(POST GAME) Xavier, Tues., Feb. 16, 8:30p, FS-1 / 970AM WNYM

Crazy but this is overall one of the best SJU shooting teams in memory. Not one big shooter but we have like 8-9 guys who can make shots. IMO crazy for a SJU team..

People are correctly giving Posh the ROY buzz but what's stopping him from getting the DPOY award as well?? Who deserves it over him? He's a one man press
what was very impressive tonight is he started 1-6 and ended 7-15 with no drop off on defense, composure or decision making...a natural leader. . . One of most "seasoned vets" as a freshman

have we EVER had a better freshman? As good maybe, but better?

Some guy named Mullin may have been a tad bit better as a freshman, but Posh sure is special/media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

As Dan Dierdorf used to say, I'm not so sure. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

Yes that's what Dan Dierdorf used to say. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

Clearly Chris Mullin was great maybe our all time best player BUT as a freshman was he better or did he have more of an impact on our team winning?
I'm not so sure.
Scarry good what we have with young Mr.Posh

When was the last time we had a big that had good hands like Moore does? Its amazing how our guards beat guys off the dribble and just dish off to Moore for dunk after dunk. I think someone stated earlier that he should start over Roberts but I think having Roberts start is working for the team right now. Roberts has been decent defensively and rebounding the ball and then Moore comes off the bench with that high energy and emotion, its perfect.

I cant remmebr a more cosister player in a while like Champagnie is. He gets a quiet 20 every game and has really become a better rebounder as of late. He isnt a ball dominant scorer, just so efficient and a great team player. Is it me or does every mid range jumper or 3 he takes seem like its going on? Such an easy player to root for.

While Julian is reminding me more and more of Malik Sealy, Vince Cole is reminding me of Chucky Sproling.
Cole needs to learn from Isaiah Moore's progress.
Don't go out of your lane.
Just as Moore has thrived by finishing plays around the basket and running the floor, Cole needs to realize that his best weapon is catch and shoot.
The playmakers can get the ball to him. He just needs to wait for it and not force things. He really doesn't have the foot speed or ball handling to create his own shot at this level. But he can play D, rebound and catch and shoot.

What a win!  Some quick thoughts...

Posh is truly special and a unique talent.  Let's enjoy the ride with him.

Champ is a legit BE POY if not this year, in coming year(s).

Cole, while he had an off shooting night--despite hitting a nice 3 that I thought would get him on track--did enough little things on D and rebounding that made him a nice contributor last night.

You can never underestimate the importance and leadership of Dunn and Williams to this team.

Moore is playing the way I had hoped he would.  And I agree with the observations about his hands; that's his playing point guard background before his growth spurt.

I really liked the team's resiliancy and poise in the last 5 minutes when, after a couple of empty possessions, I thought momentum could shift to Xavier for a run at the end; it didn't happen.  Kudos to the team for holding them off.

Whats even more amazing is that some of our fan base was writing off Moore early in the season. Saying he couldn't play at this level. Agree that things are working the way they are now. Other then some minor teeeks, and barring injuries, I think CMA will stick with what he's doing for the rest of the season. The one exception is that maybe GWill starts over Cole at some point, but even that I'm not so sure of. Anyhow,  whatever CMA is doing is working. That's all that matters.

Congratulations to all of we St. John's basketball fans who've had our share of frustration and heartache.
These are good times and we, coaches, players DESERVE THEM!
could be a sensational season
who would want to play us?
wow

A few thoughts:

1.  We won the battle on the glass but (except for a stretch in the second half), crashing the boards didn't seem to be a focus for X this game.  Possibly it was because they were down a rebounder for this game, but it felt as though they were looking for more perimeter spacing to attack us from the outside.  It worked for them in spots, but not enough.  If I were a Xavier fan, after what they did to us inside last time and after watching us play Butler, I might have some questions about the coaching strategy.

2.  We played a solid game, but we also hit a lot of shots that you can't count on.  Marcellus can be a streaky good 3 point shooter, but he's not a 100% from 3 guy.  TBH my favorite moment was when he got the ball at the top of the key and DIDN"T shoot it - he passed to the wing for an entry pass to Moore for (another) dunk.  The maturity not to continue to jack the ball up when he was hot, and the focus on making the best play was beautiful to watch.  Dunn, like Marcellus, can be streaky good with the midrange jumper.  Greg has some range on his 3.  But for all of that to happen IN THE SAME GAME is not something I would expect to see on a regular basis.

3.  Julian had another invisible 20 point night.  You don't even notice he's there some times, but the points are there at the end of the night.  There will be games when other players don't shoot the lights out when he will need to be more visible in the offense.

4.  I know we don't love Wusu inbounding the ball, but IMO it's another example of Anderson teaching.  He put him in the spot against Butler, and then he put him right back in the same spot against X.  Anderson clearly believes the kid can be a good option in that situation and he's giving him the opportunity to learn how to do it.  So far those sort of Anderson build-for-the-future moves have paid dividends more often than not.

5.  The best thing about the game is that the team maintained focus from beginning to end and put together a complete game.  The DePaul game is a re-run of playing Providence after Nova - the key is for them not to overlook the opponent and put together another complete effort.

I am knit picking here, but one additon I would like to see to our offense is the drive and kick.  A few times when Dunn went to the rim yesterday, he drew three defenders.  I know, in recent years, we have been thirsty for a spot-up 3-point marksman.  Well, I think we have that guy now (Cole).  Cole comes with his deficiencies, but he does rebound the ball and can definitely knock down the shot.

I am thinkning late in the shot clock, the drive and kick-out could be an extra wrinkle for our offense.

Some have commented on Moore or Earlington starting instead of Roberts. I Like Moore are Earlington on the 2nd unit better. They can find their offense a little better that way. I have increasing confidence that the 2nd unit can hold and even extend a lead. Moore, Earlington, Wusu, GWill are multidimensional and compliment each other well. It's a good unit to trust as long as guys stay in their roles. Moore could have put up more outside shots after his made 3 yesterday, but didn't. Credit to him for not heat checking

Great win. Great team win

i thought turner and fanta were excellent. Real college feel to the broadcast. You can feel the passion they have for the college game in the broadcast.

great seeing Greg Williams flying around again. He cut hard, hit a big shot, defended well and his poise is what we need at the end of the game

congratulations coach on #400!!

CINCINNATI ENQUIRER
https://www.cincinnati.com/sto...keteers-visit-st-johns-red-storm/6774159002/.      Interesting that not 1 word on the Johnnies . It was all on his team .  X has a lot of guys who can shoot the 3.  The game got a lot closer in the final minutes than the final score indicated .  We started to turn it over , foul when there was no purpose to fouling and were fortunate X went cold down the stretch ., I don't agree with the notion that CMA is teaching WUSU to inbound the Ball . The Kid looks uncomfortable doing it and it's best left to working on it iin the off season . It's already cost 1 game and it could have last night too . And , Mike has to do a better job on setting the table for the inbounds late in games . The Ball should wind up in Julian's hands period the end . Maybe Williams as a bailout option . Not Dunn or Earlington . Maybe Posh as the inbounder.  Poor end of game decisions can be costly .  Lastly , it's unfair , despite the Posh accolades to compare him to Mullin's first year or 4 years . Posh is carving out his own credentials and they will be many in his career here . Let him add them up , without creating controversy .

It's becoming fun to watch the Johnnies once again. This team can beat you so many ways. In the paint. Shooting 3s. 40 minutes of hell. We finally have a bench that can replace the starters with no significant drop off. Winning on the road is such a big improvememt. CMA has St. John's New York's team. Kudos
