Providence (MSG), Sat., Feb. 1, 12 NOON, CBSSN

So quick to give up on young players. He has shown some offensive prowess and he can move well for a 7’ tall.
I would like to see him evolve under Pitno’s tutelage.
It’s the end of his junior year and he looks like a freshman in their first month.

He needs to go to a low A-10 school or the CAA and dominate with his size alone. He needs 30 minutes a night with a coach that will let him stay in the lane and play like he’s 7’1. I feel for him because this is not the situation for him to achieve his best.

Why would we carry 4 center last next year? Replace him with a stretch 4 that can play some 5 in a pinch.

2 funny st johns things:

1- Luis has taken over the wusu role of "im shooting 1 airball from 3 point range a game".

2- St Johns continued their favorite past time of creating a random superstar each night. Tonight it was abdur rahim.

I’d say off the top of my head that 5 of his made threes were not good shots and probably 3 of them were bad shots. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap.

And now he’s giving us heart trouble.

It’s not his heart that’s at issue, it’s his complete lack of coordination and non-existent basketball IQ.

BTW, he didn’t miss a year with heart trouble, he played 14 games. He played 31 games last year and he’s up to 21 games this year. He will not be back next year.
Well said.

Incredible that the mid-morning Huntington train to Penn was packed with fans going to MSG. At both of my regular stations (I'm in the middle of two) there were way more than 100 fans, about 90% ours.

Prov is one of the top choices for NYC metro Catholic kids. This would have been a 60-40 game at best without the surge in johnnies interest. Crowd was about 19,100 - insane for SJU vs a mediocre at best Prov team. The thing is, I don't think interest has crested yet. If we beat Marquette home and UCONN away, the city will explode in interest.

Not going to re-ignite the CA vs MSG debate. Of course a near capacity of a 75-25 split beats 5k at CA. This is exactly why Pitino demanded more games at MSG, even if that call doesn't seem as premature as it was.

I wouldn't trade my SJU Garden tix this season for just about any remaining game for Knicks tix.

I wasn't even exuberant when the game ended. For the first time in a long time in that situation, I expected that we'd score and find a way to win. Ok, I did hold my breath on the last gasp halfcourt fling.

Holy crap - just 4 home games remaining in season!!!! This has been some ride!!!!

Florida March travel on hold for NCAA run!! The last time a serious March run was contemplated (except for Lav year 1) I was too busy with work and kids to even think about travelling.

For all of us hoping to live long enough to see this happen again, can only say "Thank God for Rick Pitino!"

Think it's more than just home court advantage with Rick who you know enjoys the big time which MSG provides while CA little bandbox is basically an embarrassment to play in for a big time coach.

Loved the in-game adjustment made by staff. A few trips down in the 1st half Smith got abused down low by Providence center on a switch. Late 1st and in 2nd half instead of Smith guarding down low, the wing (Richmond/Scott) would pick up the center and Smith would sprint to corner to guard perimeter guy.

Weird season. During games watching us play makes me feel anxious. No matter how good our record is, I don’t think I have ever seen a team win this many games look as bad as we do on offense. Defensively we are as good as I have seen, but on offense we sometimes resemble the Norm teams. Then the game is over and you are like holy crap we are 19-3 10-1.

On defense, we remind me of those Houston teams of the last couple years. The problem with relying on D is it takes 5 guys totally committed to playing hard and paying attention for 40 minutes. The 5-10 mins that doesn’t happen is eventually going to hurt us against good offensive teams that can shoot.

Here is the thing, it has been 22 games. We are not going to shoot the ball better. Luis, Wilcher, Scott, Kadary are who they are. This is how they are going to shoot the ball. The % is not going to improve drastically. Smith is hurt so if he can get healthy he should improve but otherwise we are who we are.

I do feel to potentially get a little better offensively, you have to see what Glover or Lefty can do for you from the outside. Now that probably not gonna happen in next two games, but should before the BET.

I also feel there has to be a more concentrated effort to get Zuby looks down low. And finally for good or bad when we are in one of our ruts, you need to live or die with Luis and Kadary at end of games. Too often we will need a basket and guys other than those two or Zuby are shooting the ball.

If you took this team’s resume and stats and put it through the computer it would say we lose 90 percent of our games. Our stats are as ugly as a last resort grenade you bring home from the local bar at 4 am but somehow we find a way to win and defy mathematical probabilities.

Maybe for the offense stats, but not when factoring in defense. KenPom has us at #16 and that's all about stats (not just W/L). We've been favored in almost every game we've won, the computers think very highly of this team.

That said I do think we have gotten a bit lucky during the past month, while earlier in the year we were unlucky with close losses. I think we're right around where we should be, maybe a few spots higher, but regardless this week will tell us a huge amount about this team.

This explains why Providence made their run.
Zach, put your phone in your pocket 😎

Haven't read much of this thread, so not sure if it was mentioned, but ESPN said we had 99.7% odds of winning with 7 minutes left! Knowing the Johnnies I still felt a bit nervous at that point, but fortunately this team can make the final shot. Hopefully Pitino's words yesterday can prevent another collapse though lol.
