(POST-GAME) @Villanova, Tues., Jan. 8, 7p, FS-1 / 970 AM

Two and 2 with our schedule is not a big deal if we win the next 4. If we don't, and have hiccups against Depaul or Butler, for instance, then going 2 and 2 early wont matter anyway. Got to win almost everything at home, and go 500 on the road. Then do OK in the Big East tournament to go dancing.
12-6 in big east and we are dancing. Don’t need to do anything in big east tournament if we go 12-6. I’d probably say the same for 11-7 too
My guess is 10-8 and we’ll still be dancing.

This is a game we handed to Nova in the last 5 minutes of the game.
Wright told his players to focus on Ponds and limit his taking over the game. Mission accomplished.
Wright was the better coach tonight hands down.
Mullin and staff ran their players into the ground. Best example is Justin Simon. In the last 3 minutes he missed 3 shots and committed two fouls. Even the most kiss ass homers here know you don’t want Simon either handling the ball or shooting in the closing minutes.
Nova played 9 players and the four subs collected half of the team’s rebounds. Our bench was Trimble. Inexplicable blunder by the coaches.
Got bad calls on 3 occasions which factored into the game but the biggest no shows were Clark and Heron. They took 19 shots but hit 25%. Both committed bone head fouls. There may be only a one inch difference between Paschall and Clark but a world of difference in overall talent. Mullin chose to guard Paschall with the 6’3 Trimble. Are you fckg kidding? Keita should have been on him until he fouled out.
We lost to exhaustion and not respecting every possession and that is on Mullin.

The bottomline is Simon needs to sit late or this loss won't serve as a lesson. How many times and how many different ways does this kid need to screw up because he's nervous before things change? Forgets stats...use your damn eyes. The kid dribbles the ball to his chin. He cannot change directions or speed. He cannot shoot OR finish off the bounce. He turns it over passing and he can't shoot free throws late. Why is that kid on the game late? I don't care if he has 20 20 and 20 he will blow it late because he stiffens up. He's the exact opposite of LJ.

Regarding Simon, I think a lot of you are ignoring how important he is on the defensive end.

He needs to be in down the stretch. For defense. On offense, he needs to be utilized better. Stop hanging around the perimeter. Get him the ball down low.

HaHa! Have to agree he gets so out of control beyond capabilities and seldom thinks situationally. Frustrating.

Now about your SJU “rout” prediction :)
I waited 4 years to have a little fun. I have no doubt that Simon will lose us whatever NCAA tournament game we are close in. He is completely tone deaf to his weaknesses and he is historically bad at the end of games. He freezes up every single time.

Of all my years around basketball I've never seen two kids like Dom and Simon who are so good in certain areas and so bad in others insisting on playing to their weaknesses.
Not sure why all the hate for Simon. He missed the teardrop at the of the game but it’s a shot he usually hits. He shot three wide open threes and missed them all tonight. He’s a pooor shooter but is capable of knocking down an open three and actually did so at a pretty good clip last year. I can live with it.

Heron bothers me way more than Simon. He reminds me of Ahmed. He tries to bull his way into the lane and is a turnover machine. He was highly advertised and frankly I’ve been disappointed.
He missed a tear drop? He air balled an uncontested layup!!!

The bigger problem is why is he taking that shot? Why does he always take those shots? He is the least skilled kid we have. He plays with a national player of the year candidate. He missed two fts late in every close game. Why is he taking the ball to the basket?!!!'n why?

That has to be Ponds. I don't care if Simon is 15-15 and Ponds is 0-15. You don't live and die by a kid like Simon.
Let's not kid ourselves. Ponds was awful the last 3 minutes, and was lucky to get the foul call on the spin when he was clearly stripped. Simon fills up the stat sheets. Sure he acts sometimes like a fast, uncoordinated colt that doesn't know how run sometimes, but he is far from the reason for the 2 losses.
I can live with the best player we've had in decades coming up short. Hell, I could accept 10 straight missed layup and jumpers from Ponds. Our best trying to do his best...ok.

What I can't accept is our least skilled and least clutch player ignoring his weaknes under a minute when Figueroa, Ponds, and Clark have ice water in their veins.

He needs to be off the floor late in close games. Offense-defense subs is possible. If he's on the court he needs to be hidden. He plays scared.

Did you notice he had 9 assists? He is not the reason we lost the game.
I agree. That was not a bad shot by Simon, a floater he usually makes. Don't particularly like his three point shots though.
Why slow down the offense with 4 minutes to go, led to terrible rushed shots.
And as far as Heron's game tonight just look at his defense. He has to be a slow learner, especially having three three point fouls thus far. Time to wake up. And missing that rebound off a missed foul shot in the waning minutes didn't help either.
Thought Figueroa would guard Paschall not Heron.
Had lead all game but took too many threes allowing Nova to stay in the game.
Booth and Paschall did make some difficult shots.
I like to see more cuts and drives to the basket and less three pointers. Not going to the foul line shooting threes.
Trimble played some nice defense and rebounded well.
Nova's squad is not that good, ripe tonight for a blow out. We are the best team in the B.E. and should have won tonight.

