(POST GAME) @Providence, Sat., Jan. 8, 12 Noon, FS-1

This was an incredibly frustrating game as we played a very good 30 minutes of basketball up 55-53. The last ten minutes were terrible. Watson showed up and Champs didn't. On to the next one.

Are you really surprised by the outcome ?

I'm not had providence -3.5 for $500
We constantly under perform against good teams.......

Ref's ridiculous we miss ft's and an off game by Champ. Not going to win with that combo. When we went down 7 with 6 or 7 minutes left I texted the 114 guys that we were done

Off topic: Knight thanks for the excellent job you always do for game threads
On topic: I complained about recruiting year 1 and I have seen little change since then

We were playing well up 50-45 when Champ had a wide open 3 in rhythm to put us up 53-45 and missed it badly; momentum and game completely turned there.

I was right about the W boys (Wheeler & Wusu) having nice games but more importantly wrong about the outcome. Expect it may be a long, disappointing season at this point.

You can't win when:

1. Your star player shoots 5-19 from the floor and 0-8 from the 3 point line
2. Your opponent takes almost twice as many free throws as you and they outscore you at the line by 18. Providence shot 26-30 and we were 8-17

While I really like CMA, I have often been critical of his substitution patterns and today was no exception. How do you let Soriano, who is foul prone, stay on the floor to pick up his third foul in the first half. Then, how do you let Soriano start the second half to pick up his fourth foul seconds into the second half. Wheeler, who played his best half as a Johnnie, should have gotten the start in the second half. He played a terrific game.

Couldn’t stop Watson and couldn’t  rebound the ball in the second half.  We will continue to struggle against the top teams in the league.  I still have us pegged for five or six wins in conference.  Perhaps if Champagnie gets hot, we win one or two more than that.  Wusu is clearly our third best player and that speaks volumes.

Refs get a game ball.

We had many foolish fouls away from the basket. Two of Soriano’s fouls were foolish. So, while the refs seemed to favor Providence with the calls we didn’t do ourselves any favors. Our main reason for losing was our star player not showing up.

Now we get UConn away with them coming off a loss. Get ready for another beat down.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Undisciplined basketball from the gang that can’t shoot straight. Poor defense. No rebounding. This was a perfect example that pressure on defense shouldn’t be confused with good defense. We committed a ton of fouls and Providence was 26/30. Of course, our gang of gunners shot 8/17 from the same line. That’s pathetic.

SJU also took 20 more shots than Providence. Yet lost by 10!?

Another long season coming up.

With our upcoming schedule, wed be lucky to go 2-5 in our next 7.

Agreed Duke, best case scenario, we go 7-13 in conference.

Been saying it since the start of the season, our front line is really weak and will have a really difficult time against most Big East front lines. Once Soriano went out, Watson went off. Maybe he goes off anyway in the 2nd half, but at least Soriano makes him work a little harder. Anyhow that's just one of the reason we lost, the biggest being Champ's off game. Kudos to Wheeler for playing a great game and helping us stay close. Hope we see more of that, we'll need it.

Hate losing this game! I cannot stand Ed Cooley! First off always whining and complaining. Can he please wear a hat maybe a fedora! If I had no legs I’m not wearing shorts! The team plays sloppy that hasn’t changed. If Champ and Posh have bad games we have no shot. Aaron Wheeler finally looked like Div. 1 ball player today.  I guess it’s on to play the clowns from Storrs.

Refs were bad but not the reason we lost.
Lack of fundamentals, missed defensive assignments, blocking out, etc…
Offensively relying on hero ball, not Champs fault, off games happen. More of a reflection of the playbook.

To our credit, we held off Watson without Soriano in the first half.   Anderson gambled and lost on keeping him on the floor in the first half.   You know if he didn't pick up his 3rd early, PC would have pounded the ball inside to Watson until he did.   The 4th foul was a crap call by the refs, inconsequential contact away from the ball 11 seconds into the second half.

Our guys scrapped like hell, and if Champ would have played 10 minutes of Champ ball at the end, we would have hung in.   Posh was relectless on D, Wheeler gets an "A" for his game, and Wusu got a sloppy 20.    The fouls disparity was ridiculous but with how we were playing, understandable.

Not a bad showing away.  It all depends on how good Providence really is.   If they are a 6th place BE team, then we are in trouble.   I think we can beat them at home, PC just isn't that good.
