How’s is it BYU can get so many bigs on their team and we struggle to find a center to commit
Pick any season of BYU basketball and most bigs on the roster are Mormons from Utah. They weren't coming to St. John's no matter what we did. Our main problem seems to be that devout Queens/Brooklyn Catholics are apparently less likely to grow to 7 feet.

If they could get a Jim McMahon, we could get a Shawn Bradley! Although I would settle for a Danny Ainge...

I think as SJ fans, you'd be crazy to expect anything less than a 3 pt clinic by BYU, which even if we play good defense, we may not be able to stop. So I think it could go either way. Our best bet is to use our athletic advantage and try to wear them out. We will need lots and lots of fastbreak points and we need to finish. We should also be driving all day at their big men. We will get blocked a lot probably given major size discrepancy between our guards and their bigs, but at least we can get them in foul trouble. We've seen before where Creighton can kill us raining 3's all day even when we are more athletic. We have also seen where we have killed Creighton when their 3's stopped falling and we used our superior athleticism. If BYU shoots any less than 40% from 3 they will be in trouble. But in my gut of guts I feel a 50%+ night coming. Will be tough but winnable if we play like we did last game.

I expect a tough game that we can and should win. Would be nice to have Roberts available against their bigs. Any word on his injury status?

MCNPA, my use of the term “lock” in replying to your post was wrong as you made no predictions in your previous comments. My mistake, my bad, my apologies.

Was thinking the same. Law of averages, especially with the off shooting night yesterday.

Did Josh get hurt again? He just had shoulder surgery and a summer rehab. He put on some muscle. He should be more effective against big men.

My prediction is you will see more of a very aggressive half court defense pushing 3point shooters off the line. with this in place you will see spurts of pressing and trapping at certain points in the game. With no Dunn and Roberts and McGriff and Caraher a step behind the others it is key we conserve fouls and energy especially in the 2nd half.

Per @StJohnsBball

It’s almost 30 years exactly since #SJUBB last met BYU on Dec. 8, 1990.

Malik Sealy scored 26 to lead St. John’s to a win in the championship game of the Cougar Classic, a day after scoring 29 against George Mason.

Or any of the Ozmonds.

Kiss of death from The Athletic here...

St. John’s vs. BYU (-2) in Uncasville, Conn., 5 p.m., ESPN2. The Cougars made their Mohegan Sun Bubbleville debut on Tuesday against USC. It did not go well, as they lost 79-53 and managed just 0.75 points per possession. Matt Haarms had 11 points and six rebounds in his second game back after spraining his ankle. Meanwhile, St. John’s is pushing the gas pedal; the Red Storm ranked third in adjusted tempo going into Tuesday night and ran by Boston College, 97-93, on Monday. Not sure if either team is actually good, but BYU still seems to be figuring out its new personnel, while at least St. John’s knows what it is. The pick: St. John’s

They have Haarms the kid who played for Purdue? He's huge, and good. Hopefully we can get our tempo because we have nobody who's even going to be a speed bump for him inside.

There's no way BYU will look as bad as they did against USC, so I'm expecting a better performance out of them. Should be a fun contrast in styles and I'm hopeful that we are up for the challenge defensively. Go Johnnies!

Don’t get me wrong, 7 footers are hard to deal with regardless, but are you confusing him with the other Purdue 7 footer Haws? Harrms is huge height wise but I think we’ll be able to push him around a bit. Haws was an absolute monster.

St John’s guard Rasheem Dunn (concussion) will miss his third straight game today. Still in protoco
