Is Astor Place haircutters still there? I worked on Broadway somewhere between 10th and 8th in my first full time office job in the mid 80's, before that around the corner at the Bottom Line while finishing off school.
My son said it is.

I went to Astor Place Haircutters in the Mid 80’s. I went to a guy named Oscar who cut my hair. I worked for an independent record company down there back in the day.

you guys are killing it with these stories about the Astor Place area. Great place to spend time, I loved St. Marks Sounds then Tower, and was a regular at the Bottom Line when it was still in existence. The owners always said they were searching for a suitable place to re-open and never did. Right near CU was the headquarters of the Village Voice. One of my high school classmates at Nazareth was a featured writer at the VV. Down on Second Ave just off St. Marks was the original Belgian Frites, the best French fries (actually Belgian frites (double cooked)) around.

Never got a cut from the Astor Place haircutters however

Didn't SJU's foray into Manhattan begin with buying the College of Insurance in Tribeca? SJU probably made a kicking when they sold that property.

I thought they moved to like 14th Street near the old Academy of Music (maybe not?) Now, in Cooper Union's area, is a move up IMO. Now if only SJU was in CU's rarefied academic area, it would go from a 85% Acceptance rate to a much lower Acceptance rate (10%?)

They sold the Tribeca location and they built condos in that spot. Not sure about 14th street.

Bleeker Bobs, a blast from the past (for me at least, I went there long time ago). I think he passed away only recently. I know friends went there and sometimes there would be a sign on the door saying he was away for a few minutes, or hours.
True. To bridge and tunnel club wannabe hipsters like my teen friends and I, Bleecker Bob's was Shangri-la. You'll like this St. Marks reference. Best bars ever not named Sly Fox, Gantry's or Jpods: Grassroots and Holiday Cocktail lounge. Finish it off with 2 and 2 at Mcsorleys and you had yourself a night.

My brother HATED that guy. Used to fight with him over his hatred of either goth or industrial. (Brother loved both so I can't remember which one Bob hated. Probably both.)

Yeah, Allan and Stanley were forced out by NYU after 30 years. Stanley died a while ago. Not sure about Allan. The booker from back then is married to the drummer of The Smithereens. They were dating when I worked there. I had a couple of HS buddies/NYU students working there and they got me a job the day I moved into Manhattan. Left about 9 months later once my eventual career had some legs.
