(POST GAME) @Seton Hall, Mon., Jan. 24, 9p, FS-1

I said this after Wheeler's first good game:

As an athlete, Wheeler is far more talented than anyone we lost. he has good length, moves extremely well, and can shoot.   He is finding his groove here, but IMO is the kind of athlete Syracuse recruits for the wings of their vaunted 1-3-1 and the kind of athlete we always lamented not getting.   Not sure he will sustain this pace, but as I said then i am confident he will be a valuable piece throughout his tenure here.

Champ was terrible again .How can a shot just leave him for 3  for 3 games?

We needed your very accurate observation to temper the borderline giddiness of this thread.  Now if Dee can just triple post his always pungent observations on the game I feel we'll truly achieve a balance here./media/kunena/emoticons/tongue.png/media/kunena/emoticons/grin.png

I'll take a loss at Villanova as long as they are competitive, don't want to see Creighton Part 2.  Obviously a win would be a HUGE bonus.

But I said if they hope to make something of this season this 3 game stretch of SHU, Nova and PC they needed at least 2 of them with a split on the road.  So first part is done.

Seton Hall pays a physical and aggressive style of ball. They count on that as they don't move the ball well on offense. I thought we surpassed their energy and even their physicality except for that stretch in the last 5 minutes of the first half. Our guys blocked 11 shots and made them work for everything in the paint. Really nice effort and hopefully a launch point for the rest of the season.

Undefeated when Nyiwe hits a three.

Dare I say our front court has some potential? I’ve loved what Stanley has given us last 3-4 times he’s gotten a chance. Soriano improving and wheeler blossoming.
Spot on Mase

Our next 4 games are at Nova, home with PC, at Georgetown and at Butler. We need both road wins and Quad 1 wins. If we can win 3 of those 4 games we'd be 6-5 in the Big East. No easy task for sure and our record at Butler is abysmal but also not impossible by any means if we continue to play with the kind of defensive intensity we showed last night.

Exactly.  Even 2 of 4 keeps us in the hunt at 5-6.

I'm curious if anyone knows if Seton Hall's court is shorter than 94 feet?  It seems to me that CA is smaller but I'm not sure.

PC game is key & “getable”

Huge win last night, but we continue to give up too many second chances. 18 more offensive rebounds for the Hall last night. We must improve on that if we are going add more wins to our ledger.

At this point they need to go 6-0 against Georgetown, Butler and DePaul   Maybe you can get away with 5-1.  But they already have a loss to Pitt and dug themselves a hole in the conference early.  So hard to have anymore bad losses without enough good wins.

I'll not only take that, but I think 3 of 4 is doable.

Based on the net rankings, it looks like the BE could be a 6 team league for the NCAA.

Most bracketologist have 7 teams in right now.  League is very strong this year was plenty of opportunities to get quality wins.

Interesting comment from Willard per Jaden Daly

On St. John’s pressure and rebounding:
“I think what caught us off guard a little bit was their pace, to be honest with you. They played much faster than they did Saturday, and I think their pace offensively kind of caught us off guard, and then just kind of got us on defense and then their pressure — like I said, we beat their pressure early a couple of times — Wheeler and Soriano were terrific around the rim. They didn’t foul, they didn’t give anything easy, they made everything difficult. When those guys are playing that big and that long, they’re tough.”

On what disappointed him most:
“I just thought our effort on the rebounding side really disappointed me most. I thought we did a great job rebounding. If you look at the first four or five possessions Posh got in, he got three offensive rebounds, two putbacks, a foul. That changed the momentum of the game, missed shots and then Posh goes in there. And we did a phenomenal job on him the first game, we boxed out, we made sure we had a body on him. But again, I thought their pace that they played at offensively kind of got our matchups not great, but I thought our effort rebounding was terrible.”

On the difference in Posh Alexander:
“I don’t think there was anything different. I think Wheeler was the biggest difference. I thought defensively he ran and trapped the first half, he was a nuisance all night long, especially defensively. I think Posh plays good every game. Just because he had an off night the other night, we kept him off the glass, I thought that was the biggest thing. You look at some of his made field goals, where’s he at? He’s 7-for-12, he has four offensive rebounds from buckets. That’s a big difference.”

as an aside, are the posters on "rumble in the garden" the same as on this site, but under different names?  And who is that guy, "stepbacktrey," or something like that?

Might be the key for the rest of the season and next year too.

Give Credit when Credit is due.

1) Mathis played very well
2) Coach did a real nice job with sub patterns and timeouts. End of 1st half was again a little shaky.

If Posh can develop a consistent 3 point shot his scoring average gets to 20 as his whole game opens up even more. This is where the staff can showcase their player development attributes.

Nice Win

Agree - think they need to go 5-1 vs DePaul, Georgetown, Butler (2-0 so far, probably losing at Butler but who knows) and .500 against everyone else.  Reclaiming the home loss to the Hall with a road win was big but they need to beat Providence at home and Georgetown on the road.  They can lose at Nova but if they do they have to win at the Garden.  Very little margin for error without wins over Indiana, Pitt, and not pulling it out at UConn.  But do-able if they build on the Hall game.

The team with one player with a strong enough handle and court vision (Posh), beat the team with their one player with those skills out under concussion protocols.  I worry if we don't get Pinzon (who shows evidence of that skill combination) back, not only for the rare possibility that Posh has a bad game, but for the delay in development of Pinzon for next year.
