(POST GAME) Mississippi Valley St., Tue., Nov. 9, 7:45p, FS-1

It was great to see players in person, as you can tell much more by putting an eye on them than on television.  While it may be too early to give some definitive assessments of players, I was definitely pleasantly pleased by what I saw from the newcomers.  I think this is a legitimate 11 player deep team; no wonder Traore is being redshirted.

I saw attendance reported as 4,749.  It didn’t look that full from what I could tell.  Anyone attending provide some confirmation?

Took care of business in a big way last night. Lots of positives to take away from the game, but don't want to get too carried away. I mean, while everyone's stats last night were pretty damn good,  I could go for a triple double against MVS. Having said that, very encouraged by the play of Stanley, Coburn, Mathis and Smith. Not as encouraged from what I saw of Wheeler and Nyiwe, but in fairness, have no real expectations for Nyiwe and limited expectations for Wheeler. Expecting him to give us maybe slightly more than he gave Purdue. As for Soriano, really need to see him play against better comp before deciding how I feel about him. For sure he's a big upgrade over Toro(not hard to do), but let's not get carried away by his production against a far inferior opponent. What he did last night was similar to what he did at Fordham. Let's see how he fairs against Indy, Kansas and Big East Comp. Hopefully he can hold his own but a double-double won't be a common occurrence. Still, if he can give us 7-7 I'll ge happy. Pinzon has length and skills, but tempering my expectations off the bat. There will be a learning curve for him, and he'll need to add some muscle IMO. As JF and others have said, we'll also need to see how he fairs on D against far more talented and quicker guards.

As for the returning players, not much to say other then Champ and Posh are studs! And Wusu is a man amongst boys out there, even out of shape. Not at all concerned about what we'll get from those three when they're on the court.

All in all, hard not to be really encouraged overall by what we saw last night. On to St. Peter's!

It is probably based on tickets sold because, many people who had the handwritten thank you notes on their seats from student athletes did not all show up.  But the crowd was larger than I expected and the giveaway of a quality hoodie was a nice touch.  A good time was had by all.

No groundbreaking observations to make - MVSU was terrible so there isn't much to take away from a game standpoint.  From an observational standpoint of our team, Coach has a LOT of pieces to work with.

In the backcourt, Posh and Mathis are going to be brutal to try to bring the ball up against.  Stef Smith is a veteran.  Coburn can shoot.  You almost forget about Wusu.  Pinzon looks like he will be a player but he is a freshman and deferred far too much last night.

Up front Soriano will fill the gaping hole we have had in the middle, he will be able to at least compete against legit bigs.  Wheeler and Stanley have length and activity - I assume eventually they will end up being out on the point of the press and that is going to make opponents' lives miserable. I'm not going to say I told you so about Stanley, but I told you so - that kid is the sort of player you need on a winning team.

Nyiwe was intriguing in the little I saw of him.  He clearly has some physical tools and showed almost shockingly good court awareness and passing skills for a big man.  Will be interesting to see if the staff can develop him - there is potentially a lot to work with there.

Get another tune-up on Saturday and then let's see what happens at Indiana.  But this is going to be one hell of a fun team to watch.

One other thing I want to add, and I know it's been mentioned before; it's so great to see the kids stay disciplined and work on fundamentals,  even when they have a huge lead. At a certain point early in the game, it was obvious this was going to be a blow out. Yet the kids stayed focused and didn't turn the game in to a street ball exhibition, as we saw sometimes in early season blow outs with the Lavin teams, and always with the Mullin teams. It used to infuriate the hell out of me because you just knew those habits would carry over to the later games, and they always did. Well coached teams stay disciplined regardless of the score. This is an extremely well coached, mature(even the freshmen) and heady team.

It was pretty full besides maybe a few rows in the upper level. Good student turn out.

We've certainly had much worse attendance.

I share in lawmanfan's assessment and observations, particularly these concerning Nyiwe about his good court awareness.

From day one, I have loved the exciting brand of ball that Anderson teams play.  Last night we saw a complement of players that can facilitate that style where substitues don't lessen it but with fresh legs that can continue the energy.
I loved Posh's 7 assists in only 20 minutes; he is going to keep his teammates awake.  Amazing that we led the game for 39:55; guess it took 5 seconds for tip off and Posh's layup.

1. First and foremost it was just great to be back in the arena, watching a game that counts, with other fans. Speaking to a few other friends and fans a lot of people were just grateful to be in attendance.

2. It starts with Julian. 20 points, effortless. There is something different about his game that I've seen and mentioned from the Baruch exhibition and it was on display last night also. He is gliding. It looks like it's coming very easy to him, there's no laboring in moving and scoring basically at will. He's finding the open lanes on cuts, his two transition 3's in the 2nd half were pure, it's just a joy to watch. In 20 minutes he went 8-14 from the floor, 2-5 from long range. It was a ho hum night in the office.

3. Posh looked confident shooting the 3. It's going to be a big factor this season as many have echoed. He plays hard even in a game vs. Mississippi Valley State. It was interesting to see him play off the ball for a stretch with Pinzon in. And more so the starting lineup featuring Stef, Montez and Posh in what you can argue is a "small ball" lineup. Posh when 6-7 from the field, 4-5 from 3, dished out 7 assists, had 3 steals only turned the ball over 3 times and added a block for good measure. That's a delicious game no matter who you play in only 20 minutes of action.

