(POST GAME) @Providence, Sat., Jan. 8, 12 Noon, FS-1

Ray, been a fan since 1970 and season ticket holder with my brother since 1983.  And while I am usually optimistic and hope to remain so I’m resigned to the fact that we’ll never again have runs of 15-20 years with 20 wins every year or tourney appearances most years.

The game and sport have changed dramatically since those years.

I’d be happy if we could stabilize the program and be competitive most years and make the tourney every other year or so and the NIT most other years.

Maybe that’s settling, but at this point, realistic.   Maybe too optimistic actually.

But I’ll always be a fan of the team, and mostly if the kids who put on the uniform.  It is hard sometimes but I find it’s best to stay positive and keep perspective.

1) our half court offense is not good. No flow no rhythm. This is a reflection of coaching. Sets are well below average for high level D! mens basketball.

2) our defense is not fundamentally send.  The constant scrambling does not work any longer at this level given how the game has advanced.  We are constantly out of position. This is a reflection of coaching.

3) Our kids for the most part all lack overall offensive execution skills. Our shooting is below average and our passing is really weak. We do not possess any players that have a high basketball IQ. The is a reflection of coaching.

4) our overall talent level 1-10 players is not high level mens D1 basketball. This is a reflection of coaching.

Until # 4 from  above changes we will struggle as a Big East Program.

I will continue to watch every game and support the program, But the coaching needs to get better.

We need to get better players. Develop them more effectively once we secure them both offensively and defensively and our in game execution needs vast improvement to be handled much better. All goes back to coaching!!!

The results speak for themselves. You are are what your record is.

What we need to do is ask Louie for his book on defense and offense and go back to a more slow tempo game. We dont have the talent to run and gun with these other schools. Heck we even have trouble with some division 3 schools

Amaze once again like your analysis .Think we will be saying this way to often this season and are record will be terrible.Sure hope I am wrong. Agree,we can’t just blame the players. However, these are the players our experienced  staff said after their evaluation , will be really good. Thoughts of an NCAA bid were ringing in our ears. That ring is gone.Am I to critical
with just one BE game probably so ,but that could change if they beat UConn.Do many think that will happen don,t think so. But we have to be lucky that we shoot great etc  Banking on luck usually does come out well
getting back to where the blame goes after 3 yrs.think it’s with coach and staff. They picked the players they evaluated the talent and were unable to recruit higher talented players. I know you will say Champ had 33 pt game which is nice but mo he still can not dominate to carry the team who has weak shooters. He has not shown when his shot is not dropping he can go underneath at 6-8 an score easily or restrict is shots to 15 footer a d drives.which he will need to do at the next level. We still have big trouble with teams that have really good big men so staffs recruiting did not address this weakness,Soriano is not and will not be the Answer
recruiting is  The players are doing the best they can on their ability.

The question should be are we getting the best out of our current roster?  If not what needs to be done to make that happen?

My view of the game is that there was more positive than negative to take away from it.  The team competed well in a road game against a good opponent, and a number of players who we will need to be contributors stepped up their games and showed that they are becoming more comfortable in the system and will be able to compete effectively against Big East competition.  I though the defense was much improved and is starting to show signs of the pressure Anderson likes to use but hasn't been ready to apply so far this season.

I attribute the loss to three things:

1.  We got reffed, mostly in the first half, but we still clearly got reffed.  At least two of those bad calls involved Soriano, which leads us to...

2.  Anderson's two curious decisions involving Soriano.  One was leaving him in with two fouls in the first half.  He sent Wheeler to the scorer's table, but left Soriano in, I suspect trying to get to the TV timeout which was 2 minutes away.  It backfired when Soriano picked up his third.  Then he started Soriano with 3 fouls in the second half, which also backfired when he immediately (and foolishly) picked up his fourth foul).  That predictably led to the Nate Watson second half explosion that killed us.  My supposition is that Anderson's decisions were related to either (a) letting Soriano learn to play with foul trouble; and/or (b) wanting to continue to show confidence in Soriano after having benched him earlier in the season (these are the sorts of non-box-score factors that most of our fans are apparently clueless about but coaches are not).

3.  Champagnie had a terrible game.  When he got open in the first half his 3-point shots were way off the mark, and then in the second half he passed up at least 4 open 3-pointers because he had lost confidence (which I was frankly surprised by).

If it were not for all three of those things occurring in the same game, I think the result might well have been different, and I also don't think that it's likely that all three will converge again.  That isn't to say that we're going to sweep Seton Hall, we may even get swept - they're really good.  But I think we will compete well in those games and when the season shakes out I think the things that showed up in the DePaul game and this game will land us in 5th or 6th place in the league.

With all the concern on Soriano's foul count, he still finished with 4 and didn't foul out in the total 15 minutes he was on floor.

Think Anderson should have had him play more....even if only would have gotten another 2-5 min before fouling out.

When Soriano picked up his second, Wheeler got to the table too late and the second free throw was already underway. It missed and the sub couldn’t occur.

I could go either way on letting your guy play with 2 first half fouls but seeing as CMA made the decision to take him out, not having wheeler at the table in time was costly.

Amase,

Really enjoyed your postgame podcast - balanced and spot on and a welcome bromide the day after an extremely tough loss in a game I thought we had a great shot at winning. I hear you on bringing up last year's UCONN road win as a turning point, wish I felt confident we can repeat that this win this year. Having said that, if we can win 2 of the next 3 (at UCONN, Gtown at home and at Creighton) we will get that much needed QUAD 1 win and still be very much in the hunt for a dance spot.  In that regard, really hope they find a way to reschedule that home game against Marquette, but looking at both teams' schedules, hard to see how they'll fit it in which will be a shame for the good guys.

Thanks NC, agreed. And thank you for teaching me the word bromide.

In second half of the DP game SJ yielded 49 points and v PC 48. Maybe I am too old school, but that concerns me. Imo, if that becomes a pattern, I just don’t think we have offensive firepower to negate that. Granted PC was bit of an anomaly w reffing issue and gross disparity in FT makes, but defense still seems a problem that has to be addressed.

I did think in first half v PC they defended better, but in second half they had their way with SJ for most part. Lastly, the PC zone in second half took us out of the game frustrating the team it seemed.

On to UConn!

I'm relatively sure in 20+ years on this site this is the first time I've ever seen the word bromide used and yes I did have to google it.

Well done NC !

Amase, I am embarrassed to say that I completely misused that word. I was thinking of it as a tonic for stress but looked it up afterwards and saw it is more associated with hackneyed expressions or perhaps a sedative. Chalk it up to a combination of being tired of watching less than stellar Johnnie basketball and the first signs of senility lol.

Word for tonic for stress- BEER

We had Soriano's sub at the scorer's table when he picked up his 3rd.  Still he should have been yanked immediately on his 2nd.

Watson just had his way in 2nd half.   They did a good job clearing out for him and we should have done a better job doubling up on him.

CMA needs to repeatedly show them the sequence where they effectively got 2 consecutive shot clock violations and tell them that is what SJ defense needs to look like. If you want PT, do this otherwise sit.

Yes, St. John's basketball makes this whole "dry January" thing a real challenge...
