(POST GAME) Georgetown, Sun., Jan. 16, 4:30p, FOX

A crowd of five thousand at MSG doesn’t produce an exciting atmosphere but considering the match up of mediocre teams, COVID still running rampant and the NFL playing playoff football it wasn’t that bad.
SJU should avoid playing games at MSG on NFL playoff days.
I don't know if there's many other days where The Garden can have us.

In this particular case, a smaller crowd may have helped us.  Had Ewing been on the sidelines, a lot of Knicks fans might have shown up to support, and a total crowd of 7 or 8 thousand might have been more pro-Georgetown.

Also, this probably didn't tilt the scales too much, but when it was announced as a 4:30 start, instead of noon, I thought it might help the attendance.  But the playoff games starting at 1, combined with the fact that the nasty weather was supposed to come in around 6:00 (which it did), probably would have made a noon start more fortuitous.

Also, 21-29 from the foul line, which is 72.4%, and 2 of those misses were by Wusu in the final minute, long after the outcome had been decided.

Also a 29-18 advantage in free throws attempted, which was a welcome change from recent games.

Lastly, a plus-11 turnover difference (21-10).  That's key for us.  I'd rather have a game where we turn it over 12 or 13 times, compared to 20 for our opponent, then a game where both teams are in the 8-10 range.

This was not a game to be ecstatic about.  We had to beat Georgetown today to avoid a deep hole and our guys took care of business.  Now the real work begins over the next 4 games.

It will be a tall order to win 2 of the 4.  The home game against SHU is very important, almost huge if we don't beat creighton this week.

Wheeler hit the floor on 2 consecutive plays to go after loose balls.   in those moments with Georgetown bearing down they were big plays.

We have to realize Wheeler is a 3, and plays like a 3.  He can put the ball on the floor, make threes, and is active around the rim.  However if you expect him to get 6 rebounds you will be disappointed.  I said this before this littke run of games - he is more skilled than any forward we lost.   He won't average 10 ppg but he does a lot of nice things and is a player.

Stanley getting a chance to get major minutes as a little big man.    CMA is coaxing productivity out of him.

wusu minus correctable mistakes is one heck of a player.    Just ask georgetown.

Good game.  We are getting better.  We are fortunate to have had canceled games.  This team may be ready to hit Broadway.  I've been stubborn.  Im sticking with 10 or 11 conference wins with 9 the low water mark.

Crowd was spread out across the arena.   It didn't feel like 5k

Agree with 90% of your post Beast especially the point that doesn’t appear in the box score as to how Wheeler got down on the floor twice during those two important sequences which really helped stopped the Hoyas late run.
I really appreciate his effort yesterday on defence.
however, we don’t need him at the 3 at all. We need him to use his skill set at the 4 , which he can do if he commits himself to playing as a 4. We don’t need him hoisting 3 s from a distance but rather getting 6 boards a game. That magical number which you have selected is key to our teams improvement, or should I say vital. One thing I noticed from being able to watch my first SJU game of the season is that he does not go up with 2 hands for boards and instead tips a lot of balls near the hoop especially defensively. However, everything i have mentionnéd is correctable and hopefully Wheeler starts to do these things sooner than later. We are getting all that we can from the majority of the team but in order to improve Wheeler has to start doing a few things which are not skill related but rather mental. I truly hope it occurs.

You may be right but the faith I have in CMA and staff is that they are utilizing him in a way that maximizing his effectiveness. Unlike Tariq Owens, Wheeler has a legitimate 3 point shot, and can also take it hard to the hoop. I just don't see him making a living 10 feet and in from the basket. He can take it there, just not live there. I just hope he can keep up this level of play

nice comments from Coach on Wheeler and Posh

On Aaron Wheeler scoring in double figures in three straight games…
I haven’t even been thinking about his scoring. I’ve been thinking about his energy, his effort on defense, rebounding the basketball [and] being a hard matchup. I think his confidence is soaring right now.”

