POST-GAME) St. Francis (Bklyn), Wed. Dec. 19, 6:30p, FS-1 / 570 WMCA

Nice win against a team I thought would give us a more competitive game. Thought we were totally responsible for their struggles. Nice win.

What I really loved watching were the rotation players encouraging and supporting their teammates on the court for every positive thing the bench players were contributing. There is a joy and camaraderie among these guys that makes college ball so fun to watch as a fan.

The kids who don't log regular minutes largely bust it in practice. One or two may break through and see impactful minutes this season. But I really enjoyed watching the regulars cheer them on

Our coaching staff has a few guys still in their 20s that our kids can relate to, and I suspect it contributes to some pretty special relationships. Matt is about 31, greg 28, and Chris Huey maybe 26. All are great guys.

Every time I see Williams and Roberts get minutes, I see both talent and potential. Obviously Roberts is raw, but he plays with enthusiasm and guts, and as the drill sergeant said, sometimes guts is enough. What I like about both is that they play each minute as if they are in a close game. Williams plays tight on his man even when there is a 30 point lead. Roberts crashes the boards as if each rebound matters. There are good things to come from both.
Fewest complaints after a game that I can recall for 25 years.
Admittedly I didn't watch the game last night but looking at the box score, Paul must have taken his compliant to the compliant thread on the FT shooting. 11-22.

Clark's 4th block of an attempted layup made ESPN's Top 10 plays of the day (came in at #2)
I thought Earlington's layup off his missed FT would as well
I never saw a play like that in my life!!

I actually thought Simon's dunk in the beginning of the game had a better shot, to be honest.

Look for Earlington's FT rebound to make the "Not Top 10" that they do on Friday's. That, of course, would be an indictment on St. Francis, not us, but since Earlington will be the only guy to have his name mentioned, he'll achieve some infamy for doing the right thing.

I agree, seeing the players cheer for the bench players was the best part for me.

After Earlington missed the FT and got the rebound and lay up, I thought he would get teed up for delay of game or some such nonsense. He fooled me too as I thought it was a 2 shot foul.

Same here. I was expecting a technical!

Not my issue, he is crazy. Good thing he was not "somewhat acquainted" with Eugene Lawrence or Phil Greene. Then we would have had big issues.....
And just for the record unlike a lot of people on these boards I laugh at, make fun of or point out stuff that bothers me about the program but I always root and hope everyone does well for the simple reason that when ST John's basketball is doing well it makes me happy. I have never wished or rooted for us to lose like some clearly do just to prove themselves or their points correct. Though Norm / Geno years tested me in that area.

Sitting in CA last night was an enjoyable experience and while it is only one game and St. Francis is not a powerhouse it appeared;
1 the team shares the ball. Only Heron forced some shots.
2 Mullin's handling of Williams may have been right on. He appears ready to contribute vs the big east competition
3 Even with Clark on the bench the team looks like it can compete vs the big east. Hopefully Kieta gets back and Clark can stay on the court and it won't be easy but this team might be able to play with Heron as the big for stretches
4. The team appears to be improving at just the right time
Since it is an unwritten rule that a poster can never be completely happy why was every St. Francis second half 30 second time out extended to a never ending media time out?

This team looks good!!! We have watched them mature and improve tenfold since game#1 and you have to give credit to the coaching staff! Look at low amount of turnovers! Look at assisted baskets! Look at team rebounding!bThese kids have bought in. AND last night they even defended the three! Also best offensive shooting team here in years! They will do damage in Big East. Not perfect but they can be very good.

Because they called the timeouts right when the media TO would have occurred anyway. If you call a timeout 30 seconds before the media cutoff point, or at the first whistle after, it becomes the media TO. Until about 2 or 3 years ago, St. Francis would have been granted a 30 second TO, and then the next whistle would have been the full media. That was even worse, if you ask me.

Agree not much to complain about last night. The one thing that does continue to plague us is poor foul shooting. We are now below 70% as a team and 3 of our top 6 players are below 60%. That must drive Mullin & Richmond crazy; giving away free points and we are a good shooting team otherwise. The fact that Shamorie shoots the most free throws and hits them at 87% saves us from being even worse than 69%.

I've been saying this for a year and a half now. If we are ahead late in a close game, then Simon can not be on the floor. His free throw shooting is horrible. It seems, with him, like the FT line is just a spot on the court where he does not see the basket well, because his form is all right.

Clark had a great game against Saint Francis but he collected his 2nd foul a few minutes before the half. I wonder if this game was against a better team would Mullin have kept him in the game as he did. I thought Mullin was especially subdued last night and GSJ was back to handling the substitutions and white board.
