This was my first time seeing Stanley play, so I don't have a lot to go on here. But he certainly seems like someone with the potential to be a fan favorite. Appears to be fearless with an endless motor. He might never be the most skilled player on the court, but he certainly appears like he will be able to contribute.
Agree on the motor and it was only the first time I really saw him but I thought he had a nice touch. He had a shot called off for traveling that he hit that I thought wow that’s a freshman. That being said I probably just jinxed him

Stanley in his first game hit a couple of midrange jumpers that I haven’t seen a sju player hit in a very long time.  That will only get better as will the other stuff.  Huge hands and really
good athlete with great motor.

Curious for the recruiting gurus where was Stanley ranked last year ? I have no recollection

Trying to decide if Stanley's build, motor and style of pley reminds me more of Sean Evans or Justin Brownlee. I would be thrilled if he gave us Brownlee production.

Not sure, but thinking somewhere in the 300 range. What I am sure of is that there are members of our fanbase who, based on yesterday, have already proclaimed him "highly underrated!"

Or Josh Roberts who had a similar game in his first CMA coached game versus Mercer?

Josh Roberts looked like a deer in the headlights for over a year.  Very different player.

Baruch vs Mississippi Valley State.

I'd take Baruch.

I just don't think there is anything you can take away from this game.

We have great shooters! Real competition is going to have bigger and faster athletes closing out.

Finally, we can bang inside! Real competition is going to have real big men and guards that can rebound better than MVS's frontline.

Finally, we're sharing the ball. Real competition is going to play some defense.

This time last year, we thought Vince Cole was going to be a stud when he was 5-6 from three including the game-winner against St. Peter's.

I'm optimistic about this season. I think we're deeper and more balanced. But our competition has been pitiful so far. Nothing to take away just yet.

Guilty as charged on Cole. I won't make that mistake again. Reality is, we have 2 players on our roster who have proven to be high level Big East Players, Champ and Posh.  We have 3 other players who have proven to be Big East level contributors, Wusu, Mathis and Wheeler. Wusu has far more room for improvement(from last season) then both Mathis and Wheeler do IMO, but Wheeler and Mathis will contribute. Every single other player on this roster still needs to prove that he can contribute somewhat significantly at this level.  If history has taught us anything, it's that some of the players will prove they can, and some will prove they can't.  We will know soon enough who can and who can't.
Monte, you don't see Soriano as a BE-level player?
Ken I'm not saying that he's not a big east level player, and I did like a lot of things about him, especially his touch. I'm just saying that I'm not passing judgement on any of the kids who have not already played at this level based on 1 scrimmage and 2 games against D3 level teams. I actually need to see them play against Big East level talent before deciding. We'll know a lot more in the next month, that's for sure.
True, but you have to admit the A-10 has some pretty teams.
I'll admit that as long as you admit that Toro put up decent numbers in the A-10 as well /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png
Low blow, Monte. Low blow.

Here's two not quite facts (but NCJohnnie predictions) about rankings and CMA - both Wusu and Stanley were somewhere below 200 in the high school rankings but both will have outstanding Division 1 basketball careers for CMA. Of course this is from the same guy who told you Cole would be a good 2 year player for us, so take it for it is not worth lol.

Stanley seems far ahead of where Sean Evans was as a freshman.  I think Evans played more football than basketball in high school, and it took him a few seasons to acclimate.  How Stanley does against high major competition is an unknown, but what is known is that he will play with a high level of energy.  Which means running the floor and getting hustle points and rebounds.  No one likes to play against guys like Stanley and Posh. That's good for us, and bad for the other guy.

Any chance that Wheeler offense boosted by playing opposite JC which forces defenses to cover both baseline corners and opens driving lanes?

From my limited observation of him, his skill set appears to be the same as O'Mar Stanley's - be active, get rebounds and putbacks, run the floor for some easy dunks, maybe hit a short jumper if it's there.  In Anderson's system he should be a useful defender and I suspect contribute something like 8 and 5 per 40 minutes.

I generally agree with Monte (although not quite as salty about it) that Wheeler has a limited amount of upside left - I think Anderson will get more out of him than Purdue did by virtue of system fit, but I'm not sure how much more his skill set can be developed.

I think the opposite about Stanley - he has lots of room to add to his already valuable skill set, looking forward to watching him do that the next few years.

1. "I generally agree with Monte". If that's a blanket statement, I'm highly flattered. If it's specific to Wheeler, well, I'll take what i can get.
2. You're confusing "salty" with "assured"
