(POST GAME) @Connecticut, Wed., Jan. 12, 8:30p, FS-1

Didn't stay up to watch the game and feel fortunate I didn't. Probably would have had a hard time sleeping after this tough loss. Just looking at the box score, 26 fouls vs 13 for UConn? That's ridiculous

Not worth rehashing what went wrong or right because anything less than a W at this point isn't enough. We're now halfway through the year with 0 Q1 wins and a NET over 100. We're in bad, bad shape and aren't even on track for the NIT. Need to go on a streak to keep this season alive.

Wusu is a nice player and I like him but don’t love the offense primarily going through him with Posh off the ball.
Would like them to at least try to establish Soriano down low more, he does have soft touch and is 1 of only 2 guys  I trust at the line. That is of course if the refs actually called fouls on our opponents.
I also at times like the Soriano, Wheeler, Champagnie front line.
Would also dust Coburn off and give him some of Mathis / Smith minutes as they simply can’t shoot.

I am going to take the positive spin on this loss.  For the first time this year I think the team maybe ready to live up to at least some of the pre-season hype.

Of course if they go out and lose to Georgetown I will flip that in two seconds but I think they win that game and go on a little run here.

Still see an offense that lacks some scoring punch on the perimeter but I saw some toughness and a "don't back down" mentality last night that I really liked.  Shame they did not hold on but I am more optimistic this morning then I was 24 hours ago.

We will beat georgetown but they stink.  What makes you think that we are going to go into Creighton and win that game?  Until this team shows me that they can beat a good team, I fully expect to lose in omaha.

Duke,
I said before the UCONN game that I thought we had a better chance of beating Creighton so as close as we came last night against a team I thought was a bad matchup, I'm encouraged. This Creighton team does not shoot the three as well as past Creighton teams, (30%) and they are not particularly quick. I think it is our best chance of a road win against the likes of Nova, Xavier & Hall. But we need to shoot it better; more Smith, less Mathis.

I don't usually question CMA's decision making, but wouldn't Soriano have a better chance of keeping Sanogo off the offensive glass?

This was exactly my observation when watching the game - as soon as U Conn got the ball in the front court off of the tipped full-court pass that went out of bounds I said "gotta put Soriano in now to keep Sanogo out of the box."  He didn't and that decision is very possibly the one that sent the game to OT and an eventual loss.

This game was a microcosm of the pluses and minuses Anderson brings to the table.  The team played tough on the road against a good opponent.  There's no quit in them and they just keep competing until the final bell.  He is willing to be patient with players and give them opportunities to learn and grow, for which he is often rewarded in the end (Wheeler is coming along nicely, but letting Wusu play through a tough game didn't work out quite as well this time).  The defense is coming together and the pace can be a problem for many opponents.

But on the flip side you have to live with suboptimal tactical decisions in big spots, including player usage and play design.  That just isn't his strong suit and you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

On balance I still think it will be a good enough structure to consistently get the team to the middle of the pack in the Big East, and maybe better if we attract some high-level talent.  But it comes as a complete package, the good with the bad.

Last observation is that I have now seen enough to know that I don't mind Wheeler shooting when his feet are set, and I never want to see him shoot when they aren't.

The refs were atrocious! They called every tick tack foul against us and nothing against UCONN, even when they mugged us. I think Higgins trained this crew!

BE Refs are the worst I have seen this season . And, while they didn’t lose the game last night , they contributed mightily to it !   They called Posh a lot for pushing off or charging when he went to the hoop , yet let Cole get away with the same thing all night . He pushes off every time with his right hand .                                                             And , how do they have the balls to call Wheeler for a foul on the last play in regulation ? Sanago was clearly over Wheeler’s back .  And , BB Officiating 101 says don’t let the Whistle decide a last second game . They did ! On a questionable call .  Does anybody know the names of that Ref Crew ? How many games have they done on us ?

The answer to your question is Breeding, who is the worst ref in all of sports.  He's notoriously atrocious.

Bottom line, box out and grab a defensive rebound, we win. End of story.

Partially technique, partially that Sinogo is a beast outweighing Wheeler by 50 pounds.   It's also situational.  Wheeler's only job wasn't to box Sinogo, but to keep him from getting an entry pass.   That being said as soon as the shot was released had to put a body on Sinogo to keep him further from the basket.    Much easier said than done, IMO.

They were equally bad .  And , did anyone notice Hurley talks to the Refs at every stoppage in Play .   It’s not a good image when you already have  home court advantage .  What are they talking about ?  The best spots to eat on the Jersey Shore ?   Didn’t see any shots of Anderson talking to the Refs .  Maybe he did off Camera ?    It won’t happen but , Anderson should start Smith instead of Wusu . I think Wusu is more effective coming off the Bench than starting .     Mathis doesn’t give us much offensively . I must have missed it but , what’s the story with Pinzon ?  Virus complications ?  On this team , he’s sorely missed .

To me what got me optimistic was how the team responded when Coach was telling them in the huddle, "It's a street fight...It's a street fight."

And they treated it like it was and fought back against a really good team on the road.

We drove to the hoop about 20 times it resulted in about 17 blocks and 3 charges with no fouls called . WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talk all you want about our outside shooting woes and mindless drives into traffic, which are legit points, but our post players are soft.  Two straight games we were abused in the paint, whenever we face a BE team with a strong inside game we're going to be in trouble.

Even The Boneyard felt they got a favorable whistle throughout.  https://the-boneyard.com/threads/refs-vs-st-johns.177285/

Respect Wusu’s fearlessness, but his “giveth & taketh” play has been much more detrimental recently. It is clear CMA likes his aggression, but perhaps the team is better served bringing him off bench and also his mega minutes this year don’t seem merited. I think Smith at least offers a better chance to keep teams honest on the perimeter considering Julian is our only threat of the main group. Smith has his warts defensively but you can’t continue to invest so many minutes in a guard trio that really present no shooting threat, 7/30 last night.

Lastly, Posh is a warrior, but I don’t prefer he play off the ball so much and become a “power forward” too often. I think he should be honing his PG skills with penetration and dishing with only occasional ventures down low to steal a rebound or two. Having Dylan handle the ball at top of key so much and putting him in decision making role is  risky. On to a weak GT team that they still need to respect.

I agree. I don’t like our smallest player leading the team in rebounds. I am worried about him though offensively his numbers are down. He’s worse at the line and from the 3 I really thought they would focus his development here making him a better shooter. At least where opposing players can’t say off of him. Also don’t know why teams don’t just play zone against us we can’t shoot if our lives were on the line.
