Zagoria on Salnave

He broke down his three options:
St. John’s – “It would be great to be back home and play in NYC again. Important for my family and loved ones.”
LMU – “Coach [Stan] Johnson seems very promising and he’s made me feel very comfortable. One of the few head coaches that were direct and up front with me about plans.”
DePaul – “They’ve also made me feel really comfortable throughout the process and I think they also can be promising.”

LMU and DePaul - no contest. Be patient Ray on LJ's decision..

So if we don't get Salnave is everyone going to jump off cliffs? While SJU is > DePaul and LMU, there are likely some other factors at play (ie LJ uncertainty still, position glut, etc)

With Greg Williams, McGriff, Posh, Cole, and Wusu, I would pass on Salnave. In my opinion, he would probably be better off attending LMU.

It sounds like he wants to play for St. John’s but there is no clear role.

And Dunn Panther let’s not forget him. He will get key minutes next season.

But this will/could become a key factor for NY NJ CT players going forward AND could swing the balance in our favor ( do I hear Mark Jackson, Malik Sealy et al. )

I dont think he is a pg so he is not competing with posh or mcgriff. I dont see Wusu getting big time minutes as a freshamn. So I think he would be battling with willimas and cole for minutes.

And coach mike isnt playing favorites. If Salnave thinks hes better then cole and williams, then I hope he comes on board and battles it out with those guys for playing time.

The competition for minutes is going to be tremendous this year. i cant wait to see what kids step up and earn time. These practices are going to be highly competitive. Its a great thing for this program.

Here is the rub on that he is a 1 yr hire. And immediately eligible. If someone like say McGriff is not ready or may transfer then Salnave is someone who can provide 1 yr depth at this level. You are not asking him to be a high end starter nor are you asking him to be the future of anything. He is one year hire.

Unless Salnave really wants to play close to home, I would be surprised if he would be happy not getting starter level minutes.

I remember seeing him twice on TV when he was a senior, and came away unimpressed. So unless he's stepped up his game considerably, I wouldn't want to waste a 'ship on him.

If he thinks he is going to come to a BE school with Cole and Alexander coming in and expects to start then you are right he is wasting his time. He would probably be better at a LMU. But keep in mind he is leaving Monmouth where he would obviously start. So it is not just about being a starter.

But outside of that he can provide depth. The other point I would make is those that say he would be wasting a ship? Really? He is a 1 yr rental. If you have it available unless you have a better alternative why wouldn't he be a decent fit. If the choice is NOT use the scholly or bring in a 1 yr rental who can provide depth I don't see the issue..

If he really wants to come here, it's probably better for him personally if McGriff transfers, LJ goes pro, and maybe even Caraher transferring. That way he'd get minutes at multiple positions and be a big part of the rotation.

But not sure swapping all three guys for Salnave would make sense.

If LJ leaves, not sure how much better we could do with a replacement at this point, but doubt he'll still be around when LJ makes his decision. Otherwise, don't see we have much in the way of minutes for him.

Not suggesting he is remotely a replacement for LJ talentwise but he could add some depth and scoring in the rotation to lessen the pain of losing him.
