Realistic View of 2019 Recruiting

Always bears mentioning that we're on a fan board posting about kids getting an education and entertaining us 30 or so nights a year.
There are fans that do diligent research of twitter feeds and others with good contacts that can sometimes share their info. They make reading the threads worthwhile for us diehards. But as I far as I know none of the posters are making a living do this. The analysis and opinions are FUN to read, but let's not try to pretend this is serious stuff here unless you are betting the mortgage.
Agree. Most of what I enjoy is the humorous discourse, even when the writer thinks he is serious.
It seems that since April nothing very real or serious has been discussed.
We've been in a redmen.com Strawberry Field.

"Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to strawberry fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry fields forever

Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone
But it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me"
Or maybe reading the threads this summer is similar to watching the movie Ground Hog Day.
Now that’s funny and prescient, OLV72.
Thanks.

We are poised to have a very nice year this year....can't stand this negativity all the time over and over. Seriously?? Just look forward to this year and then bitch and complain IF we don't have a good season and IF we can't recruit to make most on here happy. To keep beating it over our heads serves absolutely no purpose except to negatively spin our team to the world. and of course the players read these sites so don't tell me it might not influence them at all. Great recruiting tool against us. I get we all have opinions. But be a little smarter sometimes in how you bash us.
No one thinks we'll be bad next season. The problem is we stand to lose our top four guys, and there are no replacements. I've think I've posted that I believe we win 26+ games next season. Most teams that win that many games build upon it the following season. We don't even have a Marco Baldi coming in after a great season.
I can't even worry about the 19 recruitment, hey maybe if we kick ass this year, get into the top 25 where recriuts will see a # before St. John's, get s to say the elite8, just maybe we get 1 or 2 of the few top recruits that are still available.
I guess I'm just hoping, but at this point I'm just focused on this year.
This year being Jan-March, we seen a great ooc last year before taking a crap in our conf games, and this year our ooc game are much softer. To me the only games that matter in ooc is the Gavit, pre-season tourny and Duke game.

I know that everyone is losing patience with the 2019 recruiting but we already have Eli Wright and David Caraher here already. From what I've heard and read they are good players. All we need is a point guard and another big and we will be fine.
As far the schedule is concerned, I'm disappointed also. But, I agree with Oldschool Redmen, it's the Duke game and the Gavit tournament. The fact that the rest of the OOC schedule is weak may allow the staff to work out rotations and get some of the new guys and younger guys playing time without having to worry about losing games because we should beat these teams regardless. We have a lot of new players this season and if we can use these OOC games to get our rotations down and get guys like Roberts and Williams some decent playing time to get everyone on the same page and ready for the Big East season then let's use it for that. I am just trying to find a silver lining here but this might work out for us because as Oldschool Redmen said, our season is from January to March. So, let's at least use the weak OOC schedule to our advantage and use to get some guys time and put everything in place so we can finish 2nd or 3rd in the conference. If Heron is eligible, Villanova to me is really the only team that is better than us.

Thanks. I know they don't call it Midnight Madness anymore, just couldn't recall what it is billed as. It's always interesting (if not necessarily significant) to see which recruits show up.

Red Storm Tip-off is what they market it as.. and agree we've not had success at attendance translating to signings. Last year, Jordan Brown was there.

I would sign for 2 guys on that list. But be clear on a couple of things:

1)That means SJU whiffed on just about all of the top 50 kids we have gone after the last few years. And that assumes SJU even lands 2 of those kids and

2)We really needed to make a coaching change in April of 2015 because the previous staff couldn't land kids between 100-150 in the rankings? Really? We needed to hire Chris Mullin because we could never get kids like Marcellus Earlington with previous staffs? Really?

This is my larger point. When you make a coaching change especially when there are no pending NCAA sanctions or investigations you do so based on performance. SJU said finishing 5th and going 10-8 and then 10-8 again last 2 years and whiffing on some key local recruits wasn't GOOD ENOUGH. And I am OK with this. But ask yourself this, especially if you are one to simply give Chris Mullin every benefit of the doubt. Let's speculate and say SJU decided to keep Lavin and extend him. 3 years later. Do you really think Lavin's record would be 38-60/12/42 over that period? Probably not, be honest it would be better. Do you really think he couldn't recruit the type of talent on the previous and current rosters? I think he could. And let me be clear I don't think Lavin is a great coach. And that is the crux of my point.

