I feel the full court pressing has been effective enough. A major problem has been that too many times after creating a turnover that should lead to an easy basket we have thrown the ball away almost immediately. Most of the time with no pressure. You can't press and do that.
Overall the team is awful with the ball. Posh has a lot of talent but he is a freshman, and Cole is a bad ballhandler. When teams have pressed SJU back it has been hard to watch. It's league play now and tape is accumulating, so that is concerning. Dunn will help.
For me, the half court trapping is what is killing the team. For every steal it has led to way too many wide open threes. It's this part of the defensive philosophy that I am wary of working. I just think the amount of good three point shooters makes it ineffective as anything other than something to be used here and there, out of a timeout, etc.
I agree with the first two paragraphs. The most consistent thing about the team has been that it plays stupid basketball (or careless if you prefer) in situations when it doesn't need to force things. And I am not as high on Posh as others - he does some good things, but his handle and decision-making and defense other than the steals are not impressive, at least not yet. I am happier with Dunn or even McGriff in the game, but clearly CMA plans to build around Posh so we are taking our lumps for now.
As I posted elsewhere the pressure D is a risk/reward approach. I think that once it is dialed in AND the players learn how to change gears behind it then we will be just fine. But time will tell on that, you might be right. If it turns out that Coach is a one-trick pony and that trick doesn't work anymore, that would be a problem.
