Providence, Thur. Dec. 28, 7p, YES, 570AM

Its Time to hold the coaches accountable. The composition of the roster is their responsibility. The in-game management is on them. Use of timeouts, defensive changes, etc. The coaches are being paid pretty well. No more passes extended from me.

Was the game disappointing? Yes. Were there some very real areas of concern exposed? Yes.

But the accusatory tone and harshness of some posts surprises me.

Unquestionably this team is better and more talented than last year's. The overall talent level is far superior. The OOC performance against a harder OOC schedule was much better this year. Yes there are still roster deficiencies and we are not deep enough.

What the ultimate fate of this year's team is will be played out. Injuries could play a big part. But I'd be very surprised if we don't make at least the NIT. That would represent further slow and steady improvement. With next year's recruiting class strong, I expect more depth and progress in the future.

Till the Providence game I've enjoyed what I saw this far. And while I expect more ups and downs I expect I will enjoy the balance of the season. I'm very pleased where we are from where we were. Yes I would have loved for these guys to overachieve this year, and maybe they still will. But I'm satisfied.

Yes,what you say is true however, you are no doubt more patient then most of the posters.THE TEAM THAT IS ON THE COURT is our team and we have to support them but we can be critical where warranted

Sorry if you felt my tone was too harsh, but the inconsistency of the the play is maddening. Why haven't these players been schooled on rebounding and 3-point defense? Tired of seeing shoot and retreat on defense type of play. Hopefully the Providence game was an outlier. Season is still young, so I am apprehensively hopeful.

So, I guess you'll hold them responsible for next years' roster as well? They walked into a shiethole left by the pretty boy and it takes time to get things straight.

Did they get outcoached on Thursday, yeah, but as far as I'm concerned that had a lot to do with injuries. Cartwright went off on us in the second half, Ponds was hurt, Trimble was clueless and Simon couldn't control him either. When a guy is on like that, and I mean the assists as well as the scoring, and you're down manpower wise what do you think could have been done? Call timeouts? Go to a zone? Press? He called a timeout when they went up 11 but it was too late. Changing defenses wouldn't have mattered because Kyron was just too clever with the ball and either found the open man or hit long threes, plus they had four guys hitting threes. You can't press if you don't score and we weren't scoring.

Look we fell apart on both ends about 5 minutes into the 2nd half they blitzed us and we couldn't recover. I'm pretty sure we're going to start 0-3 in conference but if we get Ponds healthy and Marcus back sooner rather than later we can still go 9-9.

I'm not sure I understand your point. Don't hold the coaches accountable? We were a 7 point favorite going into that game, without Lovett. Did you see defensive adjustments? If the players or coaches aren't performing as required, shouldn't they be held accountable?

I agree on accountability but it was one game and the overall arc is good.

I was not patient with Norm
Or Lavin when I saw regression not progression. In the past 3 years I have seen nothing but steady progression. Yes I'd love to be a tourney team this year like everyone else. Bit I'm optimistic and hopeful it is soon.

Redmanwest, I am just frustrated to see all the good work and effort blown up vs. a Providence team I felt we should have beaten.

A lot of posters are acting like this was supposed to be a top 20 team, and can't understand how they got their clocks cleaned by the middle of the pack Friars. The team has struggled from 3 all season, lacks depth and therefore is really prone to injuries, and is still relatively young. This team is a work in progress. I will be content with a NIT invite, and enjoy what this team can give at this stage of the rebuild. Which will be good games, bad games, and some in the middle. When you are Villanova, you don't need to bring your A game every night, and can deal with an injury here and there. We are not there yet. Meanwhile, if Cartwright needed another day to recover from his ankle injury, our guys probably win easily.

The truth is, we played Providence even the first half.

. Ponds was injured and Lovett was absent. Not an excuse, but something to take into consideration. That said. We are too thin and if Lovett and Ponds are out for an extended time we are in trouble. The other problem is, asking Ponds to play 40 minutes a game is not sustainable.

After reading your post I broke into a chorus of EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES!

Our coaches are not strong in a lot of areas. One of the main reasons an assistant coach with experience needs to be hired if we want to be successful in future.

A lot of people on this board do not want to realize this because they still live in the 80's where Chris Mullin is god.

Lovett and Ponds are the only Big East quality players we have. The rest are back ups.

We've got 5 guys in the Big East statistical leaders. When Lovett returns I'm confident we can make that 6. Of these 6 I suspect from the small sample so far this season that Lovett is the most polished/complete player. I say that knowing that Ponds and Simon have more upside but Lovett seemed to have ramped up his defense and was looking good on the ball. Even considering his shooting % which I think will improve, Ponds still needs to be a consistent defender and Simon does not have a fluid or consistent shooting stroke but still plays an overall great game. I'd take Simon on my team over just about anyone in the Big East.

Not to say he's an All-Big East player at this point but I'm pretty sure that Clark could start on pretty much every other Big East team. He and Owens would not be featured in traditionally structured teams as they are both playing like stretch 4 and both emphasis on the stretch more than the 4 but Clark has looked really good when he mixes up his inside/out rather than parking on the 3 pt line. He's looked good there too though. Yeah I wish he banged a little more but I would not dismiss him.
