is a forum. Would be pretty boring around here if the current roster and recruiting wasn’t discussed. Time will tell the final roster but in my opinion, which doesn’t really matter, it’s good to have an active board as long as everyone plays nice.

I’ve seen a few of the kids play but not all. I’m not judging anyone individually but instead commenting on the collective. I don’t think it’s controversial to say the class so far is underwhelming from a talent perspective. I think an objective person can make that judgment based on rankings, statistics, pedigree, past performance, video and who our competition was. It’s no secret that we’ve missed on a number of our top targets.
Your evaluation of talent leaves a lot to be desired.
1. Pitino has FIVE open spots to fill.
2. King, Curbelo, Stanley, Nyiwe, Pinzon were the definition of underwhelming talent. None had any influence on the outcome of games.
3. Posh and Storr will be replaced when all is said and done.
4. Targets are evolving every day. New targets appear.
5. Embrace the future because the past sucked.

I have no idea how good or bad SJU will be next year, and have no idea whether the new players will be a net positive or not. 106 pages on this chain so far and neither does anyone else. I am simply happy to root for basically an entirely new and rebooted basketball program because I just could not take one bit more of the past eight depressing years, and I'm only cutting it off there to make it post-Lavin.

8 years? Thanks for posting, Rumplestiltskin. ;)
