[quote="Paultzman" post=409424]Ewing has no luck it seems

Georgetown guard Jalen Harris taking leave of absence for family reasons. I believe Jalen missed the game last week , when we played them . But , the other Harris kid , the freshman torched us for 22 points I think . Ewing , despite bjs Team’s results , seems able to get top notch guards like MCClung , Akingo and now , this kid Harris . Akingo and McClung left , but they are high quality players .

Absolutely NO REASON this team can’t defend at a high level. The effort has been embarrassing. Even if you think the talent isn’t at BE level, most are athletic enough to compete defensively. Last year team gave up 90+ once, this year 3x already (BC Hoyas Creighton).

Disagree. Currently no one on roster with the size and strength and skill to move around opposing bigs when they go through the low post and who can also go up strong with an offensive rebound and at least force the opposing big to foul.

Opposing bigs don’t shoot 57% from 3.

Other than Mamu, generally true. But when you can't man up in the post and you have to defend opposing bigs by collapsing into the paint, it makes open 3s for other players. It's all connected.

Team defense is also all connected, and in addition to Fuschia's point, I think the fact that the team just hasn't had enough time playing together is a significant element here. No argument that the D has been atrocious all year, though

AD best be on the phone trying to schedule some additional local non-conference games to give Coach Anderson a lift.

Oh I’m sure the AD is burning up the phones trying to schedule any local team that is ranked in the 300’s to boost this coaches record.

probably not, but same time can't hurt if that's one of the recruiter talking points. Also helps keep us Top 9 all time wins a big longer before we ultimately move out of Top 10. We need whatever we can get (safely).

JMHO-Mike Anderson is a good solid coach. The "never having a losing season" to me is a meh stat. A bit misleading. There are a lot of mediocre 16-16, 17-15 type seasons in that streak where he has less than 20 wins combined with double digit loss seasons.

In other words it is nice feather but to me it is not something I think about as a major reason why he is a good coach.

Would we improve recruiting if we jettisoned an assistant?

Maybe although the staff is not bad. Not sure who he could hire if he were to replace anyone..He doesn't have deep roots here.

I think the biggest issue that will be with him until he wins consistently here is fit. Not everyone fits at a school no matter how good coach you think he maybe is. Is he the right fit at SJU? That is what Goodman was getting at when he was surprised that SJU hired him. SJU fans attacked Jeff but he wasn't suggesting Mike was necessarily a bad coach but not quite sure if a guy who spent his entire coaching career in the South was the best "fit" for a job in the BE let alone NYC.

I mean say what you want about his baggage and there is baggage but no one would worry about Pitino being a fit at SJU. New Yorker, coached in BE at Providence, footprints all over the Northeast. Same thing with Danny Hurley if they hired Danny back in 2015 instead of Mullin. Born and raised in Jersey, coached in Northeast at Wagner and Rhode Island etc.

I don't want to get off track because I don't want to come across as knocking a good man and a good coach. Plus it is early. But if there is a question it is about fit.

I'm sure the same was said about Jim Valvano when he was hired at N.C. State. That was a mismatch if ever i saw one. Of course Jimmy V. was the anomaly. But it can happen and I'm sure there are plenty more. Like every coach in a major conference, survival ultimately depends on the ability to recruit. It is hard to win with a team of 3* players in a 4* league.
