(POST-GAME) @Marquette, Tues. Feb. 5, 8pm, FS1 / 570AM
Last observation from me on the game...

I thought Keita played well and we needed it. If there is one thing he does as well or better than the average big man starter it’s defendig guards on the switch. He gives up the low % pull-up but gets in a deep stance to challenge the drive—which he can usually defend well and get a good chance at blocking if beaten. That seems to alter the shots of the guards and make them hesitant to do it again. It’d be nice if he starred to rebound better.
Really agree with this. And this came along quickly, as this was a big issue when he first returned from injury so may have just been getting comfortable again post-injury. First GTown game was almost lost in large part because they were able to switch Keita onto Akinjo so frequently in second half.

Last night was totally different and you are absolutely right, even on a make he forced Howard into some very difficult perimeter shots and challenged at rim. Big part of why our switch everything which was hurting us for a few weeks was really effective last night.

Missed first game in ages last night as I am caring for my invalid dad in the hospital but was uplifted by the win. The team is in good shape with family running the show. Mrs. 72 loves the Mullin family and in the end I support her.
On to a Providence win.

As I watch the team play this year , it seems that each game there is some little thing that a player might do that sticks out in my mind . Usually it is something that will not show up in the game stats but was important for the team . An example of this would be L J hitting an offensive rebound out to teammates on the perimiter . for a restart or a shot .. Anyone have other examples of this type of play ?

It happened last night and at least 2 other times this year. Williams got his shot altered at the rim and then on the same possession was able to convert a basket in close amongst traffic. Took composure and confidence and I can’t wait to see what he does game after game.

Best wishes with taking care of your dad, 72. Most "older" posters like us have either had to deal with similar matters in the past, or as in your case, are currently dealing with them. I think I can speak for all of us when I say our thoughts and prayers are with you and your dad.

LJ keeping the ball in bounds against SH, before the refs robbed us!

Watching the last few minutes, twice, I was surprised the refs didn't call a bogus hook or push off on Ponds as his defender fell to the ground. Didn't think Marquette defended it well at all. With St. John's you would think they would rather ABP (anyone but Ponds) take the last shot.

I also thought Howard had a chance to draw a foul on the last few second shot he took when he got Heron in the air. He seemed to avoid the contact, double clutched, and threw up an air ball. Right into one of the Hauser's hands, who could not hold on. That's why you claw till the end. Stay close on the road, (or lose a big lead) and sometimes the ball bounces your way.

I don't think Ponds did anything that even could be remotely called a foul. The defender flopped. Ponds hand made incidental contact with the defender's arm, but that does not cause you to fall to the ground.

Absolutely agree with you on Heron and Howard. As soon as Heron jumped on the pump fake, I thought that Howard would jump into him to get the foul. I'm shocked that he didn't. Heron made the saving play as he stayed in the play and got a hand up when Howard finally elevated to shoot and forced him to double clutch.

Heron gets called often for charging on his drives?Legit calls or not? Seemed like he couldn’t get it going around the basket in second half last night

Fortunately we were in Milwaukee instead of Newark.

On the game thread, I unfairly called out Mean Gene, for impulsive game thread posts. I should not have done that. Apologies to Mean Gene.

Unfortunately, many are guilty of it.

My point is posters should be required to go back and read their emotionally charged game posts after a cooling off period. It may give some perspective on how you cone across to others.

I am not telling anyone to treat game threads like I do, and refrain from posting in them, because we would barely complete a one page thread. And that is boring.

But if all you are going to post is something to the effect of "(insert player's name) is worthless, and he costing us the game. This game is over. See you in the NIT," maybe you should not.

Anyway, lecture over.

We are...
Great post and agree. We are so hard on each other as fans more so than any other team I root for by far, it's a weird dynamic. IMO emotional posts and hot takes are more entertaining than simply stating the obvious e.g. "we are not shooting well" but I need to improve as well. Of course we will be emotional with such wild games down to the last second, but I know we all mean well and we all want nothing more than to see this team succeed. We are brothers that fight but at the end of the day we need to stick together and unite for this program.
Hey Mike are you sure you didn't write Trumps State of the Union speech last night?

How about his offensive rebound over the backs of two Marquette guards thus keeping our possession at the end of the game.

You mean right before Justin hit an offensive rebound out to teammates on the perimeter for a restart?

Figgy is the type of player I would have hated to play against in a pick up game. You could never relax with him lurking around, looking for a steal or an offensive rebound.

Huge play! If he sticks around (and I'm not suggesting he won't) and keeps it up, LJ is going to be on my list of all-time favorite Johnnies. He's been an absolute God-send -- as has been Heron. Dare we even think where we'd be without either one of them?

At this stage of his career he sometimes is a 1/2 step slow and is not able to turn the corner. Additionally, his dribble needs to be tighter to his body when he penetrates. He needs to work on this in practice and over the next year. In the meantime he needs to read the play when he is unable to turn the corner and execute a pull up jump shot. He is strong enough and athletic enough to accomplish this.

Absolutely great win last night on so many levels. Have not seen much mention of the poor outing by Clarke. He has to be one of the dumbest defensive players we have seen. He has to find a way to avoid the stupid fouls to stay on the court. It's essential to our success going forward. We dodged a bullet last night with some really putrid BE officiating.

Read Marquette boards and it's funny...one guy posted that the refs were letting them play until late in the game when they called everything. Umm, no...they called everything on us and only started to balance things out in the last 7 min or so! Early on it was a 16 vs. 9 foul call differential. Many of their fans were shocked they didn't attack inside more especially being in double bonus. Puzzling to me as well...the way to beat us is pretty clear. Double Ponds, take the ball out of his hands like Duke did, and bang inside.

Much easier said then done re: how to stop Ponds.
