(POST-GAME) @Villanova, Tues., Jan. 8, 7p, FS-1 / 970 AM
The lack of Keita was interesting. He had the one tip in in the first half and it was nice to have someone under the basket for when we miss a shot. It gets kind of annoying when we don’t even attempt to threaten for an offensive board
To me, that is the most annoying aspect of this team. They are playing well and I am thrilled, but if they do not hit their first shot it is over. There is rarely have anyone under the boards to even contest a rebound.
I missed the first half and had to listen on the Radio; is it just me or does anyone else have a hard time following Minko and the way he calls a game?

Losing Dixon is made worse w/o playing Williams. The players were tired. Someone asked in jest, but I'm asking for real, if Williams is hurt.

I hope this isn’t true

@tominsalem All he did was pass the ball.
We need another threat.
At Williams can goto the hole.
Heard tonight he's definitely gone.
That's a shame.

It's totally unusual for a guy who is gone to be on his feet all game cheering on his teammates. Just doesn't happen.

Terrible loss. On road; checked score continuously; yeah, I’m the ass texting while driving!
It’s the Staff’s responsibility to ‘manage’ its rotation. play Keita; play Trimble; play Williams.
We will not be able to win in the BE with 5 guys—even Ponds + 4 star guys.
We’re in trouble until the Staff ‘gets’ this.

NO excuse for williams to get zero minutes.

2 blown second half leads and one comeback 2nd half lead. 2-2 after 4 better than worst case scenario and not as good as best case scenario

It's ok. Win out now till Gtown MSG game

Come on Chicago you are better than that. Texting while driving is like driving drunk. You could have killed or maimed yourself or others.

I know he was once a regular on this board but I’ve seen Tom in Salem tweet after a lot of our games and it is usually complete nonsense. Believe after the Georgetown game he said we shouldn’t play Keita, who gave us great minutes in that game.

Clown
Agree w Zach B
St. John's takeayways:
1. Needed to be 2-2 though tough 4-gm stretch and got that
2. Mullin needs to go deeper into bench. Don't get no Greg Williams at all. Team was clearly gassed late
3. Ball stopped moving like, like against Seton Hall. Fatigue part of that

Chris Mullin said Greg Williams was available tonight but referred to “in-game situations” when asked why he didn’t go deeper into bench. #sjubb
Greg Joyce
Zach was spot on - fatigue did us in - ball and players stopped moving on offense late in the game. Need to strategically insert subs around the TV timeouts to give the starters a blow without missing too much game time. Keita should have played more and Williams needed to get some run. Can't get it done against a good well coached team with only 6 guys playing the overwhelming majority of minutes.

I guess I will comment again, three of Nova’s starters including Booth, who took over the game at the end, played as much as 4 of our starters. Why wasn’t Booth gassed? He played 39 minutes, as many as any of our players. Paschall played all 40, why wasn’t he gassed?

The only point we were tired was before the 4 minute timeout because it ran so far past 4 minutes (I believe down to 1:58). I don't know what our timeout situation was but the staff should have used one if they had it. That could be a tool to use later in the year in close games...stack it with the last tv timeout.

I thought we were clearly the better team. I feel like we should have run them out of the gym. There weren't enough easy points for us. They were completely one-dimensional but they made so many tough shots.

There is a lot that can be learned from this game. Offensive rebounding needs to improve. Ponds-Figgy-Clark need to be the guys late...Heron can earn his way back later.

Athletes win games early, skill wins games late.

Jay Wright has had our # (and everybody else’s) since Hofstra.
Great coach and a good guy.
And damn, yeah: “Say it ain’t so, Joe!”

Jay Wright is a hall of game coach who has won 2 out of the last 3 national championships. Chris is still learning to coach. Guys like Jay usually figure out how to pull out games like this, especially at home. No knock on Chris, who I love, but he’s going to get outcoached in some of these games for now. Still think we’re the better team.

Jay Wright is awesome but he didn't coach his way to this win. They were chucking contested threes. That's not coaching. We had the better set plays tonight.

Wright only recruits skilled players. We have 4 skilled players and an athlete. Advantage Nova late in that scenario.

This was a tough road loss in a tough conference. Just a close loss. No real complaints. Effort was there. Officiating was awful once again but I have come to expect that of the Big East and NCAA.
Two things I would hope CM would work on with the team.
1-The moving screen was called on Heron again. Both Clark and Heron have committed this foul on several occasions this season. Especially harmful when they are almost always in foul trouble and we need them so badly.
2- The fouling of 3 point shooters has got to stop. They need to work on it. I wish there was a stat but I would guess we lead the league in this foul. Heck someone even put a 4 point play against us this season.
On to DePaul.
Regarding #2, the fouling of three point shooters appears to go hand-in-hand with us guarding the 3 pointer better, in general. I don't want to just say back off, because we've seen what happens when we do that.

It's frustrating, but it's also a slippery slop to just say "don't do it."
True but I never said don't do it. I just think it is something that needs to be reinforced as it is hurting us too frequently (or at least it feels that way without numbers). Running through shooters (as has been the case several times) is not a technique. Guys need to identify shooters and stay close enough to them to obstruct not necessarily block. I don't know just think its the attention to details that could make a difference. Oh well let's get DePaul.