On Posh Alexander’s well-rounded performance…
“The numbers are kind of staggering. He’s like the Energizer Bunny. Everybody feeds off of him. He was everywhere ... I’m amazed looking at what kind of deflections he had. There were a lot times he touched a basketball. I thought he started with the defensive side of it. He’s playing with a lot of confidence. He’s doing a lot of things for our basketball team. It was a perfect game. He’s very talented, and we’re blessed to have him on our team.”

RMN, I've felt all year that Wheeler has the skills and athleticism to be a real contributor on our team. Having said that I have also noticed his tendency to tip rebounds rather than grab them which I think goes a long way towards explaining his subpar rebounding numbers. Like you I hope he corrects that because if he does he will really help us down low where we need it. Also agree with LFM that he should limit his threes to when he has had a chance to get his feet set. Given that Nyiwe is not Big East ready and Soriano will often be in foul trouble, Wheeler will inevitably have to play some 5 (where he doesn't belong) along with the 4 for us this year.

SJU has not won a road game since 2/6 of last year against Providence.  That's a long time.

Creighton is good but young. Need to start a run

Stanley will get a major opportunity to log minutes at center. Wheeler will only be in that role when opponents go small.

To piggy back on that, yesterdays victory at MSG was our first win away from Carnesecca Arena since  the very same game at Providence. Ouch.

Agree on Stanley, Beast. But by way of example, in yesterday's game Soriano played 10 minutes, Stanley 18 & Nyiwe 3 a total of 31 minutes which left Wheeler playing 9 minutes at center. Hopefully we don't have too many games where Soriano plays less than 15 or 20 minutes.

I kind of wish Soriano was a freshman.  He's definitely a plodder, and he plays defense too much with his hands instead of his feet, which means he gets beat a lot and commits a lot of senseless fouls.   He also needs to learn to face the basket, instead of that one post up move he has.   I've been down on him as a major contributor because of these factors, but he definitely has the bulk and height to give us as many minutes as foul trouble will provide.  However, big skilled centers like Watson will kill him, fouls or not.   Nyiwe is just too raw to be more than a spot player at this point.  So that leaves Stanley as a kid with a higher upside than those first two and who may be the best bet to defend against a stronger, skilled center.

Soriano needs to stop switching on the perimeter and needs to avoid reach in fouls. The lion share of college bigs DO NOT have back to basket skills especially if they receive the ball 5+ feet from the basket. There is no need to reach in if they receive it. The chance of a high % shot with back to basket is low, so just body up and let them take those type of shots. And, if the opposing player is either off balance or falling away from or sideways relative to the basket, let them shoot. If they make it, tip your hat.

Despite his size limitations, I am more confident in Stanley’s ability to contribute on the defensive end than either of the other bigs and, frankly, most of the team. Kid plays the angles well, has good instincts and good hands. And, occasionally, he shows some decent moves on the offensive side. Looking forward to seeing his development. I think there is good upside here.

Before we speculate about our Winning 9 , 10 or 11 games , let’s come back to reality with it being a Win against G’Town . Probably the worst team in the BE .                                                             It’s easy to say we did a lot of good things yesterday and we did . But , let’s see that again vs Creighton , SH , Providence and Nova, etc .     If you noticed , Wusu spent much of the first half , essentially being the PG . Handling the ball into front court and making those bull rushes to the hoop . Early on, with his turnovers, I was thinking here we go again .  But , later on in the 1/2 and in the second half Posh had the Ball mostly and look what happened !      A near Career game for him !   And , Wusu is a much better player when he gets the Ball from other players and not when he tries to create for himself . He shoots better fro m outside when he has his feet set . And , drives better from inside the Wing than from outside . .   We desperately need a quality Road Win soon . And , the opportunity to get quality Wins is this week .

soriano has plenty of eligibility left — two years after this.

It helps when the other team cant play defense and stinks
