Best thing you can say is that it only counts for one loss. UCONN was a W that slipped out of our hands.

We are just 2-3 in conference which makes Saturday at home vs. SHU critical to win, considering what follows.

Critical for what? Keeping CMA's streak alive? That's about the only thing we're playing for at this point.

Seems like Wheeler has earned a starting role; time for Mathis to come off the bench.

very different positions.

Trust me I agree with you, but when you think of what Mathis brings offensively in the half court, does he really have a position? Only one of those guys needs to be guarded right now and it’s not Mathis. IMO wheeler is more 3 than 5.

Who was calling the game yesterday? The way they were hyping our players, you'd think we were a national title contender and up 30 points, not down 30 points to a good(not great) Creighton team. Sounded like some of our posters early in the season.
As for the debate about who should start and who should come off the bench, it really doesn't matter. At the end of the day, we got Champ and Posh, and a bunch of role players. Just stick with whoever is playing the best in any particular game,
regardless of who starts or doesn't.

One of the most embarrassing efforts and demoralizing losses from start to finish in recent memory. It's like the team showed up totally unprepared and that's on CMA.

Barring a drastic turn of events, it's gotten to the point where we have to realize this is just not a good team. Too many players are giving us close to nothing, including most of the transfers.

This season has become extremely ponderous to the point we may as well merge post game threads with the one questioning if CMA is the right coach.

I hate to go down that change the coach road, but this team is a dog chasing its tail.

I am embarrassed to admit that I was (consistent with my general tendency to opt for optimism with respect to the team)jaded and fooled by the very early season success against inferior opponents. I truly believed at that time that the talent level was better and that there were guys who would fill roles we had not had in the past. Along with the 2 all conference guys, I felt we could compete for the conference championship. I was dead wrong, unfortunately.

As the drum beat for a coaching change grows, I am not yet ready to go there, as I believe that while the product on the court is not better, the structure of the program and its stability is better. I think a little more time is needed to see if the staff can bring in the level of talent that is needed to compete in the BE. The commitment by Storr was a sign that that can happen. If we can retain Wusu and Posh and a few others like Wheeler, Pinzon and several others, and add another few good players, then next year could show progress, despite the loss of Julian. I emphasize COULD. Next year will tell a lot, to me at least.

As a 45+ year fan, the continued struggles are very disappointing and tiring. But, I can't yet blame the staff and Coach particularly for this. The program was allowed to devolve for several decades, and it will take more than a band-aid to fix it for good. But, progress (more than seen to date) MUST be shown. Soon.

My analysis from November remains unchanged.

We are giving up way too many offensive rebounds (2nd chance shots) and way too many wide open threes.  Our team is just not good enough to compensate for that.

I mean....Creighton had almost 20 more rebounds than us (50-31).

Give St. John's some credit......they were able to turned Kalbrenner into Kevin Garnett and O'Connell into Ray Allen.

This team is dog not chasing anything, it just lays on the porch!!!!

Enjoyed your review of the game. Personally ,feel coach failed getting the players  needed to help a weak team. We needed shooters and a big  that were productive . As I said , if this is the best recruiting that our coach and staff can do than we will continue to be near the bottom of the BE  This is yr 3 need some accountability   Honey moon for this staff is over

After years of watching every game I could, this team has finally broke me. It's certainly not the worst team of my years as a fan but I don't have the drive to watch them. During the Gtown game, a friend texted me to talk about it and I truthfully replied that I was watching the football game. I think the aggravation of being a Giants/Knicks fan over the last decade has led to too much frustration. I can't handle a 3rd team driving me nuts. I think I have to either accept that we are destined for mediocrity or just stop caring at all

I get that Wheeler & Mathis play different positions. Also get that we were outscored by 18 points from three and outrebounded 50-31. Something is broke and needs fixing and I am not ready to say the team/coaching are lost and can't be fixed. The message coach sent to Wheeler by sitting him for a couple of games clearly worked as he is tied with Wusu for 4th in league in 3 point shooting and scored 16 last night with 6 rebounds, 2 blocks & 3 assists on 7-10 shooting; he was both a presence underneath and a threat from three both of which we need more of. We have been playing a 3 guard offense with 2 of those 3 shooting under 25% from three and it's not working. Especially against Hall who start two guys who are 6'10" and 7'2" makes perfect sense to go with more traditional lineup and start Champ at the three matched against Rhoden. That is Champ's stated preference and he needs to show he can guard wings like Rhoden if he wants to play in the league. Maybe Wheeler will not be able to keep up his recent level of play but seems to me he deserves a start and change makes sense against Seton Hall starting five imho.

