DENVER—Utah Valley's Fardaws Aimaq has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 11-17, the league office announced on Monday.

Aimaq, a redshirt-sophomore center from Vancouver, B.C., Canada, scored a career-high 29 points to go with 14 rebounds and four blocks in a 93-92 overtime win at Seattle U on Friday night. The transfer from Mercer earned his eighth double-double against the Redhawks, which ranks fourth in the country. He knocked down 8-of-12 attempts from the field and connected on 13-of-15 shots at the free throw line.

Aimaq continues to lead the nation on the boards, pulling down 15.1 rebounds per game. He also ranks first nationally in defensive rebounds per game (10.10) and offensive rebounds per game (5.00).

Unless I'm mistaken didn't this team get super hot last year and almost won its conference tournament? I remember seeing them in March and they were on a roll.

I don't necessarily think we can stop big men regardless of whether they play for a low, mid, or high major, but the one tough opponent he played, Aimaq didn't do anything.

Happy we are getting another game in. Wish the game was at noon but it's not like I'll be anywhere other than my couch anyway

WAC Tournament was canceled, so maybe it was Utah State you are thinking about? Although Utah St. did have a good record, they probably weren't favored to beat SDSU in the championship, which they did.

Correct, must be Utah State.  They were led by Sam Merrill who got drafted and is now with Milwaukee Bucks

Justin Champagnie is number 2 in the country at 13.2 rebounds per game.

Kids want to play, so to me Cragg did good job digging up a game. Take everyone seriously though and grab this one. Do agree letting Greg and Posh recover seems wise, but knowing Posh he'll push to play. Greg's injury is more complicated it appears, so caution there seems prudent.

About time that Cragg guy starts earning his pay. Paging Beast! lol

It's great to get a game in and use our OOC allotment.    Why leave games on the table?

FWIW Coached by Mark Madsen ... Stanford double grad, 2-time All-American, 2-time NBA champ, Stanford and Lakers Asst coach. A mix of transfers and Utah HS recruits.  Don't think this is a walkover.

Trivia question - Which Redmen player did Mark Madsen flatten in a game at MSG, more than 20 years  ago?

Erik Barkley.  I thought his season was over after that, and that our year was going down the tubes.  Ironically, he didn't miss a single game, and we wound up in the Elite Eight.  I was screaming for a foul after that play, but when I finally saw the replay a few hours later, it was totally clean pick.

Pre-NIT.  We blew two big leads and lost heartbreakers to Stanford and Purdue.  I was at those games and the Garden was rocking.  I don't remember an incident between Madsen and Barkley, however, but memories fade.

I was there also and don't recall.  Do recall losing several close games we should or could have won.  Made team stronger instead of feeling sorry for themselves.  Small team and short bench and came within inches of  the final four.

Agree on Barkley, but it was Madsen's teammate Peter Sauer with the pick -

A few moments later, the Red Storm (3-1) received a scare when Barkley ran into a blindside pick by the 6-7, 225-pound Sauer. With 38 seconds left on the clock, Barkley lay motionless on the court for more than five minutes. A stretcher was brought out to the court, but he was able to walk off without aid. Fortunately, the injury was not serious. He was hit in the temple and knocked out for a few moments but was fine after the game.

Sadly Peter Sauer died at 35 due to an enlarged heart while playing basketball-

Thank you for the correction. They were bookends. We did get payback later in the game. Artest hip- checked their blue chip guard into the seats, under the basket, and put him out of the game.
