Greg Williams reminding me more and more of Paris Horne.
Nice pick up. Can become a real solid player given his body and athletic ability.

I was watching SportsNite last night. They showed the highlights of the game, then had Tarik Turner on - the host said something like “It’s a good thing this is over the phone, because you’re supposed to be impartial, but I know you’re beaming with pride and we don’t want our viewers to see it.”. Tarik started out straight, then he said “St. John’s is 2-1 in the BE, although they’re really 3-0.” He then started talking up Shamorie and they cut to a commercial in mid sentence - unbelievable! During the most relevant NY sports story yesterday.

That was the most fun I have had watching SJU in a long time. My wife even said it's been a long time since she heard me yelling at the t.v. like I could influence the game. Our defense still needs tweaking but the looked better than earlier in the year. I can't remember as athletic a team as this one.

I go back to the days of Sleepy Floyd and games at the G-Town on campus facility where we'd drive down to watch in that horrid, over-heated facility. Some were very sweet wins. I'll always remember one at the Capital Center in January of '85 where Mullin dropped about 35-36 points on them in the SJU win (my oldest was born the day before). This one is almost as memorable. Very, very pleasing victory. Ponds is really something special.

I must be the worst fan on this board. Right down to the wire I didn't think we'd win. I even left the room a couple of times to avoid seeing the final outcome. Thanks team for another signature win.

I get the fact that Simon is a very Valuable Player for us but, him havi ng the Ball in a opponents must foul situation isn’t good tactics . He shoots a little over 60 percent and like yesterday , his 2 misses could have iced the game but, allowed GTown to get back in it . Ponds missed a couple also but, he shot his usual 80 percent or so . After Ponds , I would want Clark on the line but, he had already fouled out , I believe . Heron next , then Figgy and last Simon would be the best FT shooters with games on the line . I think we know to accept that Simon will never be a great shooter , despite all the Coaching of Mullin and Richmond . It’s not in his DNA . We can live with it

I was at the fanduel Sportsbook in jersey yesterday watching this game amoung many others. The guy right next to my table was a big St. John’s fan as well who had St. John’s -3 for the game. The amount of f bombs coming from his mouth and loud in this public place (many ppl do yell and throw a few curses around here as they are gambling) was amazing. From we f’ing suck to praising the same players he just trash talked is both sad and funny at the same time. So you are not the only one newsman for sure!!!

I've been saying that for a while as well. The scary part of it is that Paris had a real disconnect in his skills--that is handling the ball. There is no telling how dominant he could have been if he had the handle of a typical combo guard. Williams has that handle. He can connect the athleticism and shooting. I think he can run some point next year.

I've never been won over so quickly by a player. The two things that got me where actually not great plays. The first was him getting sucked way too far down near the basket on help. Typical rookie move, but his recovery was ridiculous and he made up 15 feet to close out on the shooter. At that point, I immediately stopped giving Dixon the benefit of the doubt. The second was a missed three in secondary transition. He got the pass on the move, took a dribble, set his feet and squared himself to the basket and let off a good shot with no hesitation whatsoever...and it wasn't rushed. One more thing that got me was how genuinely supportive he was to Trimble, who was playing over him, at the end of the SH game.

What freshman comes in to a close road game after averaging a handful of minutes and does these things? First touch and he takes the ball baseline for dunks in 3 games? Pulls threes without any hesitation and without rushing?

He looks like a sponge to me...soaking in everything from Ponds and Heron. That baseline dunk is a Heron staple.

He should not be in the game 90 seconds and in. He's missed two free throws several times late. Defenses cannot wait to foul him. He freezes up. I'd substitute Trimble who can go up and get clutch rebounds in traffic and who can shoot well without turning it over.

Simon had 3 huge offensive rebounds yesterday. There is no reason he can't do that every game. He's just not needed on the perimeter when Ponds is playing.

I hear/see what you are saying but I have higher hopes for him than Paris Horne. I don't think Horne ever reached his full potential. More athlete than player. I think with some work Williams can be a really good player. Just IMO.

Hey, I had to pop a Xanax with about 5 minutes to go in regulation. If not, I might've had a heart attack by the time OT began.

Remember Greg played at lower tier, small prep school, scoring primarily around the basket & is facing a huge increase in competition. That said, he is really playing well & once he improves his perimeter shooting, watch out.

He’s a four year keeper for sure. He also will be a solid defender imo. Lastly, he comes from a great, supportive family and has outstanding character.

Paultz, I remember a great story (I think you posted it) about Williams' fathers influence. That was a great story. He is also stronger than what you would expect from a freshman. Still room to develop. I think you hit the bottom line, he needs to work on his stroke. He works hard enough, he'll get it and he will be a really good one. Who better to learn from than Chris and Mitch.

I think you are way too hard on yourself. It was a roller coaster game that we really never had control of. Given last year's heartbreaking overtime loss at Georgetown (our thirteenth consecutive loss to them on the road), feeling like we were going to lose was understandable. Add in the facts that just one week ago we had certain victory wrongfully snatched away from us at Seton Hall and that we lost eleven straight conference games last season (many of which were very close winnable games) and having an optimistic point of view is not really sustained by logic.

That all said, this team has exhibited a refuse to lose persona which is very inspiring. This season when we seem headed to defeat someone makes a key steal. hits a big three or ups the defensive intensity to turn defeat into victory. The games against Georgetown, Cal, VCU, Georgia Tech and Bowling Green all could have gone the wrong direction without winning end games. This team continues to grow and deliver. Ponds, Figueroa, Clark, Simon and Heron are all a big part of developing the culture of winning. Perhaps if they do it often enough the normal expectations will become, "That no matter what we will find a way to win!"

Close to the end we had like a 99% chance of losing. I thought it was over at a few points. Figueroa made two ridiculous steals. Credit to Ponds as well to jar the last one lose that stole a nearly certain win from Gtown. I think Figueroa will keep up these last minute defensive heroics the rest of his career. His arms are so long and his anticipation is absurd...opponents tend to freeze up and short arm passes in big spots and he (and Simon) is not the guy to do that around.

It might be beneficial for Mullin to let the officials know before each game about Figgy's defensive prowess at the end of games. Show the deflection and save at SH, the deflection and save at GTown, the steal to tie against Gtown and whatever else he adds to his resume. That's what tablets are for :)

I did the same thing Newsman. I go crazy with these games. Great win on the road! Let’s get Nova on Tuesday and we will set up nice to win this league.

Love his involvement with his son and the sju program and his banter with fans. I’m looking forward to rooting for Williams as he grows into a key contibuter for us.

A possession or two before that, he holds the ball too long causing a shot clock violation. Ponds has to have the ball in his hands. We stole this game but I hope we learn moving forward
The Hoyas were overplaying Ponds to try and keep the ball out of his hands. It obviously wasn’t what Mullin designed. Sometimes you have to give credit to the opponent for trying to win too.
True but Simon is the worst FT shooter on the team, besides Keita. Fine to give it to him in space in those late game situations but he's got to pass out of pressure and not hold on to it during must foul situations. He's got to understand his limitations.
