(POST GAME) Providence, Wed. Feb. 12, 8:30p, CBS SN / 570 WMCA

Happy for the kids and staff. Needed one.

Maybe things on this board can calm down a bit... at least until the next loss

@Mike_AndersonJr
I swear in 17 years of being a head coach I’ve never seen @Iron_MikeMA come out of jacket AND tie.
Goes to show you just how tough it is to watch this team. It ain't easy.
I think he was more upset about the officiating.

Prior to tonight's game with the recent losses mounting up there were posters
calling for a dismantling of the whole roster prior to next season. I hope Roberts, Earlington, Williams and Champagnie all return and if the staff can bring in two or three shooters SJU will compete in the big east
Shooting as a team ranked behind some three hundred teams has been too much to overcome. Tonight they shoot the ball well and look like a different team. I would expect all those four players to show improvement next season and while the addition of some good shooters is a must this roster is not that far behind the top big east teams even though there aren't any five rated players on the roster.
Really good team win, everyone played well tonight. I thought this was the best they've looked defensively since conference play start. Also, they gotta learn to execute down the stretch better, seems like every game when they have the lead under 4 they'll start to get nervous and play sloppy with the ball, gotta clean that up.
Yes, solid defense. Was at game so just going by eye test, but it seemed that we didn’t give as many open 3s.

Just got back from the game. Don’t like these 8:30 PM starts, or actually 8:40. By the time I got up here in CT, roads were icy as hell and it’s sleeting. But I blame those officials. One of the worst officiated games I’ve ever seen, for both sides.

But, let’s be positive. Nice win by our guys. Was a good team effort. Our defense was much better and even though we started breaking down near the end, we held on. Hopefully that’s a good sign of things to come.

Particularly liked Williams’ game. And even more impressive considering he played 29 minutes.

Liked the halftime dog show too! Much better than the guy balancing ladders at the Garden. On to X. Let’s make it two in a row.

We need some blacksmiths up front so our 6'5 guys don't have to hook and hold under the basket trying to battle legitimate bigs.

Nice to see the defense back. Makes a huge difference.

Shout outs to Roberts, who played with great energy, and to Carraher who hit two big shots.

As Tony just mentioned, the officiating was really poor on both sides. Half way through the 2nd half we got killed by a string of bad calls. Then, seemingly to make up for the incompetence, we got 3 or 4 gifts. That's bush league. Just not sure what can be done to improve it.

You have to wonder if, just maybe, Anderson was laying off the pressure in an attempt to protect Heron, since he obviously couldn't give 100% of himself in Anderson's defense. Tonight, there was no backing off (of course, making a few jumpers early also helped set the tone).
It's obvious Heron has been hurting this year and was trying to play through it, CMA had him playing at the 4 spot because he just wasn't moving as quick as he use to. The team may be better defensively without a hurt Heron, but even with Heron hurt he was still the best shooter on the team and was a guy that could give you baskets in bunches, so I think he will be missed from that aspect.

Full game replay, with commercials. Starts at the 12:46 mark of the video.

Also agree with Tony--thought the refs were getting paid by the hour not the game. If both coaches got "Teed Up" that says something.
Got home earlier than Tony but had a nice Irish to chill down and savor the victory.
Real TEAM effort and good coaching job by CMA with use/substitutions of players.
I take the attitude to expect the worst and hope for the best as we will be underdogs from here on out.
Decent crowd tonight and the refs helped to motivate them to be loud.
Feel that LJ may benefit from absence of Heron. And as to Dunn-he cut down on the 3's (only 2 tonight) but was 4 of 5 inside the arc and our best F/T guy. Julian has incredible body control when receiving inside pass, a joy to watch his elevation and agility.

There were 4 Big East games tonight. Our game carried the least amount of implications, so maybe it was only fair that we got the worst refs.

That being said, I think we got the short end of the stick. The hook-and-holds may have been accurate, but that rule has to go, IMO. A lot of times, the person getting hooked, is actually causing it. That appeared to be what happened on the first one, so why reward the guy for it?

I also thought that the T on Anderson seemed quick, whereas Cooley was berating the refs all night, before his late T (and frankly, that stare down afterwards was worthy of a second tech, and the showers for him, IMO).

And, what was with the long look at the replay on that last out of bounds? From the sixth row, I could tell from one look on the monitor that it went off Duke's leg. With the lengthy delay, I almost wondered if the refs were looking for any excuse to give Providence the ball, because it was obvious.

Hook and hold rule instituted a few years ago stemmed from a string bean Purdue center who got tangled up with an opponent and had his arm broken. Typical over reaction by the NCAA. On the Caraher call it looked like he just reached out his arm to break his fall.

Writer states Diallo had a double double in first half with 9 points and 9 rebounds. Someone needs to inform him that 9 is a single digit number.
Please read the article again, the writer stated that Diallo "nearly" had a double double in the first half with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

The life of a St. John’s fan. The teams best p’ayer Is out for the balance of the season , our once highly promising big man is suspended indefinitely and we show up and lead big from early on to beat Providence who has given us a super hard time over the last few years.
Just when all hope was gone our young 2 and 3 star players provide us with increased optimism once again. Looking forward to a repeat.
