(POST GAME) Fordham, Sun., Dec. 5, 7p, FS-1

The subject of this thread is the Fordham game.  Please take the personal stuff to PMs.
Thanks.

The difference between Mathis and the rest of the transfers is he plays defense.  The others play at it.  And I'm not on the Nywie bandwagon based on one good game, but he showed flashes.

Speaking of defense or lack of same, can anyone point me to a site that includes plus/minus. I checked basketball reference and didn’t see it there. At the last three games I tried to do it in my head for Soriano, a player who so far seems to be a huge George Harrison (All Things Must Pass) fan. The numbers I have are ugly but they are super suspect because of the source. Would love to verify.

This might not be a popular opinion, but I still have hope that Coburn will turn things around — and hope that he has a real opportunity to do so.  I know all of the arguments, e.g., SJU is a big step-up from Hofstra. Still, Champs has noted that he’s the best shooter on the team. He has size.  And, he was the best player on the court for large parts of the game against St. Francis. The problem is that a key component of a shooter’s game is confidence, including confidence to continue shooting when the first few shots don’t go down — that you won’t be yanked for taking those shots.  I really think he could be the scorer and leader that the bench needs.
I think Coburn's main issue is his ball handling.  I dare say it's almost as bad as Vince Cole.  At the high major level if you're ball handling is bad at the guard position it's really hard to create a shot for yourself and scouting report is out on him that he's a shooter, so teams are covering him well and he doesn't have the ability to create space for himself like Champ does when he's covered on the 3 point line.

Hopefully he can figure it out, team really needs his shooting right now.
DELETED DUPLICATE

Don’t know how, but CMA absolutely has to figure out how to get him untracked. Opponents routinely destroy us with guys just like him with limited ball handling skills but excellent shooting form.
He has a skill we can use and as a result represents a big upside for the team.

Although CMA has been limiting his PT lately, CMA’s body language when talking to him or inserting him into a game seems to be encouraging and supportive. Assume he knows what Coburn has to offer and wants to get it out of him.

May have to do something like play him with the 1st stringers to get him going

Fair to say jury out until Nyiwe does it on consistent basis and against stiffer combination.

However, he has been demonstrating good qualities even during his limited stints prior to this most recent game. Watching him from the stands, you can see him direct traffic, doubles smartly with the ability to switch or hedge, knows when to go for a block vs. wall up and passes well.

Not saying he is or will be a world beater but the thought that he doesn’t have a high BBall IQ is not correct in my opinion.

Remains to be seen what he develops into, but I am hopeful that he can fill a role. Just have to fill him up on the Qdobas and make him a bit meaner.
