The MSG plan I bought has already been worth every penny, and still got some games to go to. Some of my thoughts on the game:
On the atmosphere:
-- MSG was packed. I will say, Providence had a ton of fans in 200s and behind their basket in the 100s. I'd say it was likely 70-30 STJ. My in-laws went to the game, two of them are PC alum as well. Going to the game (maybe not the same seats) and hanging out afterwards will be a fun tradition I'm excited to share with my future son (will be Class of 2046

)
-- I honestly think the afternoon MSG tip against our old school BE rivals is one of the best sports traditions in
America, let alone college basketball. It's just a fun, super energetic atmosphere that's nothing other. I completely completely disagree with anyone who thinks Carnesseca helps us more (even with a 70ish-30 split) -- there's a certain energy that guys on the court feed off of. It's the epitome of what makes Big East basketball, and STJ, great.
-- One thing I find very funny is that our fans are rusty with the chants and atmosphere. It's a lot more lively and loud compared to other years, but there's no cohesion about all chanting in unison. I'm not really trying to be funny when I say there needs to be "DE-FENSE" stuff on the jumbotron.
-- Rich Aurilla and Carl Banks was also there.
Game:
-- We lose this game last year, and other years. Tons of negative to take away, but the thing that matters is that they find a way to win at the end.
-- As Marillac and other stated, I actually think our offense in the last six minutes was pretty good! It was nice to see some good looks getting created. Kadary/Luis/Zuby is a lethal combo at the end of games. Pairing those two with the best offensive rebounder in the country is just insane.
-- Our defense and energy once we got up 19 was totally not characteristic of this team and very disappointing. They had plenty of good looks.
-- Abdur-Rahim thing was ridiculous for us to not be in his shirt. They switched Smith on him the whole second half and we couldn't figure out how to get him a tougher look. I think Sim's idiotic shooting foul, which led to a four point play earlier in the half, made our guys more hesitant. Abdur-Rahim's last three games, he's gone 7/11 from three. I'm sure the staff called him out as a threat.
-- Zuby was PISSED at RJ after that last three by Providence. Yelling in his face and almost had to get restrained. Good to see Zuby calling guys out. He's a warrior and leader on the team. It seems like every game players are talking to RJ to make sure his focus is there.
-- Sim's another guy where you can count on him to do the following every Big East game: miss a bunch of open looks, make a really really really stupid & costly foul, and jaw with the refs. The first thing, you kind of have to just live with but I am nervous its very much in his head. He was way too happy to hit that three point shot he did hit -- it looked like a 1000lb gorilla came off his shoulders. ...he then missed the next shot.
The ref thing was also not good. I forget the play that incited it, but it was so bad that I can see from my seats that the ref was saying he was done listening and became beat red. Sim didn't stop. Two guys had to restrain Sim, and two other guys were patting the ref's shoulders to calm him down! I told my wife that that ref will call a tech the next time someone complains. I was thinking that this team was complaining a lot all game, and they got themselves in their heads.
-- While I don't think Deivon had a great game, I do think he did a bunch of small stuff to connect the team. Ultimately, I think Kadary should have the ball in his hands in offensive sets.
-- Unacceptable game by Scott. He got himself out of this game by really stupid fouls. He's too important to just play 16 minutes because of getting four fouls. Reminded me of the games against Harvard and Quinnipiac.
-- I noticed a different trainer at our bench for today's game. Not sure why or the story.
-- I give English credit for getting his guys to play this hard and physical against us. But don't be fooled by the brand/prestige that Providence has. They aren't good. They're a top five Atlantic Ten team (I say that due to metrics and eye test) and this was a Q3 game. Happy we won, but unacceptable effort by our guys.
Sorry this is so long but I need a place to vent after games. lol
