(POST GAME) @Connecticut, Wed., Jan. 12, 8:30p, FS-1

We are not going to win many big east games playing 3 guards that cant shoot.

Posh is spending most of his time down low rebounding and doing put backs, mathis is terrified to shoot a 3 and with good reason and wusu is a train wreck just putting his head down and driving to the basket getting rejected.

Give me a guard who is hanging around the 3 point line ready to knock down shoots.  And that means playing Smith and Coburn alot more minutes and see what they can do.

The 3 guards who cant shoot experiment isnt working.

I wanted to see enough games before saying anything but Every transfer we got has been just awful. These are suppose to be D1 players but nobody’s can make FTs. Worried about recruiting who would want to join this mess.

Wheeler has played well the last two games

Agreed.  Moving forward, Im starting the following:
1- Posh
2- Smith
3- Champy
4- Wheeler
5- Soriano

No more posh, mathis and wusu out there at the same time.  Thats over with.

I agree with an earlier post that Coburn is likely not playing bc he isn’t able to commit to practicing.  Agree that Smith needs more PT.  But even with some changes to the lineup, I fear that we don’t have the horses or the coaching to be an upper echelon team.  If we won tonight, which we almost did, it would have been an absolute steal.

27-78 from field (34.6%)

Uconn had 15 less attempts and was 47.6%

Blame the refs all you want.  We lost because we can't get ball in basket.

Need different contributors every night.  Tonight wusu didn't have it.  Miss pinzon who I think with regular minutes will help nicely.

I agree.  And when Pinzon gets back, he needs to play major minutes.  At this point, the players who are going to be here next year need to get experience.  This is a lost season anyways.

We fought back against a physical and talented team on their home court. So, kudos to the guys.

Unfortunately, blew a great opportunity…

UCONN caught a break on the long pass down court as it saved them time. I was hoping to see them inbound in backcourt. With one ball handler was hoping we would turn them east-west once or twice.

Phantom call on Wheeler was home cooking

Offensive foul on Posh was correct call but Cole should have been called for the arm bar many times.

A few bone head plays hurt - Wheeler stepping on the line on long inbounds pass…yet again another non text book fast break off a steal resulting in a forced shot.

like others have said, CMA needs to rethink some of these combinations. Mathis is better suited to coming off bench. Limited, to no, offensive skills. No outside nor inside game. Gets no lift off floor and can’t use left hand, resulting in every drive being contested. The shots he makes are usually circus variety. He is a good contributor but we need some floor balance and we’re not getting it.

And he provides some spacing becasue hes knocking down the 3s.  Get Stef Smith in there with him and now it opens the middle for posh to get to the hoop and score.

Posh, Mathis, wusu combo on the floor is killing this team on the offensive end.

All true, but we overcame the poor shooting when Champ hit the 3-pointer with :05 seconds left. Box out and a grab a rebound and we win despite the refs, poor shooting, free throw shooting, etc….

Not pressuring the ball with 4+ seconds left was plain assinine. It allowed the long pass. Then not putting a body on Sanogo? Why not bring in Soriano there? Fouls were 26 -13. That's bullshit. Wusu so out of control. I want to see more of Smith. He can't be a worse defensive player than Mathis or a bonehead player like Wusu. Fought back valiantly only to be done in by the refs and some continuing bonehead play.

Frustrating loss leaves us looking for scapegoats, but guys fought hard against a much bigger and more athletic team. On the road no less. Champ has to go off every game or team will have little chance. Not enough firepower from rest of team. Posh shot poorly but he does so many little things that the box score may not show. Soriano is limited athletically but he gives it his all and really seems like a good teammate, cheering hard from the sidelines. Maybe Wheeler will become the second long range scoring option that everyone thought would be Coburn's role.

One of the reasons they had 15 less shots, was because a lot of our soft fouls were called on their missed shots, which don't count as misses in the box score.

Maybe the game was reffed fairly, but a tight whistle will never be to our benefit, because it almost forces us to play softer on defense.

One of the reasons we played well against Colgate, was because there was only a total of 11 foul shots in the game, so we could take more chances.

It's so easy to be negative but we were a major underdog and damn near won, in fact should have won as the foul on Wheeler that sent game to overtime should have been a no call. We are not a great.shooting team but we fight.like hell and.damn near outrebounded a much bigger team. Wheeler, Smith and Stanley all need to play more. I have not given up on the season, think we win the next two and go from there.

We will beat georgetown but they stink.  What makes you think that we we are going to go into Creighton and win that game?  Until this team shows me that they can beat a good team, I fully expect to lose in omaha.

I'll meet you halfway on this.

Last year, right around this time I think (though we had played more Big East games), we suffered a similar loss to Marquette, where we played very well in making a second half comeback, but they made the last shot, and beat us.  After that, we went 9-3 the rest of the regular season, so we obviously found something in that game.

Maybe we get something similar out of tonight.  I can't say I believe it, because I haven't liked what I've seen, for the most part, but that was the case last year, too.

We can't play Posh, Wusu and Mathis at the same time for extended minutes. There just isn't enough shooting or spacing on the offensive end with those 3 guys on the floor. Although Wusu's 3 point shooting numbers have been decent so far this year, teams are happy to watch him chuck. They also beg Posh and Mathis to launch 3s. With these guys on the floor, opponents can clog the lane and not allow any good looks at the rim, nor do they have to worry about any drive and kicks to anybody other than Julian. Thats why Wusu struggled so much tonight and why we got 26% of our field goal attempts blocked.

Going into the season we had our two defenders/slashers in Wusu + Mathis and then our two shooters in Smith + Coburn. I was thinking they'd mostly be rolling out one in each group at a time to provide a little of both worlds but clearly Coburn is injured and Stef doesn't have the full confidence of CMA.

Bingo Delaware!! As soon as the first timeout ended at the end of the game when we had a 1 point lead with seconds left and Yukon had to go the length of the floor and we had nobody guarding the inbounds pass, I screamed at the TV. Then, there was another timeout and I figured that CMA would change his defensive alignment and fix this. He didn't, much to my chagrin.

We'll never know what might have happened but putting our biggest guy on the inbound passer might have prevented him from throwing a three quarter length pass that got Yukon the ball in the front court with almost all of the remaining time still left on the clock. Dumb move. It could have forced them to throw short, waste time bringing the ball up the court and, hopefully, taking a wild shot at the buzzer. It reminded me of the NCAA final game when Laettner hit the game winner under similar circumstances. Cardinal rule IMO - always put your biggest guy on the inbound passer under these circumstances!!