4. Joel Soriano and Tareq Coburn could very well be the reasons this team is being talked about in mid March. Yes Soriano is big, yes we haven't had a center like him in arguably 30 years, but it can't be overstated enough how much he changes the dynamic of EVERYTHING on the floor on EACH play. The rebounds, the second chances, the way he will draw fouls, the fact that he can actually hit free throws. It adds an element that this team has simply not had, lacked, and fans have been BEGGING for...for years. Now with boy genius Coburn...this kid is a PLAYER. 5-8 from the floor, 3-5 from downtown...more so he plays strong defense took two hard charges in the second half. He's long, he's athletic as all hell and is confident. He's a massive addition and I wouldn't be surprised to see him start eventually.

5. While Aaron Wheeler didn't have a huge game, he did a lot of little things well. 6 boards, 4 assists and 6 points. He runs the floor well and spaces it out. I think his minutes will go up eventually and he'll be a little more assertive on offense. O'mar Stanley is a guy that I bet you'll hear announcers say "any coach would want a guy like him on their team." He's a hustler, can hit the mid range jumper and just does everything that's needed. He's like a big version of Nick Rutherford and Marcellus Earlington fused together. I think Stanley is going to be a big difference maker off the bench during Big East play.

6. Montez and Stef are nice pieces to have. They seemingly fit well with this group and when needed as a second unit with Posh and Julian on the bench which happened yesterday, there's no drop off because they can score and run the floor and offense. Size and experienced, they both feel like guys who can be security blankets for Coach Anderson. Last year there were times when we were screaming at the rotations and lineup combos.

7. I noticed yesterday that the inter-changeable 10-11 guys Mike used were seamless. There wasn't a lull or lack of ball movement or anything like that. Again, competition aside these are the things we have to look for and I'm sure the staff is evaluating in a 58 point blow out. We got 53 points from our bench which is pretty unheard of from prior SJU teams.

8. Esahia Nyiwe was impressive in his time on the court. He can handle the ball, he was cutting and passing well and had a really nice falling away floater. He looks like a contributor and at his size that's just another piece to have in the back pocket. I was "disappointed" (not really it's his first ever game) in Rafael Pinzon in the sense that it seemed like he looked apprehensive with the ball in his hands and looked to be a little bit like a deer in headlights. I'm sure that'll change with time, his size is apparent and he's another ball handler on the floor which really gives us 3 which is nice to have.

9. As a team we shot 69% from the field, 52% (!!!!) from 3 point land, and went 16-20 from the line...that's just great efficient ball against anyone you play, and it's obviously a formula for success.

10. Can't ask for much more than what we got yesterday. Turnovers were the biggest issue, definitely don't like having 20, but a lot were off of tipped passes going out of bounds and it didn't feel like we ever shot ourselves in the foot. A tougher test will be presented on Saturday afternoon but St. Peter's doesn't have much depth and I expect a strong showing. Soriano and Wheeler and Stanley will have a tougher test with Ndefo but it'll be a better litmus test.

Good Win, Good Start, Lots to like. Lets get win #2.

Watched most of it on the stream Really wouldn’t take too much away. St. John’s is in another stratosphere of talent to MV State. The depth we have is nice to have. Maybe that’s the takeaway. For years we have had to worry about getting picked off by some of the less talented matchups. Not saying they can’t lose but one off night from say Champ. should not result in disaster.

Anyone else feel old seeing that Lindsey Hunter is the Head Coach at MV State? Wow.

I liked what I saw last night, but it’s the beginning of the season.  Let’s see how the team comes together.
I want to see more pressure defense and some zone for possible use when appropriate.

The 2 things that really stand out about Big Joel is his interior passing.  I have seen it a few times last night and against Baruch when he gets doubled down low, he can dump it off to a teammate for an easy bucket.

I am also impressed with his soft touch from the free throw line.  Lots of times guys with his build cant shoot free throws to save their life.  Very impressive.

Baruch vs Mississippi Valley State.

I'd take Baruch.

I just don't think there is anything you can take away from this game.

We have great shooters! Real competition is going to have bigger and faster athletes closing out.

Finally, we can bang inside! Real competition is going to have real big men and guards that can rebound better than MVS's frontline.

Finally, we're sharing the ball. Real competition is going to play some defense.

This time last year, we thought Vince Cole was going to be a stud when he was 5-6 from three including the game-winner against St. Peter's.

I'm optimistic about this season. I think we're deeper and more balanced. But our competition has been pitiful so far. Nothing to take away just yet.

I'd say it was a good 4,000+.  Quite a few headed out early.

Well said.  When he gets pressured wi to doubles in the post, he has great ability to see open cutters and dump the ball and pass out of it.  He’s also an excellent. Rebounder position-wise.  Will be a big addition for us. Teams will have to try to stop him from having big games inside  of left unchecked.

I know the competition wasn’t very good, but a double-double in 17 minutes of play is still very impressive.
