Providence Game

This is a big one. Beating An ncaa bubble team will give us a quality win especially with providence on a hot streak at home. If this team really wants to be in the thick of things then they need to get a W here.

Exactly. Time to take advantage of an opportunity for a change. Beat a respectable team on the road and upset a ranked team on Sunday. Do that & we are entitled to be hopeful. Less than that, please refrain from BS about "winning BE Tourney on our home court". Now or never week!

I'm in your camp paultz! Also pretty amazing that there is no love for providence with a pretty gaudy record and a weak ncaa bubble this year. A player like cotton can take a team pretty far on his back.

Completely agreed. This is a real opportunity for this team - a chance to get to 14-9 with 8 to play. They've set themselves up with their play the last 2 weeks, and can establish legitimacy with a win tonight. Then you have four days to get ready for a showdown with Creighton on a court where we are, for whatever reason, a different team.

Which is my primary concern tonight - our road inconsistency. Much better against Butler and Creighton, hopefully we can keep it going in that direction. This is a fork in the road game.

I do not like the comparisons to 10/11 because they were different teams with different expectations and had seasons which took different arcs, but this one kind of feels like that @Cincy game when we were, coincidentally, a similar 14-9. I remember that feeling like a game they had to have, a winnable game on the road against a direct competitor and similarly situated team. That win set them up to go after @Marquette and home Pitt in their next 2, and that's really where that season was completely changed.

Man you guys are a lot more confident than I expected. It should be noted that when we lost to Marquette (double digit score not really indicative of how close it actually was) we almost won the game after scoring 14 points in the first half. Marquette may not be as good as you think, especially on the road and on a quick turnaround. The Friars have also never won at Marquette so there may be some mental block with the Bradley Center.

This Providence team isn't going to blow people out. This game will be a grinding low 60's type contest. You can mark Cotton down for 20+ and Henton for 15+ but after that it's kind of a mystery. Harris and Batts played well against you guys in Queens but they have both been up and down.

I don't think most are that confident. Just not lacking confidence either, viewing this as a game we can win and a game we need to win. The fact that Providence is giving 4 points is indicitive by itself of how difficult it will be for SJU to win this game.

agree with eddy. we need to work under the basket high % shots and have them pick up fouls. If we start out the game firing jump shots i will lose my mind! Bang the boards baby, we can do this. Go Johnnies !!!

Not overly confident. Just going by the theory SJU is the much more desperate team. They put themselves in a corner, and tonight is a must. Getting swept by Providence puts all of SJU's at large dreams to pasture.

Your team can afford a slip up (but from your perspective I understand you look at SJU and see what should be a win).

I see a 4 point spread in a game where they beat us at home as indication that this is a very close game.

Your Fellow Friars are also very confident. I guess thats why we play the games. I def Respect Cooley and PC. You lost alot of talent but he managed to keep it together. But its time we go on a revenge tour. Down PC and then Dougie fresh on sunday.

Thanks for the Providence Journal piece Paultzman.

My favorite lines from DLo: "...Everything is moving in the right direction. Everybody just bought in...."

For a while there Obekpa, Rysheed, Pointer, seemed frustrated and disenchanted.

Everybody looks to be on board now regardless of when and how much they play.

Too bad it's come belatedly - but now that we're playing like team - who knows how far it can take us?

Completely agreed. Was just responding to the notion that SJU is overconfident going in. This game is a toss up.

It seems that whenever we need to beat Providence, we dont!! As of late they own us!! I hope things change tonite!!

The biggest mistake we made in the last game is after we fouled Batts out, Tyler Harris had 4 but we didn't go at him. If we had fouled him out, we would likely have won the game.

Of late? Well yeah they beat us this year. We win last year but Harrison suspension blah blah blah. (wont go there because I know how people react).
Year before that we smoke them at home and Cooley went home crying.
Year before that was Lav's first year and we won up there on New Years Day.

Recent history:
[ul]
[li]We lost at home on Jan 16th in double OT 84-83 when “the touch, the feel of Cotton” had 21 Pts, 9 Reb, 8 Ast, 2 Stl[/li]
[li]Last year we lost 62-59 up there. Cotton with lit us up with five 3’s. Finished with 24 Pts, 6 Reb, 2 Ast[/li]
[li]Our last win over the Friars was at home in 2011 when Moe went crazy: 32 points, 13 Reb, 4 Ast, 4 Stl, 2 Blk. Final 91-67 (first BE game that year). Cotton with 7pts, 6 assists. They went 4-14 in BE that yr.[/li]
[/ul]
A win tonight would be a statement but I am not at all confident.
