No shame to lose on road to Butler recently, but falling behind by 22 was jolting to me considering this is a talented, veteran team. Lack of consistency bit us in rear, but hope this talented, seasoned group realizes it is time to beat GT & get a road win at Creighton.

Heading into subsequent Duke & Marquette games with those two wins in hand would give me confidence we can get on a run, get to semis at least in BE Tourney & dance. It would be a shame to squander this opportunity.
Agree, and unfortunately opportunities have already been squandered @SHU and @Nova. On balance team has not done enough through first 7 conference games to get going. While it's not must win territory yet, team can't afford to keep squandering, and having lost 3 of 4 now likely can't afford any more stretches like that either. Now is the time to right the ship, especially coming off a bye week with two winnable games in front.

If we don't put these two in win ledger concerned we may regret it quickly. Even with a split, would need to go 4-3 over a 7 game stretch that includes Nova and @Marq just to get to 8-8...and would then be faced with must win games to close the year @DePaul and @Xavier. SJU basketball being SJU basketball, would prefer to avoid that scenario :)

By contrast the way things are falling in conference getting these next two would almost put us back in the driver's seat. Need to stop teetering between being a great and above average team and get on a run.

As usual, excellent post.

I really think it boils down to being an inconsistent team. We have the horses. We blew out Marquette and I was at the game. Even before tipoff I said to the guy next to me, "We are not losing this game". Seemed to be a popular feeling that day. Well, we had the pedal to the floor and never looked back, blowing out a very good team. If that team from the Marquette game shows up most of the time, then we will be in a good spot. The problem is that we have one of those games and then seem to take other games off and it's a slopfest. This is an issue going back to last year. Duke and Nova go down, then we get throttled by DePaul. The talent has been there but I can't understand why we can't play 3 straight games like the Marquette game. Intensity is up one day and down the next.

Oh this is a must win, look at the next 3, lose.at duke split vs fu, marq.
That would be 4-6.
This game is huge.

Agree. We lose this game, we do not dance IMO.

When we respect the opposition and recognize that we have to play 40 minutes of intense, focused and disciplined basketball we look great - in fact the best in BE. When we ease off the pedal, all of our warts show.

Nova does not nearly have the best talent in the league. What they have is a commitment to make the opposition uncomfortable. You could see the difference in how Butler played against us vs. Nova. In the Nova game, guys like Tucker did not have space and as a result did not have the same level of success.

They do have Paschall!

It blows my mind that two guys, Booth and Paschall, can lead Nova to a undefeated B.E. record. Yet we have the best starting five in the conference. Obviously it comes down to coaching and our scouting. As posted after the Butler game I could not believe how free Tucker was left open. Even in the second half he was left wide open for a three while Simon sloughed off to the middle, probably at least 8 to 10 feet away.
Speaking of coaching I haven't been too impressed with Ewing. Instead of getting the ball into Govan in the last minutes of their close games they have their guards control the ball outside. Hopefully this will continue Sunday. He'll get his points anyway, important we stop the others. And please Chris don't let Blair take open threes.
I love the garden and wish we play more games there. Back in the days I didn't care if we were playing the likes of Bobby Knight's Hoosiers, Duke or Michigan. Always believed we would win. MSG is our home.

I don't think it was coaching but failure to execute. Mullin clearly stated one of the plans was to cover their shooters like Tucker. Simon and team did not follow the plan.

Sounds like the rest did Shamorie Ponds's back well. Said today he's feeling better and it's not an issue. #sjubb

Looking forward to who on the team will assume the leadership position, Not the coaches. Need a leader in the locker room that will keep them focused and intense for every game.

Off to my place in Naples Fl & will watch game with some GT alums. Feeing good about getting back on track!

I guess I should have said as far as Big East teams making the Big Dance, it seems like under .500 in Conference has been the Death Knell, even .500; but Adam will correct me if I am wrong.

Enjoy!

Knicks playing tomorrow night. Does that mean our logo and that of the Big East will not be on the court?

St Johns will host two of the Catholic league’s best prospects — RJ Davis and Moussa Cisse — tomorrow against Georgetown, per source.
