(POST GAME) @Creighton, Wed., Jan. 19, 7p, FS-1

I guess I am the only one who was not shocked by the result.  I figured that we would get killed on the defensive glass (which is not rocket science, since we are about the worst defensive rebounding team in the country), but that we would do well enough in the turnover-differential department to offset those lost possessions.  Setting aside the impact of game flow, that pretty much happened.

I expected that if turnover differential and rebounding offset or close to it, then the game would come down to offensive efficiency.  I expected Creighton to go for about 90 points, which they did.  If we had played some defense after the first possession, we could probably have held them under 80, but Anderson's pressure defense does tend to struggle against disciplined teams that move the ball and shoot the 3 which is the definition of Creighton.  So their scoring was not a huge surprise to me.

The problem as many have identified is that we were not offensively efficient.  Champ was 1-10 before he got garbage-time points, and it is not that he didn't have looks. We needed a couple of 3s from Posh and didn't get them.  Mathis is an excellent defender but brings very little on offense.  Wheeler was the only bright spot.

To some extent it's one game on the road in a tough place to play, but the team has been offensively challenged all year.  The only evident answers are to play Wheeler more and to try to get more out of Smith and Coburn who are superior offensively to Mathis.  Let's see what Coach does.

Needless to say I am not in "burn it all down" mode over one game.  It was a terrible game, just as Nova got whacked the same way in Omaha.  It would be nice to get a road win against a good team, and they really do need to do that sooner or later, but this wasn't that game.  It was just one of those nights.  On to the home-and-home with the Hall, in which coming away with one win IS essential.

It will never happen under CMA.  His requirement in recruits are be super athletic and play great D.  And those kids cant shoot.

If they are super athletic, can play great D and shoot, they r not going to st johns.  They are going to kansas or duke.

CMA needs to back off on the athletic and defensive attributes and get some kids who can shoot even though their d might not be up to his standards.

The player you're asking CMA to get is already on the roster, his name is Tareq Coburn. Have you watched him play this year?

Nary a mention of wusu’s 8 assists even with the offensive struggles from this team. He has his hands on so much of the good things we see. We’d be lost on offense without his emergence. 10,8,7 and doesn’t get mentioned as having even a decent game. Expectations are a killer.

I would just say that when your team gets smacked hard, it's very difficult to pick out rays of sunshine, and statistics can be deceiving in the final result.

Nothing good to say about this except at least we got sports investing going on which has been a winning proposition overall so far.

I agree mostly. But 8,5,3 in the first half when it was still at least a game. Saw some mentions of wheeler being the only guy that played ok.

I’m also not gonna point out the countless negatives that occurred last night for the next 3 days.

That would only work for us if we played intra -squad games where he was left open long enough to tie Chris Mullin's shoes.

He did bring in Champ and Posh, so give him some credit there.  And I think Stanley and Pinzon are going to develop into productive players.

While the rebounding edge and no answer for O'Connell (who might be emerging before our eyes) might have still done us in, we simply missed too many easy putbacks at inopportune times that would have cut the lead and perhaps swung some momentum.  Plus, those misses did not allow us to set our defense, which did pose some problems early on for Creighton.  Again, a loss there is not unexpected.  How our offense utterly failed us made the loss worse than it should have been.

Right, no reason Mrs. Lincoln should not have enjoyed the play. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

O'Connell had a career night.   We probably should have put someone in his shorts when he started nailing shots.

This game doesn't require a lot of analysis - WE SUCKED!!!!
All we can do is hope that we'll be better against Seton Hall

This was just a terrible showing. The two league losses were to two good teams on their home court and Creighton is a team SJU could be fighting for a post season bid. A chance to go over 500 vs a team that is no more talented and to lay an egg and not even compete is just frustrating.
Rebounding is so much effort and none of that was there. This team might win at Georgetown but they won’t win another away game. The players and the coach just don’t have what it takes. Prior to last night I thought Anderson was safe for this year and next but now I could see Cragg getting pressured to make a move after this season.

A fan/ Alumni for over 40 years that was one of the worst performances I’ve seen