The strategy was to turn up the pressure on their freshman point guard… we stretched the press with Wheeler trapping and it caused a couple of turnovers but good teams figure it out and they preceded to beat us down the floor and have open looks the rest of the game. We would have been much better off playing half court in your face defense as we were the quicker team.

Our rebounding woes are to some extent caused by how much we overplay on defense ( we have great steal #’s) and no one is boxing out. At 62 (63?) MA is not going to change his coaching philosophy. We either buy in or accept our mistake and make yet another head coaching change.

Wheeler has now played well for 4 games.   I fear that as a starter he may get overexposed, but also feel that right now he is certainly one of our best 5 players.

Would be nice to find a guy like O’Connell to shoot the three!
It will never happen under CMA.  His requirement in recruits are be super athletic and play great D.  And those kids cant shoot.

If they are super athletic, can play great D and shoot, they r not going to st johns.  They are going to kansas or duke.

CMA needs to back off on the athletic and defensive attributes and get some kids who can shoot even though their d might not be up to his standards.

Tough game to watch.  Effort was terrible.  I don’t understand how these kids think they’re going to make the NCAA tournament when they don’t put in the effort to defend or rebound.  They can’t keep their man in front of them and leave guys wide open from 3.  Defensive rotations suck.  They played defense as if they haven’t practiced all year.  I don’t know how they can watch film and not see their lack of effort/execution on defense and boxing out.  Teams constantly go over the back on our rebounders and don’t foul because we never put a body on them to box out.  Either box out or hit the bench.  It should be muscle memory from practice. We got blown out because the defense and rebounding was terrible, not because Julian had a terrible game.  That was one of the worst shooting teams in the Big East.  I also don’t understand why it’s a given that Julian goes pro.  Unfortunately it feels like there are too many times in games where it feels like he disappears when he should take charge.  A lot of the things he had to work on are still problems for him.  He can be a great shooter if he has a good look at the basket,  but that’s the problem he can’t gain separation from his defender.  I appreciate the player he is for us, but if you’re looking at it from a scouts perspective for the NBA he has trouble creating space for his shot because he can’t put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim.  He doesn’t have versatility in his scoring.  He should post up smaller defenders.  He should be able to use pump fakes to draw fouls or cut to the basket when they’re playing him tight. The opposition knows his handle is not good enough to drive past them and he only puts the ball on the floor to set up his step back jumper so they play up on him and dare him to put the ball on the floor. Defenders in the NBA are bigger, stronger, and faster. That kid O’Connell would get destroyed by a pro, not shut down. Julian’s an excellent college player, but has a lot of deficiencies to work on when it comes to the Pro game.  I feel like Posh needs to look for his shot more often. He’s capable of drawing fouls and forcing the defense to collapse on his drives to the basket.  Sometimes it feels like guys like Wusu and Mathis dominate the ball more than Posh and Champ.  Mathis gets way more touches and shots than he should.  I had hope for Soriano but he doesn’t box out and is too slow to switch and keep up with anyone other than a center.  Just a poor defender, as is Smith.  This team just feels like it needs better athletes to play Anderson’s defense.  Some of them just don’t feel like the right fit for his team which is what happens when you desperately need to recruit a bunch of transfers to field  a team.   Lavin’s teams would have been a great fit under Anderson.  He needs that level of talent, length and athletes to win.

O’connell is a 5Th year senior with a career 3pt% of 36%. After going 6/9 yesterday he is shooting worse from 3 than 3 of our players.

He scored easily against us because we leave everyone free since we are running around trying to defend Rather we should just play lock down 1/2court defense. CM s system is great if 4 put  of 5 players are good shooters
