Providence (MSG), Wed., Jan. 10, 6:30p, FS-1

During the late 80's & 90's into the 00's as a way to market my newly formed firm and a a way to network, I once had 10, then 8, then 6, then 4 season ticket packages just for the MSG games. A lot of the group I was aiming at was from NJ so the campus games were out.

10 TICKETS! Ouch, it cost a lot of money (back then) and we would do dinner out beforehand, so even more $$$. Did it help business?, not so much but when we were good, I had so many guys rooting for the Johnnies I didn't really care. We had a blast. When the Garden was pulsing and the Johnnies were winning it was a great time.

When we sucked and I was down to 6 then 4 tickets and I could beg and couldn't get people to come. I surrendered the package in 2010 at the end of the Norm era. I should have gotten rid of them at the beginning of the Norm era. Funny thing is I began by buying my season tickets in the late 80's direct from the Garden and was treated very nicely by them. Eventually, I decided to switch to buying the package through the school and even joined the Red White Club but wasn't treated as well as the Garden treated me. 10 Season tickets (even the half package) brings in a lot of money.

The Highs were high, but the LOWS WERE VERY LOW. Sometimes I felt like it was just a crowd of me and Norm's friends and family. It was as quiet as a morgue.

Moral of the story: When we get to sustained excellence, we will get the casual college BB fan.

NYC is hungry for really good college BB but they haven't had that for a long time.

I'm banking on the same size crowd as the Michigan game, at that game we had a good crowd, but the team wasn't, this time it will be different.

114 will lead us on to victory. MJMJr will pull his shirt off, circle it over his head and whoop up the crowd off like in the 80's when we had Fanboy ( up in the stands) and Flag Boy (circling the Court) to get the crowd into it!!! {Those were days, my friend, I thought they'd never end}.
Question for the Old Timers:

When Flag Boy circled the Court at MSG and the crowd counted the number of laps he made, what was the highest count?

If I remember 19 am I off by a lot?

The fanbase isn't pathetic...the basketball team is pathetic. You're simply not going to draw in a pro town when you've been the worst BE team not named Depaul for decades. Yes, we had a big hire. So what? So far we've done nothing - the last hire did nothing and the two previous hires got fired as soon as they danced. Not surprising how few people show up - surprising how many do. The attendance bump caused by the Mullin hire was an anomaly.
So far we’ve done nothing?
We’ve done more than the past 20 teams.
Great driven coach. Some v good players, good overall team getting better.
Future is bright.
Recognize it.
Appreciate it.
All the best 😉

Yeah that's right...nothing. Doing more than the past 20 teams would mean winning an Ncaa tournament game. They don't payout after 2 furlongs are run. We had a choppy out of conference followed by a good conference start. But there are 16 and a BE tournament to go. As a wise philosopher, my friend's father, once said: " don't tell me what you're gonna do...show me what you've done".

This team feels like it's finding itself. The offense is there while the defense has been improving. Last game was a revelation with our ability to defend without fouling. We need to do the same. tho we do have problems with quick guards, need backside help on blow bys. While I've been down on Ledlum, he is way more under control. we will def get top 25 votes, need to win games we are supposed to. starting against PC

. I’m 34 & when I bring up SJ all I hear is “Oh yeah the 80’s! Mullin!”.

There is an old adage that “old me talk about the past; young men talk about the future”.

Given the fact that this site is populated by grey haired or no haired men over 55, and that there have been few basketball superstars through the StJ’s program during last decades it is no surprise that many posters post about former StJ’s players who played before the current players were even born, or in some case before the current players parents were born.

I want to thank you Otis for acknowledging that this bald 53 year old is still young. 😉😃

I'm, once again, excited for this game. This will definitely not be an easy game but I think that we will prevail.

I think that this team has turned a corner and we will be a force to be reckoned with. No-one is going to want to play us now that our guys have figured out that sharing the rock and good defense is the key to winning. No more Hero ball, thank goodness. No more defensive lapses.

I really believe that we are tournament bound and once there, nobody will want to face us in the tournament as well.

I agree. We just gotta settle down and let this team continue to turn heads. The social media era we live in is crazy, all it takes is one moment, one highlight, one win that catches on online, and suddenly we’re a hot ticket.

With pitino this thing could pop off at any moment. Honestly I’m not worried about the attendance aspect of it, I know how badly we all want to continue to see this program rise.

But my mentality right now is keep winning and keep inching closer to solidifying ourselves as a tournament team. We have Pitino now… if we get into the bracket who knows what could happen

We’re gonna have the better coach and better big man in any March Madness game we find ourselves in. Sign me up!
Your last line raises visions of ESPN anti-Fox pressure to make sure that we face Purdue with Mr. Edney early on and get embarrassed. There are games behind the games.

I swear he broke 20 one time as the refs were handing the player the ball to inbound to start the 2nd half. Always had to be back in my seat for his run! we had such great energy those years.

At his point I think we need Sir Eric The Page Caller to give us a number for the Providence game. Early game but a home game so less people posting during game. So many different variables

Eric got lucky that this got sidetracked by attendance #s and concerns about the fan base. Two hot button issues that guarantee a 10% bump on the page count.

Pitino is committed to playing eight games every year at the Garden. Vill and Conn can draw fifteen thousand fans but the other big east teams most years will not result in near sellouts even if SJU becomes a top twenty team . Selling tickets to college basketball games can be quite a challenge.
Why not turn the clock back and use the local mid major teams to help fill the seats. Schedule an Iona , Man., Fordham , Hofstra etc. game where the mid major doesn’t share in the gate and they have to buy 2,500 tickets. Adding five thousand to what a SJU vs Prov. Xav, etc, should guarantee a fifteen thousand crowd.
For over fifty years college basketball only scheduled doubleheaders at MSG. Even the SJU vs Geo game in 1985, probably the toughest ticket ever was a doubleheader. Would the mid majors agree to the financial terms? I don’t know but they are dying trying to sell tickets. I‘m sure Pitino can take over the SJU marketing department and come up with a better plan than just depending on SJU winning to fill the Garden.

Providence is the smallest College in the BE and while they get a handful of kids from the NY area as students , they don’t have the Alumni base that we do or , the high flyers like UCONN , NOVA , ND when they were in the BE . G”town has been bad for several years and their Alums don’t come out like they use to .

It wasn’t mentioned but , a lot of St John’s hard core fans have , either moved away as I have or , because of Age can’t get to games at MSG very easily .

CA attendance usually tips out around 5800-5900 doesn’t it ? That’s the devoted Fan Group and is a far distance short of 10-15,000 wanted for a MSG game .

And , the harshest of reality is that the Penn Station area is heavily occupied by homeless , etc . It doesn’t make for the most enticing Area to bring family or young kids . At night time especially .

Just my opinion .
But they just reopened Roses Pizza in Penn Station. That's a +

If our OOC season unfolded with beating Michigan, beating Dayton but losing to Houston, beating Boston College, and the BE the way it was, I think we'd see a lot more hype this year.

I'm not saying this is how it should be. But the brand of St. John's basketball is of a program that consistently underachieves and disappoints, and unfortunately, played right into that narrative in November (which if you're a diehard fan like us, was absolutely understandable).

Well if all that happened they'd probably be a top 20 team right now and the rating would move the meter as much as the accomplishments.
