(POST-GAME) Creighton, Wed. Jan. 16, 6:30p, FS-1 / 970AM

Remind me again why we should bail out that wretched program? Let them continue to fall into obscurity. Could not have happened to a better program.

That crap conference may get 5 bids like the Big East[/quote

I would not bet on 5 bids for the BE.
Cincinnati and Houston for sure. No one else is guaranteed.
Marquette and Villanova for sure. No one else is guaranteed.
Top to bottom Big East is stronger.
I prefer to enjoy each game, take it one game at a time, and see where we land. If we are good enough, we are in, if not has been a great season so far.

No they won't. If the AAC really gets 5 bids, then why would every school in that conference jump at joining the BE?

Yes, team can drive us crazy sometimes, but must say they have quickest hands I have seen collectively. Pickpockets! So many deflections & steals clearly rattled Creighton tonight. Fun win!

We had 2 stupid fouls all game, Clark on the 3 and Ponds on the Technical. Otherwise we had very active hands and active feet. Hard for this type of team to play effective zone really has to be worked on. We are more of a pressing team. Rather than playing zone would like us to utilize some half court traps. With our length, speed and instincts this could occasionally rattle/throw the opposition off.

First, I want to thank Knight for providing stats for every game and to welcome him as a mod.
From those stats one would think there was some error in the Marvin Clark numbers. Normally we would lose with that type of production but Marvin made up that oddity with 12 rebounds. Hope this is the last game where Keita takes more shots than Marvin and they reverse roles. Hopeful that Keita starts preferring defense and rebounding to outside shooting.
Our other 4 guys in the gang of 5 were terrific in the 2nd half. Still hopeful Trimble and Wright start contributing on offense.

Clark only took a few shots but rebounded great and played nice d. Nice W. Need to get some offensive production from the bench.Only scored 2 points. Nice 2 nd half by Heron. If he can step up, we could be dangerous,

Nice bounce back win
Team looked smooth and in control and played with lots of energy and passion
Love the scoring balance - 4 guys between 16 and 22 points each
We played like we did during the non league portion of our schedule
Congrats, guys, for a strong effort!!
WE ARE............ST JOHN'S!!

Just got back from the Arena and it was a terrific team win. The starting five all played very well.

First and foremost it was great to have Ponds back. He is such a versatile player and makes everyone around him better. When we were down 28 to 19 in the first half he ignited an 18 to 3 run that happened in under four minutes and totally turned the game around.

L.J. Figueroa had a monster game. He had 16 points and 13 rebounds and brought unbelievable energy to the floor. During one pivotal 28 second interval in the second half he had three huge offensive rebounds, two athletic layups and a spectacular block. This unbelievable run of plays put the crowd into a frenzy and stuck a dagger in any hope that Creighton had of a comeback. He is a very unselfish player, is a very difficult match up for his opposition and seems to raise his game when the team goes into a lull. Every time I see him play I need to pinch myself that we got a player who is this good that came to us so under the radar.

Mustapha Heron played his best half of basketball in a St. John's uniform during the second half. Hampered by foul trouble early and held scoreless for the first 24 plus minutes of the game, he exploded for 18 points in under fifteen minutes in the second half. He was dominant posting up and was very under control throughout. Additionally he was very efficient offensively and was a force on the defensive end of the floor. Lastly after two early fouls he played smart and never committed another foul the rest of the way.

Justin Simon often gets overlooked for what he does but really never should be. He is a critical component to our success. He again locked down defensively on the opposition's best player and held Ty-Shon Alexander to 4 of 13 shooting and only ten points (well below his 17.4 PPG average). He is our best shutdown defender. Additionally he was able to put up 16 points with six rebounds and four steals. He is a team first guy and a pleasure to watch play.

Marvin Clark had a game where he did the little things very well and took only three shots making two. He had a strong game on the boards grabbing ten rebounds, defended at a high level and did not turn the ball over once. He clearly is a player that his teammates respect and you can see that other players on the team look to him for leadership.

There is so much to enjoy with these five. While the team's depth is obviously not a strength, this starting five is as good a group as we have had in a long time.

I think it's odd that McDermott doesn't play Alexander on guys like Ponds and Howard. I realize that Mintz asked to become the defensive stopper but Alexander is an NBA athlete who is capable of shutting down anyone physically.

I found Alexander to be weirdly aloof for someone as good as he is. I just assumed he'd be a star this season based on what I saw out of him last year.

The play that really tells you about Figgy happened late in the game. SJU scores, Ponds steals the inbounds, but the camera shows Figgy wide open begging for the ball. Instead, Ponds hoists up an ill advised 3. Instead of pouting, Figgy breaks to the basket, gets the offensive rebound, and puts it back for the score.

Figueroa just has a monster basketball IQ. You can see him clapping for Simon to get him the ball when he's open...almost angrily motioning to demand ally-oops. He just sees it so much earlier...like Ponds.

I think we've only seen a fraction of his offensive rebounding potential.

Thanks for these Knight, particularly Mike Vaccaro’s piece, luv the guy.
Caught the end of an FS1 spin about whether St. John’s is better than a 9 seed.
Conclusion was yeah, maybe.
The next 5 games are key but St. John’s is a good team with upside.
If we beat Duke and Nova again...”wow.”
Mentioned Shamorie, of course, but also Clark, Simon, and Figgy.
And here we go...

Sounds like a lot of positives came out of the game. Most importantly from a moderator perspective it means the board will be a bit more jovial until the next loss :)

Young players should just watch tape of how he gets ready to catch the ball. Hands out, legs bent, and always ready to make a play.
