Baruch vs Mississippi Valley State.

I'd take Baruch.

I just don't think there is anything you can take away from this game.

We have great shooters! Real competition is going to have bigger and faster athletes closing out.

Finally, we can bang inside! Real competition is going to have real big men and guards that can rebound better than MVS's frontline.

Finally, we're sharing the ball. Real competition is going to play some defense.

This time last year, we thought Vince Cole was going to be a stud when he was 5-6 from three including the game-winner against St. Peter's.

I'm optimistic about this season. I think we're deeper and more balanced. But our competition has been pitiful so far. Nothing to take away just yet.

Thank you for bringing up your Cole point. Nick Rutherford’s line in his first game was also close to spectacular.

ONE NICE THING ABOUT HIGHLIGHTS=YOU KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE THEIR THREES...CAN MSVS BEAT BARUCH?

Not a great D1 team but far better than Baruch IMO.  They had actual D1 size and some athleticism.  Baruch essentially a walk-on team.

Guilty as charged on Cole. I won't make that mistake again. Reality is, we have 2 players on our roster who have proven to be high level Big East Players, Champ and Posh.  We have 3 other players who have proven to be Big East level contributors, Wusu, Mathis and Wheeler. Wusu has far more room for improvement(from last season) then both Mathis and Wheeler do IMO, but Wheeler and Mathis will contribute. Every single other player on this roster still needs to prove that he can contribute somewhat significantly at this level.  If history has taught us anything, it's that some of the players will prove they can, and some will prove they can't.  We will know soon enough who can and who can't.

I’m very guilty on Cole too probably even more than Monte and I still like Cole but way too much early can be overstated on cream puffs. St Peter’s will be good barometer Indy and especially Kansas we will get much better early gauge. That being said after the game Monte Wendell Weathermannyc abd I zoomed and Monte and I had a lot of the same first impressions. Coburn and Stanley really stood out to me for the new comers

To me it was quite obvious from the first game that Cole would struggle against better competition.

I agree it was tough to analyze anything yesterday based on the competition.  I have some questions about Wheeler based on a limited sample, but hopefully he plays well.

Ken I'm not saying that he's not a big east level player, and I did like a lot of things about him, especially his touch. I'm just saying that I'm not passing judgement on any of the kids who have not already played at this level based on 1 scrimmage and 2 games against D3 level teams. I actually need to see them play against Big East level talent before deciding. We'll know a lot more in the next month, that's for sure.

Early on, Mathis has been super-solid.  Nothing like the loose-cannon many expected coming in.  I still think Wheeler is trapped as a kid that plays like a SF in a PF/C’s body. He has a lot of talent and just needs to find his file.  He will be a big contributor.

At the risk of being called a Dick again(it wasn't the first time and it sure as hell won't be the last), I think you're overestimating just a tad bit, the kind of contribution we'll get from Wheeler. Yes, a change of scenery and new system can often bring about better results in a player, but Matt Painter is a pretty damn good coach and I'm sure he tried different things to maximize Wheeler's size, athleticism and natural abilities. Now, his length should be very helpful on D, just not expecting much more statistically then what he did at Purdue. Anyhow, hope you're right and I'm not.

If the college sports world goes back to normal, Pinzon and Stanley will have really good careers here. Players with Stanley's athleticism and energy are hard to find. He is going to be very good and can already contribute. Pinzon looks like he will be given the backup PG role. He is a pass first guard with excellent court vision. We didn't get to see a lot of Tim Doyle, but from what I remember, Pinzon and Doyle have similar games. Find the open man. Except Pinzon looks to be more capable of getting to the rim and scoring. His release looked nice on the 3 he hit. This team is much better than last season. Considering our finish last season, anything less than 4th or better and dancing will be a letdown.

True, but you have to admit the A-10 has some pretty teams.

I'll admit that as long as you admit that Toro put up decent numbers in the A-10 as well /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

This was my first time seeing Stanley play, so I don't have a lot to go on here. But he certainly seems like someone with the potential to be a fan favorite. Appears to be fearless with an endless motor. He might never be the most skilled player on the court, but he certainly appears like he will be able to contribute.

Agree on the motor and it was only the first time I really saw him but I thought he had a nice touch. He had a shot called off for traveling that he hit that I thought wow that’s a freshman. That being said I probably just jinxed him

I watched most of the Baruch exhibition and the game last night and read almost everyone's posts. I am cautiously optimistic about this team. If you have been a St. John's fan the last twenty plus years you need to see results. Here are my thoughts on the players so far.

Champs - He sees the game at such a high level. I really believe he will find a role in the NBA. He seems like a player that Popovich would have loved when the Spurs were an elite team. I hope he isn't too unselfish.
Posh - not just a great defender. A great player. Get ready Gillespie he is coming for you.
Wusu - only played a little but was very disruptive on the defensive end. Hope he lets the game come to him. He will continue to get better.
Smith - watched him a number of times at Vermont and he is a real solid player. He will compete just fine in the Big East. Knows his role and most times will execute it.
Mathis - Hadn't seen much of him at Rutgers. I like his game and effort. Fits our system and seems really happy to be here. Hope he doesn't try to do too much.
Soriano - remember seeing him play against Cockburn in high school. He never backed down even though he was overpowered at times. That's why I think he will hold his own most off the time. Anything he gives us is an improvement over last year. I think he will be ok.
Wheeler - Will be more effective in the press. Has to find his role on offense. Not quite sure what his game is but he is 6'9 and has some talent.
Coburn - I just love this kid and I can't believe how lucky we are to have picked him up. He is a great shooter and surprisingly athletic. He is a high motor confident player. Playing at St. John's seems to be his dream and he will give everything he has to help the team win.
Stanley -  Plays very hard and is happy doing the dirty work. He is a Freshman so he may struggle at times but will always give max effort.
Pinzon  - He is a smart player and understands the game. I am not sure how many minutes he will get as I think many of the other guards are more experienced but I feel comfortable putting him in when we need a ball handler.
Nyiwe - I am not sure how much he will play but is tall and somewhat athletic so I think he may have a few games where he will surprise. If he sticks around has upside. I am glad we have him.

While I am upbeat about most of our players they have to come together as a team and be consistent. Winning in Indiana isn't going to be easy. We will know a lot more after the next two games.

Most, if not all that can be said has been said…I saw what I had either expected or hoped for from most players and came away very happy and encouraged.

I liked what I saw from the wildcard 1st year players including Stanley, Pinzon and Nwiye

Stanley, as advertised, has non-stop motor.

In Pinzon, I see a kid who will develop very nicely - especially once he gets a little experience. He may never be fleet of foot and may be challenged defensively - but I see a lot of potential. Collin Gillespie was a little known, 3 star recruit for Nova who still cant guard anyone and he developed well.

A number of things stood out for me with respect to Nwiye. He made at least 2-3 very nice passes, looked athletic on a couple of moves to the basket, and walled up nicely on a drive on which many bigs would have been hell bent to get a block.

It’s early, so still wait and see but a lot to be optimistic about.
