Red Storm Tip-Off

Not for anything... We deserve something good to happen like this... I try to always be positive on here, but it's hard to get kicked in the balls all the time as an SJU fan... I just want to enjoy what should be a memorable season if this is true.

Zagoria:

Breaking:

Mutsapha Heron has been cleared to play at St John's this season after getting an NCAA waiver, source tells me.

The school will announce it Tuesday.

Huge news for Chris Mullin's crew as they get Heron and return Shamorie Ponds to a strong lineup

Whatever minor details remain, trusting Cragg to shepherd this is wise. No sense getting nuts.

Having LJ this year is like having another Simon out there. They mirror each other physically and athletically and I’m pretty sure if they stood on opposite sidelines they could still hold each others hands. He was the best part of the scrimmage. The second best part is realizing that one of LJ, Simon, or Dixon will be our...SIXTH best scorer. Any one of them might have lead us in scoring Mullin’s first year.
Takeaways:

1. Crowd was surprisingly good...packed house.
2. Cragg was right there watching every bit of it and seems like a truly dedicated guy.
3. The new court is very refreshing and brightens up the arena...surprisingly the air was also perfect. It was not a sauna.
4. Yes it's only tip off but LJ looked absolutely insane. He was all over the place dunking, blocking, rebounding, stealing, threading needles passing, etc. He really reminds me of Jakarr Sampson but hopefully as a better shooter. He looked like the best player on the floor. Very athletic and can make acrobatic dunks.
5. Dixon looks like he will be at worst a solid addition on the bench
6. Roberts looked taller and longer than I expected...he may not be 7 ft tall but he is veryy lanky. Can be disruptive.
7. The performer Sheck Wes nearly fell backwards over a speaker during the concert before catching himself. By the way, he did not bring up politics, just did his show and left which was nice.
8. Hate to say it but doubt Caraher can give us much at this level...seemed to be in slow motion out there. Again only tip off but just my guess from seeing him play a bit. Hope he proves me wrong.
9. Went to Parson's after to have a few beers and wash down the Acquista's.
Thanks for the report. The fact that it was packed and not even advertised well, just really makes me wish they gave out free student tickets to all games. I believe it would really help the turnout and create dedicated fans long term.

My initial gut reaction to what my fellow posters have shared here:
Great enjoyable season ahead - perhaps surprisingly successful!
And why not!!!
all the best

As usual, spot on Mase!

If we start winning big, wonder would it be in realm of possibility and profit if MSG / SJU partner to host it at MSG?

Students should be free and then paid for anyone else to cover a 1-2 top notch performers that would draw.

Would think the media attention would be great for everyone involved.

Dear Mr. Cragg -
Among your many suggestions you are undoubtedly received - can we always recognize former players who attend current games - we posters have seen players who gave their all to the program and they sit in Alumni Hall seats sans recognition!
Just another way to enhance our program and bring it back ( to the top ) where it belongs!
Thanks and all the best
General W.T.Sherman :)

PS there was a time circa mid 1980s when president Ronald Reagan visited Queens and reflected how both America and St. Johns were #1!

Bleacher Report (380k followers on Twitter) and Barstool Sports (5+ million followers on instagram) posted videos from our concert. Serious publicity there.
How is the turnout??
It was very different from attending a regular season game. There were all these college kids! Some didn't even know the name of the coach!!! The music was very loud and unintelligible. They didn't play Frank Sinatra once!!!!
Can't wait for the first game for some peace and quiet.
On serious note, having even ONE empty red seat back seat empty near the court was bad optics. Bring the kids down from the rafters and let them enjoy themselves.

Guess the administration didn't "swing and miss".

Possibly touching 5 million eyes doesn't sound so "mom and pop" either Huh

Glad to help myself to some crow regarding the tip off. The atmosphere was so good that it ended up on Barstool which is about as major as it gets these days on social media. Obviously the admins didn't intend to have it publicized like that though...Bleacher Report and Barstool picked up on it. We also had our male dancer on 5th Year which is almost as popular as Barstool on Instagram. It's sad that they are clearly mocking his flamboyance but exposure is exposure nonetheless for branding. The guy can simply move...and steal your girlfriend!

Also, my post on Twitter of Figgy's dunk in slow motion has over 10,000 views which I was obviously not expecting. There's real buzz out there about us. Time to take advantage!

Bleacher and Barstool (especially) are rags but you are correct they do have large audiences. Is it the audience that the school is looking for? I don't know the answer to that question, but I would hope not. But like the say, any PR is good PR.

Barstool is way more popular than ESPN in the 18-30 demographic in terms of pop culture IMO. Many got tired of politics at ESPN and they just aren't hip anymore once they lost their great anchors for SC and went away from sports. ESPN actually was going to work with Barstool I believe, however they were too PC concerned about their content and cancelled. This is why Barstool is popular. I don't think you give them enough credit.

I trust only those under 30 to provide this geezer with accurate optics on these social media up and comers. Thanks Mike!

yup I fall in that demographic and I agree with you. Sports center used to be cool until it got political.

I give both of those websites all the credit in the world. They both capitalized on the young male demographic trends of the moment to launch highly successful businesses. Bleacher Report was launched in the middle of Idiot America and realized that they could get useless free content from high school wannabe sports journalists and the young males of the era would eat up the garbage content. Barstool saw the shift to Douchebag America over the past few years and realized by throwing in a healthy dose of misogynistic humor they too could build a media empire. Both have done very well and I'm not saying they do not wield any influence.

My criticism was of the readers, most of whom I imagine are a lot like you, who are stooping to this level of content.
