(POST GAME) @Providence, Sat., Jan. 8, 12 Noon, FS-1

I think Champ has been generally very good this year, but what happened to his free throw shooting.  He was tops in the league last year and I think he’s right around seventy percent now.  Strange  stuff.

You could tell he wasn’t feeling it towards the end bc be passed up a bunch of open looks.

Smith has really been an enigma.  He came in with a reputation as a good outside shooter.  This far, he’s shot worse than Dunn without Dunn’s redeeming intangibles. It’s not a function of better competition bc Smith has been getting good looks.

Great post on Smith. Can’t figure that one out.

If Julian shoots like Julian today is this the best we’re gonna play… the loss sucks, the refs sucked and watching Watson abuse us for what feels like 10 years sucks. But is this a positive considering we win if Julian plays like himself w this effort??

or am I crazy?

Its another season w/o an NCAA tourney birth.  And Mike A is on the hot seat once that is official.

But he never had a losing season..

Blah blah blah.

I hope to never hear that again as a reason why Anderson is a great coach

With our upcoming schedule, wed be lucky to go 2-5 in our next 7.         Which is about where we are at the beginning of nearly every BE Season .    If we sweep  Butler ,. G town and DePaul , we will have 6 wins .  Can we split with Xavier , Marquette , PC , Villanova , UCOnn, Creighton ?   I would not take that bet .   On either premise l

He has 3 or 4 years left on his extension ? Let's be realistic 0% chance he is on the hot seat

1) our half court offense is not good. No flow no rhythm. This is a reflection of coaching. Sets are well below average for high level D! mens basketball.

2) our defense is not fundamentally send.  The constant scrambling does not work any longer at this level given how the game has advanced.  We are constantly out of position. This is a reflection of coaching.

3) Our kids for the most part all lack overall offensive execution skills. Our shooting is below average and our passing is really weak. We do not possess any players that have a high basketball IQ. The is a reflection of coaching.

4) our overall talent level 1-10 players is not high level mens D1 basketball. This is a reflection of coaching.

Until # 4 from  above changes we will struggle as a Big East Program.

I will continue to watch every game and support the program, But the coaching needs to get better.

We need to get better players. Develop them more effectively once we secure them both offensively and defensively and our in game execution needs vast improvement to be handled much better. All goes back to coaching!!!

The results speak for themselves. You are are what your record is.

Wusu finished with 20 today but , he needed to score 40 to offset all the turnovers , bad passes , etc he was committing all game . I know it’s uncharacteristic fur him but , he was annoyingly bad today . CMA letting him play as a PG is a mistake , His handle and passing aren’t up to it . Champ ?  Who knows where he was today . It wasn’t him on the Court today .  Give PC and Cooley credit , they defended him well .   I hope we get the same Home Court calls when we play them again . Problem is , we stink shooting Free throws . PC doesn’t .   This team and CMA need to regroup if the season is to be salvaged .

the heat .   I think making the NCAA this season is unlikely , if not impossible . Barring a GTown run to the BE Title .  Time will tell .

Just watched the game. Disappointing. I'm a basketball official, and these guys let the game get away from them. Cooley is a dick, and rants and goes nuts all game. He gains confidence when they don't T him up early. The foul difference was despicable for a game at this level. The BE really needs to look at this crew. Anderson needs to give the ball to Wusu. Wusu is not a PG. Too bad about the fouls on Soriano and the off game from Champ. Nice game by Wheeler.

Meant give the ball to Posh, as the PG.

Missed opportunity. Game was very winnable. Providence is an experienced team benefitting from a lot of continuity - but is not a great team.

We seem to fail to recognize the importance of going downhill and continue to rely on jump shots (which is fine when you’re hitting). When you’re not, the strategy should be ALL DOWNHILL ALL THE TIME and only take wide open jump shots.

Defensively, we need to recognize that the effort and dedication displayed during the sequence in which we effectively forced consecutive clock violations should be the norm, not the exception.

Once Watson got his 2nd foul in the 1st half, our mission should have been to get him his 3rd. Marching orders should have been to get him on perimeter and take him. It’s what teams do to us all the time. Champ had him at top of key early in 2nd half and passed ball…big mistake.

We deserved what we got but the refereeing was ridiculous. Champ was fouled inside multiple times in 2nd half with no call.

Just a really unfortunate game.

Referees
  • Free throw disparity is shameful.  When officials allow that, they are imposing upon the outcome.
  • The call against Soriano 11 seconds into the 2nd half shows they have no regard for the aforementioned point
Champagnie
An off game.  What can you say.

Wheeler
He is definitely playing better and understands his role much more.  He did some great things in today's game, but it is a little too much of.....one good play, one bad play.

Rebounding
Was better today and this is an area where Champagnie has taken another big leap.

Abused by Watson
I am Johnny fan for life and, really, nothing can change that.  But, I am tired of being inferior in the paint.  It has been a problem for well over a decade and, at this point, I would just rather lose in a different way.

On to the next.  This just may not be our year.

There's a website called ShotQuality that tracks the quality of shots every team takes in every game and then assigns an expected score and winning % based on the shots taken in each particular game.

According to ShotQuality we win this game 74% of the time based on the shots that were taken with the expected score being 76-70. I think there's a decent amount of credence to this as we did miss an inordinate amount of layups and obviously Champ normally makes a good chunk of those shots that he missed today. Make of it what you will.

Missing an inordinate number of layups is part of this teams DNA. I think they missed more vs De Paul. They all seem to panic when they get an uncontested layup and force it too hard off the glass. This is a continuous problem.

If they called 3 seconds violation on Watson half the time he was parked it would have been more interesting.

When I played,  I tended to miss a lot more easy shots against superior comp. Had to do with lack of confidence, and  me looking over my shoulder.

Lol.....when I played (which was sparingly while the starting PG rested), the coach told me "take care of the ball and no shots".  I had a decent handle, but could make Rasheem Dunn look like Chris Mullin.

I would guess that most of us have a bigger connection to St. John's basketball than to any pro team. Makes sense since I'm sure many posters are alumni or have other ties to the school. As a long time fan, I am just worn down.  It looks like we don't have the horses this year. Plain and simple. Turns out the transfers out are just better than the transfers in. Every transfer last season had games where they were the difference maker on the winning side. Not seeing that this season. It's Champ or bust, and even a big game by Champ isn't always going to be enough.

This year looks to be a lost season. Early yes, but we have all seen enough to have a feel for things. Next year may well be a disaster. It's getting harder to be an optimist when it comes to St. John's basketball.  However, it is the perfect program for masochists.
