(POST GAME) Villanova, Wed., Feb. 3, 9p, CBSSN / 570 AM WMCA

Before I read this thread my strongest sense about the game was that Moore made an immense contribution.  I think he hit one jump shot in rhythm and time and again I saw him come up high, set picks, and roll to the basket.  The message to Villanova was "I am here to play team basketball.  My play will never let you take a defensive possession off.  If we miss a shot all 6'11" of me will be trying to put it in the basket, repeatedly if necessary.  I will help on defense in the lane.  While I am playing team basketball, my two teammates are not.  They are running jet sweep right and jet sweep left.  Those are football plays.  They are also very good at football.  They are called Duke and Dylan.  If you get in their way you will likely be injured or in pain or both.  If they miss a shot, so many defenders will have been pushed aside by their approaches to the basket that it should be relatively easy for me to dunk the follow-up rebound.  Have a nice day."

Coach specifically mentioned the toughness of both Wusu and the Duke.  i agree.  I loved the lineup when those 2 were on the floor.

I agree, however Earlington has to be more forceful in putbacks on the offensive boards. Missed two chippies last night.

I have to think Wright didn't have his team ready last night, probably expecting Gillespie to break our pressure easily. Nova looked terrible getting the ball across halfcourt. And that's on their coach.

Jay Wright even before the game was fully aware of Posh made commentary about how he makes people fear his defense.  Her references the Marquette game as well.

I think that it didn't help them that they only played 6 games and came into it feeling unstoppable.  When we finally played, it was a buzz saw.  We certainly hit them at a good time.  I know Jay Wright had his team prepared as best he could but I think their layoff and lack of as many games didn't help.

I also believe that Jay Wright had no idea we would play the team-defense we played.  We played straight-up man, with very little help and even Nova's superb ball rotations weren't working, which is where they get most of their offense and good shots generated.

I've heard Nolan Richardson. CMA, and most recently TJ say , we won't adjust to our opponent. We will make them adjust to us, and take them out of their comfort zone.

I think although the Dukes stats haven't been great lately,, he provides things you don't see in the box score, and nobody is out muscleing him.

Not sure if it had been posted here, but sometime earlier today, Jay Wright tweeted what a great job SJU did in defeating his team last night. Gave all the credit to us. Not sure of the exact words. Very classy.

What a great team victory. I'm still hoarse from screaming at the TV throughout the game. What impressed me the most is the noticeable growth and improvement our players have made during the course of the past two seasons. Posh and Wusu don't play like freshmen anymore, Cole and Moore have adapted well to D-1 basketball after a period of adjustment, Champ plays like a well seasoned upperclassman, Dunn has blended really well with Posh in the backcourt and Williams, Roberts and The Duke are playing with much more confidence these days. Kudos to the kids for their perserverance and to the staff for their ability to develop talent. I sincerely hope that future recruits take notice of the fact that they will be well coached if they come to St John's

A few weeks ago, the NCAA was a pipe dream and the NIT was also in jeopardy. Now, we have a legitimate shot at the NCAA if we continue to play as well as we have in the past few games. The next month is going to be really exciting. It's a great time to be rooting for the Johnnies!!!

Turns out February 3 is a good day for the good guys!  From 2018:

I was alluding to those 2 games when it came to tempering our sky high emotions after beating Villanova.   It looked like our team that season had turned the corner in a startling way, beating two top 5 teams back to back.   We settled down to earth a bit after that.   Our team is exciting to watch, and our trajectory is much higher today than a month ago, but still a work in progress that needs a stronger roster to reside among the league's elite.

It took me 3 days to recover from this HUGE win but my cutout at Carnesecca is still celebrating.
With the heat in that arena your cutout was literally sweatring that game out :)

Haven't posted since the big game, but absolutely loved this win!

CMA skeptics.....be gone!

I noticed on ESPN this morning a segment, of which the discussion topic was Top 5 teams losing this week.

The screen switched to a Greg Williams soaring through the air for an emphatic dunk.  It was nice to see that on ESPN a handful of days later.

Props to Jay for giving credit where credit is due.

Jay Wright is a genuine person who deserves all of the accolades he has received.

The day before the Villanova game, I sent him a text saying that while I could not be there in person, my cutout would be. He sent a text back saying "lol", then asked me for Coach Carnesecca's phone number, which I got for him. The day of the game he sent me a text thanking me and saying that he had an enjoyable 30 minute conversation with Coach Carnesecca.

Coach Wright, while a great coach but an even better person with a sense of history of the Big East.
