President Bobby

It will actually be pretty easy to find a great candidate if St. John's is willing to do one thing. But that thing is opening up the checkbook. There are a ton of worthy candidates at top schools who move on because their path to the job they really want is blocked by someone who won't be retiring any time soon.

Stanford, for example, just lost a highly regarded vice provost to become president at another school.

This makes too much sense, which means St. John's won't do it.

Last time around many myself included wanted a layperson. Someone from outside the mom and pop SJU bubble. They went that direction and chose Bobby. Was it a rousing success. Did he take SJU to new levels? No. Was it a failure or disaster? No not that either. I’d again prefer to go outside the SJU bubble and as LJSA said see what’s out there. But Maher and Simons should without question be seriously considered as well. Pair them with two external people and may the best person win.

Father Maher has made his bones as President of Niagara University for the last 6 years. One Vincentian school to another . He,d be a good choice

I don’t disagree that he’d be a good choice. I’d still prefer a layperson as President.

With all respect to Father Maher, a very nice individual, StJ's should set sights higher than someone who has been President of a suburban college in Lewiston, NY with an undergrad enrollment of just 2800 students. Niagara University accepts 89% of its applicants and has a poor 7 year non graduation rate of 27%,

I am unaware that the academic footprint of Niagara University has improved during 7 years Father Maher has been its President..

That said, my guess is that if a member of the Vincentian Order wants to be president of St. John's then that will happen.

I suspect Mike Simon will get a good look & hope they don’t lose him if they go in another direction again.

I have no knowledge of Fr Maher , except as he has advanced through the Vincentian Chain of Command during his Academic Career. Has had association with DePaul University in addition to being President of Niagara these last few years . Many here speak well of him and that is a Plus . He’s also a Alum . I have no way of knowing but , was he a protege or supporter of Father Harrington ? And , was he considered for the Presidency after Fr Levesque completed his Interim year ? Just curious .. In my mind , and even before the likely improvement of our BB Program , the new President needs to be totally committed to improving the Academic Rankings of the University . Every single school in the BE has much higher US News and World Reports than St John’s . That’s a fact and I’m sure it’s a issue many Alums feel strongly about . I do know from notable Posters here that the School is trying its utmost to advance its Academic Reputation and that needs to
Continue . So , maybe a rigorous National Search is the best option with several Candidates emerging , including Fr Maher .

Someone close to Father Maher who used to be a presence here has been pushing for him for a couple of years now. If the choice is a Vincentian and it's Mike Maher's namesake I'm all in.
I'm all in on Father Maher and his close relationship to God he just might eradicate the hell like heat from Carnesseca Arena

He's got $600,000 + reasons why not to go in another direction. But agreed, a great man, well deserving a shot to be President.

Do not know the name of the Vincentian but there was a great interest in an administrator at DePaul . He was not available at the time that Bobby was chosen .

So nobody external?
This list is going to have the usual suspects. Guaranteed.
Maybe I missed it, but I read it said "national" search with a 3rd party search firm. Did you mean an external member of a hiring committee?

You're right. I missed it. I went down to the part with the areas listed.

That being said I stand by my prediction. This will have the usual suspects.
