(POST GAME) Mississippi Valley St., Tue., Nov. 9, 7:45p, FS-1

Fun game I'm not going to take too much from it other than some nice outside shooting and fun seeing the new guys. Saturday competition gets a lot better I'll see what we have then

Most important are that we played with great effort and efficiently on offense.  Ball movement was excellent as was rebounding.  Soriano had a double-double and Stanley was excellent as well.  More impressed with Nywie than I thought I’d be.  He did a lot out there.  He was only credited with one rebound but I’m certain he had more.

Backcourt additions were poised and excellent.  We go real deep with talent.  I wanna see us against better teams.  Need a great effort against St. Peter’s to get ready for Indiana on the road.  Our inside/outside game is a revelation and will be a huge difference maker this season.

Great game.  Fun way to start the season.  If Posh and Coburn can shoot like this during the year, this is a dangerous basketball team.

Yes, Saturday will be a big step up in competition.  St.Peter's is picked to finish 2nd in the MAAC this year and in their game tonight they only lost by 3 points to VCU, which is typically a really good mid-major team, they won 19 games last year.

With that said if the same team that played tonight shows up Saturday should be a 15-20 point win.

I know the competition was what it was but fun to have a low pressure blowout to see all the new guys for the first time. Coburn and Smith look especially impressive. Really nice to have some beef and toughness down low too. Will be nice to not feel like we're getting bullied down there for once. If Posh and Champagnie do what we think they're capable of it could be a really interesting season. Great to have college basketball back

Very weak opposition but SJU shot 80 per cent from two point range, 32 for 40, and that must be a CA record.

Agree with MJ, just a fun game to watch and not worth drawing any conclusions.

For me, the pleasant surprises were Stanley and Posh's shooting.

I did see a potential limitation for Pinzon.  Although he can play both guard positions offensively, he may have trouble defending quicker guards.  It's a small sample, but something to keep an eye on.

Fox Sports botched opening night.
I guess I'm in the minority here, I thought the wrap around coverage was pretty cool.  I have double monitors set up in my office,  I went to foxsports.com and streamed St. John's on my 1st computer screen, went to espn.com and streamed Arkansas game on my 2nd computer screen, and had the wrap around coverage on my TV, so I was able to see a little bit of all of the other Big East games.  Gave me a march madness feel on opening night.

Were you guys having problems with the foxsports website/app or something?

Yes. Fun game to see all the new players.

surprised at how many at the game tonight; thought it woulD be empty
drove home a lot easier than the drive  there

Agree we can not take to much from this game. But think this team has potential

Soriano 11pts, 13 rebs and 7/8 from the line. I’d venture to guess he played maybe 20 minutes.  That’s a huge takeaway right there regardless of competition.

Skill sets are there . Shooters, Rebounders,Passers, cutters. They played like a team. That is all you can ask for .
A little sloppy ball handling. Hope it does translate into a great season . But one thing is plainly obvious ;
We have not had skilled players like this in years!!! They will be competitive early and often and when they absorb the Anderson 40 minutes of hell they might become great. Again , this opportunity is exciting!

I guess you can "takeaway" from this and the Baruch games is they need to tighten up their turnovers.  Given it's eleven guys out there who haven't played together in anger much so far...  I guess a shorter bench and familiarity with each other will solve this problem.

Another "takeaway"...every player looks big time.  I'm confident we can do big things in March (maybe looking too far ahead?)..

One thing I did like about this game, is that we came out and buried them early.  16-3 lead at the first media timeout.

Too often in the past, we've given teams like this confidence by not burying them early, and we've let them stick around for awhile, even if it's only in for a half, or so.

Tonight, we delivered the really early KO.