At some point Chris has to start doing things that make people say, "Yeah, that is why we made the change." "Yeah that is why we hired Chris and not say Danny Hurley." "That is why SJU did the right thing in not retaining the last staff."

That simple. And this year is HUGE...both on the court and off. I am rooting hard for SJU and the staff. But those who blindly defend this staff need to look closely. And need to ask themselves those questions before they blame everyone including Lavin for the current issues regarding the staff.
What issues? We were left with an empty cupboard we are climbing out of? That Mullin does it differently? That you don't like his methods? because he (and Matt obviously) have clearly upgraded our talent so now it is oh, they are transfers or oh, sob, sob, what about next year? Your and others issue with Mullin is you don't like him or the hire so you spin, spin, spin to suit your agenda. Lavin stopped recruiting, plain and simple, HE QUIT, so he was fired. You don't want to give Mullin time to prove or disprove himself fine but I find it incredibly ironic you will go as far as to disparage a player (Davis) you obviously never saw play and the fact that the coaches maybe decided to recruit him. Agenda, agenda, agenda.
I'm just wondering, when does that excuse stop?
If he fails this year is that the same excuse? Maybe after next year? Or after year 8???

I'm being real serious too, I'd just like to know when that excuse stops.

If Mullin fails here, I pray he leaves the next coach some ballers, or it will be the same crap excuse for the next coach as well. It gets old after a while.
I agree. Listen, the Big East is in a transitional season. Seton hall, Xavier, Creighton, even Nova have a lot of turnover going on. Despite the weak OOC, if St Johns can take advantage of being a team that actually has the core returning from the previous season, they could go 11-7 or 12-6 and they'll be in the tournament regardless of OOC SOS. I don't think this team should be on the bubble this season, I think they should take a major step forward and be in the tournament without the fans sweating on selection sunday. Seriously we could all do without the suspense, especially since CBS is probably gonna extend the show to 4 hours this year

Show me the strong leans that will restock the roster after Slick, Simon, Marvin, and Marcellus leave next year.

Now, all of the above may be true or false but rather than play word games with each other the only way to put speculation to rest is with a speculum. Any volunteers?;)
Put dinkins on the jack William's identity. He unmasked him once before and can do it again.
this is my first time on here in awhile, and I'm tired of reading this stuff on here. I don't get it. I PROVED who i was when Dinkins tried to "unmask" me. And ill do it again if i have to. I tried responding to a PM from Tom in Salem a couple months back and instead he starts telling me to "get a life" and that I'm a psycho. This was a community I loved being a part of when I was in high school and now I'm looked as a phony or a fake when I'm not. Im 20 years old going to be 21 in October. Im a junior at St. John's! I'm LITERALLY sitting in a class in Marillac as I type this. I know I don't post like I used to but in my high school we had our own iPads that we used instead of carrying around books. But they blocked like every non academic website on the iPads. But they didn't block redmen.com, so in high school, i would pretty much just read and post on here all day. Since then, life has gotten busier, and Im not always on as much, Ive also become somewhat a better student since so I don't post that much in class, even though I'm doing it now, but still, get off my back please
Someone is getting cranky in their old age! :p
I think we are in the same class in Marillac! Are you also taking "Basketball Scouting Course-
Advance Your Basketball Career with Executive Instruction" taught by professor Mitch Richmond?
Lol!

If roster turnover occurs, as it always does, Matt can play his transfer cards.

Iggy - Aidan does have family in area apparently, so it is not out of question he could be landed. I expect a Fall official visit & we’ll go from there.

No clue on Kofi, but we’ll see.

"We were left with an empty cupboard we are climbing out of?"
^ is getting old.

Logen and all the Mullin defenders, I got one simple question for you.

It feels plenty old right now.
Even though most of us are New Yorkers, color many of us as a noncredulous character from Missouri.
Show me that Jack Williams actually exists. For that matter, show Austour that Jesus Christ actually existed.
