Providence Game Thread

Won 500 dollars on PC to protect against utter disappointment. Felt if we won this we'd be dancing but we haven't performed under pressure at all this season. Look at the Xavier game two weeks ago. We've lacked an identity all year long and it showed against any opponent worth their salt.

Put it towards the buyout

Wish I could. I never once came out and supported Lavin. Nice guy, solid recruiter but lacks the ability to coach players.. Our development or lack of development has been excruciatingly obvious. Guys don't know their roles, they almost never play off each other unless its in transition.

The smart thing to do would be send Lavin on his way. I have no hard feeling towards the guy but we could've done some big things this year. Instead it's 4 years-1 tourney appearance, 0 NCAA tourney wins.. Oh and that 1 appearance came with Norman's guys under the tutelage of Dunlap.

"I think St. John's is clearly an NCAA Tournament team when you look at the depth of our league." - Ed Cooley post game.

Thanks for that.

How long will we be young?

@DalyDoseOfHoops: Steve Lavin: "We have to hope they look at the body of work of a young team that continues to get better."#sjubb

Enough already! Harrison, Greene, Dom having been playing huge minutes since the day they stepped on campus three years ago. And Obekpa and Sampson have been starters for two full seasons now.

How is he the only person associated with this program that isn't incredibly frustrated right now?

More;

@DalyDoseOfHoops: Steve Lavin: "First year, D.J. got hurt. Second year, I had cancer. Third year, we didn't have D'Angelo." #sjubb

@DalyDoseOfHoops: That last quote is a response to Lavin being asked whether or not his teams have had a sense of urgency in March.

D'Angelo Harrison visibly upset as he enters the media room. Kid did as much as he could in the final minutes. #sjubb

Easy --he is the only person associated with this program making $2/million a year and desperately trying to get re-upped for another $10 million.

I am a huge lavin fan and wish him and the team nothing but success, but Cooley and their coaches had their team ready to play and played better than us, period. It is what it is. Coach is as good as their players, I get it, but if the coach doesn't have the players to win then the coach is not a good coach. Winning and losing starts at the top.

Anybody see Sir Dom the last part of this season? Wow.. Lost soul.. Give Jordon lot's of kudos for the effort. Rest of the team not so much..

NIT bound. It is what it is. No recruits next year as of now - kinda disappointing season.. Lavin outcoached today.

I will beat MJD to this; easy to say but how was he outcoached? We played hard 5 minutes out of 40. Now the copout is they are his players, etc......but this game was on the players. You LIVE to play in games like this and to play indifferently for most of the game is just something I can't understand.

As the commercial says, it's not complicated. It's because they won.

Oh, I get it; every lost game is because the losing coach was outcoached!! The players really have nothing to do with it; kind of like two guys matching the Jedi use of the Force with the players as their pawns. Puts sports in a whole new perspective

@NYPost_Brazille: Asked if this year would be disappointment if no NCAA berth, Lavin said he wouldn't feel that way, still feels it will be success. #sjubb

Getting killed on the boards and giving up double digit points on offensive rebounds to every team every game is on the coaching staff. We rebound we move on. No excuses given the size and quickness on this team.

You're right. This team never wanted it badly enough. Rebounding is an effort stat.

Really? Just because a team wins, that winning coach has out coached the losing coach? Interesting. I'd never heard that before.

I did not pin this loss on Lavin, nor do I give him a pass as you and some others are doing. IMO if you cannot get your players motivated for a game like this(and remember Lavin is supposed to be a master salesman), then you have to shoulder at least some of the blame for the loss. But don't just look at today's game, look at the whole season . Are you telling me that you don't hold Lavin as accountable for not making the tournament this year?

Yes I do; I am just busting your chops. Lavin is a fair at best game coach. But, and I know a lot of people disagree, I coached for a good number of years and I do not think you can really "coach": effort and I think that is the major problem with this team. You can take away playing time but who do you bench on this team? IMO, NO ONE on this team plays bust it out 100% hard consistently except GG. So who do you bench? People, including me, have asked why we don't press consistently but we don't play hard enough to committ to pressing all game. One team I really admire is Cincinnatti and I met their coach at a HS tournament last year (sorry I have a brain fart and can't remember his name) but I asked him how he gets his team to play so hard and he answered instantly "I recruit hard because you can't coach it." If we played as hard as Cincy does on every possession rather than when we are down 17 (today) or 18 (Creighton) we would be legitimate national contenders. But regardless, at the end of the day I don't think we have players or coaches who HATE losing and therefore we aren't willing to pay the price mentally and physically it takes to win at this level; we certainly have the talent.

Tell us about the game before people jumped for shots? What was that like? Give it a rest.

It's Lavin's Los Angeles "wins and losses aren't important...it's the learning curve" mentality that will sink this team every year. His locker room speeches must replicate Bill Murray's "It just doesn't matter", chant to the camp losers in "Meatballs". For most of our games, the team practically ran out of the locker room chanting over and over again, "It really doesn't matter".

It's not the Xs and O's. It's the mentality that these games really don't matter.

I only caught the 2nd half on tape. It was a awful performance of a team that lacks heart and has so many fundamental basketball deficiencies. CO because of his lack of BB Instincts is actually a negative contributor far in excess of what he contributes.

This team has so many flaws that unless they play with intensity cannot win a big game, as they have not done this season..

Anyone who thinks this group of players will deliver any better next year is mistaken. They don't have the necessary tools, Poor shooting, awful rebounding, low IQ..

Lavin doesn't seem able to coach against a Zone nor defend the 3. Those are fundamental flaws that are his responsibility. Even, in games this group won, they play ugly basketball, devoid of team coordination..
With so much on the line and a easy path, with NOVA OUT, they again came up very small

So I guess I'm glad I missed the game. The worst was leaving my iPad at halftime, coming back an hour later, checking the score, and finding us down 17, but it might've been a worse feeling when they cut it to one and gave me an ounce of hope before throwing it all away...

Sad, really, sad.
