Providence, Thur. Dec. 28, 7p, YES, 570AM

I also thought that Tariq got too excited and did not play within himself. Saw offensive moves from him I had never seen before. Sense that Cooley did superb defensive planning for the game.

Hey Dink if we lose Ponds like LoVette season over.

I totally agree. It'll likely look similar to Mullin's first season and the Norm Roberts years.

Anybody catch the score and how much time left in game when Ponds was injured?

It was 75-57 when he left, but some people I know, who were watching on TV, said that he came down awkwardly on that steal/layup, that put us up 32-26. That may be where the injury was suffered, since he had been playing a great game to that point, and wasn't the same after that.

That is when It happened. I was watching on TV w/ some friends and I saw him limp back on defense and said "oh shit". He stayed in but from that point on his ball pressure was substantially less and he could not stay with Cartwright specifically.

Cooley ran a coaching clinic on mullin and staff last night.

That should be concerning going forward as well. Watching them in the 2nd half on the bench they all looked lost. They had no idea on how to stop the bleeding and they still had timeouts in their pockets.

I believe we will always have talent but we will always be one step behind as we do not have a proper coaching staff in place. 2 recruiters and 1 big time X and 0 talent.

Post game locker room last night Providence was boasting on how their assistant coach put together a great 2nd half game plan and worked to perfection.

Was playing well offensively. Did not put in any effort on D. Stretch when game got away, Cartwright hit two 3's where Ponds did not bother to even make a courtesy attempt. Tarik Turner who never criticizes anyone on ST John's said "Ponds might need to change his defensive strategy". Translation being he needs to play D. Then when Cartwright starting really killing him, his response was to jack up terrible shots.

He may have gotten hurt, but it didn't stop him from shooting and not why we got killed.

I am sorry I watched the game on TV. The injury after the steal and layup hurt his ability to play defense significantly. From that point on his ability to apply the same ball pressure dropped noticeably. Maybe Tarik was not aware of the injury, like many who attended the game, but from that point on his defensive play dropped.

Didn't stop him from shooting.
Doesn't close out well. Plays passing lanes and has long arms. Getting bunch of steals does not necessarily make you a good or even willing defender.
He did bad job in closing out. They all did was just more noticeable with him.

and hope never to see again. A 22 point loss at home is the equivalent of a 30 point loss on the road. Either way not a good look. Better correct things fast or we will be very lucky to duplicate last season's 7-11 BE record.

Agree.

Pomds’ defensive effort does come and go and I am concerned about his 3 point shooting and Melo-like tendencies. However, this guy is a stud and let’s remember that he had 14 at time he got hurt - without the benefit of his outside stroke. So, nobody was stopping him and up until that point he was best player on floor. Cartwright played an extraordinary game but scored 1st basket with under 2 left in first half. 16 of his 21 came in 2nd half after Ponds was hurt. Recognize his larger value was being distributor and 15 assists were fabulous. He had plenty of help with 3 guys 6’7”+ on the end of those passes hitting 3s.

He was absolutely the player of the game, but Ponds final stat line would have been very good, as well, had he not been hurt. And, had Lovett been playing he would have defended Carwright and neutralized his quickness advantage.

Cartwright is killing us this half. Ponds need to tighten up defensively.

Tighten up? You have to attempt to play defense before you can tighten up; Cooley knew Ponds just fakes it and went after him from the opening bell. Cartwright has chewed him alive. Double figure assists without even working hard by breaking him down at will.

Shamorie has never been a good on the ball defender, Newkirk lit him up in the St. Joe's game, Cooley was sitting courtside for most of the game and took notes.

Per Lunardi:

BIGGEST LOSER (28Dec): St. Johns's and Temple both fell below the cut line with inexplicable home losses. In Temple's case, the opponent (Tulane) was a head-scratcher; for St. John's, the margin of defeat against Providence was unexpected. None of that will matter if Shamorie Ponds' knee injury is serious.

Hats off to Cooley. He prepared his team, but thinking if Ponds hadn’t gotten injured—even with his problematic D, we would’ve won the game. Now, worried about Shamorie and Marcus. Hope we get good news.

If the injury to Ponds was on the breakaway layup with 4:14 to go in the first half, Providence scored 26 points in the first 16 minutes at that time. They then scored 14 points in the last 4 minutes of the first half and another 54 in the next 20 minutes. Now not all of that was the result of the Ponds injury but it certainly had a big impact. As stated Ponds had 14 points and 4 assists to that point. For all those that incessantly complain about Ponds shortcomings, good luck watching this team without him.

Funny thing is , for the first 10 minutes or so, I thought we were the vastly superior team.
Absolutely Beast. The lesson for our team is that we have razor thin margin for error and have to play hard and with focus for 40 minutes and we must value every possession.

Agree but seems this lesson is one they've had before, didn't learn from so more than likely we'll see it again.

I'm not giving up hope but drives me crazy how this team repeats its past ways.

Per Zach B

St Johns will host top 2019 targets Kofi Cockburn and Aidan Igiehon along with 2021 Jaquan Carlos today against Providence. #sjubb

According to Zach B both 2020 Posh Alexander and 2019 wing CJ Walker were there too.

I am not going to be to hard on coach and staff .The best coach in CB could not have won that game. By this point and all the practicing they should be better. YES, AN EXPERIENCED coach could have brought the score down a few baskets but the talent level throughout Providence TEAM WAS JUST BETTER . IT WAS LIKE MEN PLAYING BOYS . We have to give Mullin thru 2019. It looks like things will be better next yr. If we do not make the NCAA next yr than Mullin's job would have to be in danger
Stronger rebounding and defense next yr along with better talent and everyone returning gives us a bright future I say everyone since I can not see NBA SCOUTS INTERESTED
this yr with anyone on the team with all the talent thru out the country but THAT IS JUST mo