Ponds or Simon dribble 10 to 15 seconds before we get into the offense. We’re forced to jack up a poor shot as the clock runs out.
They beat us a number of times on fifty fifty balls and also got rebounds on foul shots when we had inside position
We simply are not a good rebounding team. Also, we live and die by the three point shot.
340th on the offensive glass out of 351 teams. And I didn't see any big name programs in the next 11.
The lack of offensive rebounding is due to the style that we play. We are a guard heavy team that shoots alot of 3's......that's not usually a good combination for getting offensive rebounds.

Simon is great. I have no doubt I could put that kid in the NBA with 20 lbs and a mental shift to forward. He needs to play to his strengths. He's strong and explosive. He's long. He's exceptional in the paint. He just sucks on the perimeter. Why is he there then!!!

How could anyone think Heron is playing pro? Is there a league in Burkina Faso? Awful at handling the ball, worst was when he was so nonchalant and someone came behind him to knock it free, he was the only person in the arena that didn't know what was happening.
If we are going to play chuck up threes offense for a quarter of the game, can we at least get one guy looking for a rebound? Simon got one by mistake in the first half, easy points.
Sure Trimble played well, but he's just a passing machine on offense, need more than that.
Can't understand how Simon doesn't know the shot clock is running down when he's standing in front of his bench.
No big deal though, trust the process, next time 8 guys play instead of 6 and it's a win.

Does Mullin think this is last year when we had no bench?

Tonight was 9 on 6, yeah Keita gave us 5 minutes, but nothing in the 2nd half.

How does any coach expect to win plaing only 6 guys, we the fans know you need to play your bench, but coach doesn't?
Williams gotta be sick or injured, and hope Keita didn't injure his knee.
Trying to give Mullin the benefit of the doubt, gotta be a reason.
If both are fine, then uhhhhhhhhhh.

The lack of Keita was interesting. He had the one tip in in the first half and it was nice to have someone under the basket for when we miss a shot. It gets kind of annoying when we don’t even attempt to threaten for an offensive board

Seems like St. Jean manages the rotation/minutes...

Really never see Mullin calling for the substitutions

Keita's +/- was -11 in those 5 minutes.

Seriously disagree with all the Simon hate going on. Prior to that missed floater, he made his last 3-4 drives and was posting up well. With how Shamorie was playing st the end, Clark hot and cold, LJ hurt..... I have no problem with Justin taking it hard to the lane.

Mustapha is most puzzling to me. His swings from hot to cold are so extreme and he seems to foul on every defensive possession where he has to challenge a shot. Seems like he’s not moving his feet enough on defense and is then forced to recover aggressively causing the foul issues. Honestly I think there were probably 3-4 more three’s that nova took tonight that we fouled on and refs didn’t call.

Ponds played 39 minutes, Simon 38, Figgy 34, Clark 33 and Heron 24.

Keita played 5, Williams 0 and Trimble 27.
This says it all. Shamorie looked completely exhausted at the end of the game. We can’t be expected to close games playing 6 players. Could Keita really not get more then 5 minutes today? Would Williams have brought our level down so much they would blow our doors off while he’s on the court? The guys played well, but I know with 6-7 mins left we were losing bc everyone was starting to look tired and stopped moving.
Paschall played 40, Booth 39, Gillespie 34. I don’t know why Keita especially didn’t play in the 2nd half but I just don’t buy the gassed theory. We get gassed but our opponents don’t? Yes, we played poorly down the stretch but we also played just as poorly for stretches in the 1st half, were we gassed then? We are inconsistent, and we shift quickly into cruise mode and play very uninspired and unintelligent basketball with a lead. Maybe we will learn from this loss but we obviously didn’t learn anything from the Seton Hall game. We quickly lost 3 or 4 double digit leads tonight and kept Nova in the game.

Here we go again. Dixon is transferring and we could have used him tonight. I recall a kid named Colin Charles who transferred under Jarvis and it hurt us in the loss to Gonzaga because Barkley got into foul trouble. Missing Dixon and the depth he provided is going to sting us and this is example 1

This was a tough road loss in a tough conference. Just a close loss. No real complaints. Effort was there. Officiating was awful once again but I have come to expect that of the Big East and NCAA.
Two things I would hope CM would work on with the team.
1-The moving screen was called on Heron again. Both Clark and Heron have committed this foul on several occasions this season. Especially harmful when they are almost always in foul trouble and we need them so badly.
2- The fouling of 3 point shooters has got to stop. They need to work on it. I wish there was a stat but I would guess we lead the league in this foul. Heck someone even put a 4 point play against us this season.
On to DePaul.

Regarding #2, the fouling of three point shooters appears to go hand-in-hand with us guarding the 3 pointer better, in general. I don't want to just say back off, because we've seen what happens when we do that.

It's frustrating, but it's also a slippery slop to just say "don't do it."

My apologies if I missed a post on the issue, but was Mullin barking at Stephens after the non-calls on ‘Nova’s goaltending and subsequent travel shown/discussed on tv. I was at the game, and it appeared that Richmond had to step-in to prevent Mullin from getting a T, but interested to hear what happened. From my vantage point, Mullin was as animated as I’ve ever seen him (as a player and coach) — which appeared to be totally justified. Still, I’m sure some of his wrath was carried over from the Seton Hall debacle. These refs really did look pretty bad.
