Progress ?

I am sorry, but I can't wait for these kids to graduate and move on! They talk a big game and usually come up short. Today they came up real short! It appears to me that Lavin does not prepare them mentally for the big games. Why else would you come out uninspired for a game like this! Just disgusted!

Look I don't think there is any question that our guys wanted to blow Providence's door off. I don't doubt for a second that each guy couldn't focus on anything else all week but doing well today. But they came out so tight, and unlike most of the season, didn't let the game come to them. They were shell shocked by their poor start, and looked desperate the rest of the game.

In all sports there are gamers - athletes who are laser focused in big moments, and deliver again and again and again. Reggie Jackson in the WS, Joe Montana in the Super Bowl, Michael Jordan in the playoffs. Supremely confident in their ability to be heads and tails superior to their opponents.

Our guys just lose that at times, and showed no sign of that today, but I wouldn't call it lack of trying.

I'm happy this happen because this team has always played it's best when everyone thinks they are done. They have always been that way. I believe in them

So Based on the fact that we lost the last two games by a combined 60 points we have them just where we want them then I guess

It sounds weird. But when we were 2-6 everyone was giving up on the team. They just play better when their backs are against the wall, Dom even said that recently.

So basically (psychologists and psychiatrists help me out here) this team is characterized by a pathology akin to masochism. Explains a lot. Next UA uni should be black leather.

Seriously, that is not a defining quality of maturity nor for a team of seniors. Prima donas need motivation like that.

They don't deserve a bid to the big dance. They will only choke in any event

I don't get it. People here complain about the lack of fan support. Yet here we are, on a rabid fan board, and many posters are throwing in the towel, and calling the team an embarrassment. I think the people here are the embarrassment. I don't think the team phoned it in. They lack depth and size, and look like a bunch of guys that are out of gas from all the effort and drama surrounding the team. I hope they make the dance and play well. Did anyone think this team was winning any tourney, let alone the big one? This team needed a few big , strong bodies. We had 2 that didn't qualify. Everything we did after was pure gravy by a very hungry, overachieving team.

The frustration is not that we lost today. It is that we were blown out, on our home court, with a senior-laden roster, against a team we beat twice this year. Watching Creighton keep it close with G'town just makes it worse.

THANK YOU

the only thing more pathetic then the way we played today was this boards reaction. Throwing in the towel on these seniors four days before they finally make their first NCAA tournament. So laughable. Terrible performance today but people saying they don't deserve a bid are crazy. Don't throw away the last month and a half of great basketball just because of two bad games against good teams.

honestly there wasn't 1 excuse in your post to explain a loss today. Our last game was saturday. No way we are out of gas today. If we won today and lost to Nova tomorrow your post would make sense but today there is no excuse

The thing I am most pissed about, is today robbed me of my will to watch any other basketball game the rest of the day and this is my favorite time of year for sports

I am finally over the game. I am watching Xavier and Butller. Nice matchup between two well coached teams.

Better man than me I happily watched a marathon of Scooby Doo episodes with my 5 year old. BTW new version is terrible!

Today's performance was inexcusable. Losing is one thing. Getting blown out in what could have been a statement win by a senior laden team is a whole other. Very very disappointed in these kids. Expected so much more. Lavin coached the kind of game that I've come to expect. That is he is when things got tough, he was clueless as to how to prevent the wheels from completely falling off. Not starting Jordan yet another head scratching move. There are no silver linings to take from this performance. Being able to rest for a week or so before the next game means nothing. If we get blown out next week people will use the excuse that we were rusty because we had a week off. Just hoping the kids can put this behind them and win a game or two in the big dance, but not holding my breath. Apathy setting in.

..

That may be true , Mike. But, if you read VACARRO'S column, it might start all over again.

Silver lining was Jordan's play. He did some good things and tried to take over without forcing too much. He's the player we've been expecting coming at a great time, but unless the senior step up it is meaningless for this season and he's probably not returning.

If we make the tourney it is progress. And Honestly I think Louie only won two BET's if I am not mistaken. MJ not directed to you as you have always been even keeled but a vast number of posters have unrealistic expectations, shout down anyone who dissents then are the first to cry when those unrealistic goals aren't met.

I agree today was miserable but as long as it didn't tremendously affect our NCAA berth....whatever. Again I was around for the "glory years" and I think we lost in first round more than we didn't. So just making it is a huge improvement from what has gone on the last decade and a half.

Do you think it's an unrealistic goal to expect your team to play a competitive game against a team they had beaten twice in the regular season? I don't.

The funny thing about sports is that when you fold in big moments at critical points in the season, you can undo a lot of nice things that happened earlier on. And right now, that's what this team is doing.

The advantage is all for the team that lost twice. They have tape shoved down their throats on everything they did wrong. We beat them twice comfortably and the game plan was essentially to do the same thing. Providence punched us in the chin and we never recovered. We became one-dimensional and it was like watching a 2013-2014 game all over again.

The truth is, Dunn is just way better than anyone we have. Keeping him corralled for three games...just not happening. It's quite a feat we beat them twice to begin with, but shooting 60% from three helps.

This is a devastating loss for all of us. The players and the staff must be down more than we can imagine. I hope and pray that this outcome prevents the same next week. If it does, it was worth it. We are all disappointed, but we are dancing and we don't do that often. Time to lick our wounds and get back to it. If we do the same thing next week, the complaints will be valid and deserved. Right now, we know we have at least one more game to prepare for and a crap load of tape to show us exactly what needs to be changed. Believe me, the seniors, especially Dom and D'lo, are sick to their stomachs right now with how their last ever Big East and MSG game just ended.

Marillac maybe they should have been sick to their stomach's after losing to Nova by 37 instead of just writing it off as meaningless as most here suggested and they wouldn't have gotten blown out again today. Make changes-it is a little late for that, how about just not spitting the bit.

Whether we win a game in the tournament will all come down to the match up. If we match up well against the team we can win. If not, Lavin is not going to install a game plan or make a winning strategic adjustment.

That's the deal.

I don't know why I waste my time on these sites with all the negativity.
This team sh*t the bed today. We don't need 8,000 posts to bring us down further. I was so excited I could barely sleep last night. I'm upset and disappointed with the outcome like everyone else...not just for me, but I wanted it for those kids and the staff too.

I'm going to continue keeping the faith until the season comes to an end. We've missed 80% of the tournaments this century--nearly all of those misses didn't even give cause to have an ounce of optimism on selection Sunday. Given the choice between believing this is how our season will end next week or an opportunity for this team to learn and benefit from...I choose the latter.

My son and I will be wearing our St. John's jerseys on Sunday. Harrison, Dom, Big Shot Phil, and Branch are NOT going out like this.

That's what several of 'em always do. Mainly, to take a direct or indirect shot at the coach. Before someone mentions anything about being a "Lavin apologist" or some other silly arse colloquialism for rooting on the coach.... Far from it. I don't care who's coaching the team. Just win! Anyway.... Heck! Some folks have even went as far to shoot down a player or two.

A friend of mine invited me out to watch the Hoyas/Bluejays game (as, he's a Hoya fan). I pulled out my phone, and allowed him to read some of this stuff from the board, and the first thing he said (chuckling), "Some people take this shite too seriously."

There are several guy's (only a handful, though) on here who, like me, wanna win (and, win BIG), but put's stuff in perspective. Y'all know who y'all are.

Most of what you say is true but people will vent after big losses and no one is calling the kids an embarrassment just the effort and results from the loss were embarrassing more for them than for us.
The psychological effects from being blown out at Villanova may have lingered while Providence has been on a high. I agree that our non existent bench has been a major handicap and that is on Lavin.
