(POST GAME) Butler, Fri., Feb. 18, 5p, CBSSN

Soriano continues to play in control. Biggest change in his game is he’s not reaching over guys to block shots/get cheap fouls.  Arms go straight up and he’s changing shots.

How many times did Butler drive and not get a shot off bc Soriano was there?

Hope they work with him after the season. Either send him to a big man camp or bring in someone like former Johnnie, George Johnson, to help him with his footwork in the post. He definitely could be a force and a focal point with a little more finesse/skill.

Dramatic improvement already. He's lost over 30 lbs and is moving much better. He is scoring more points facing the basket, and relying less on the 10 foot baby hook in the post. A voiding silly fouls especially away from hoop is key.
Great passer for a big man finding cutters to the hoop.

Can be a force before he is done here. Way above my initial assessment but tbh he's changed more than I have.

Thought Zendon on our staff now to help out big men.Soriano much improved but needs to be more ready for receiving passes down low. Fumbles too many but great passer and great intuitive blocking ability . Shot improving and dunking much more now than early on. Imposing his will more

Two Questions . First , I have never seen Justin Play , are their games similar ?    Second , would anyone ever know if Justin slipped into the locker room at 1/2 time and took over for Julian? Of course , it’s only a fantasy because Julian doesn’t need to be replaced by anyone .  He’s emerged from a earlier season slump .  In a big way .  Julian seemed to be energized by his Brother’s attendance yesterday . And , Justin was a proud brother throughout the game . It was great to see on TV and probably better at CA .

It's been great at CA all season. Last night was special. Lots of students. Free pizza and sweatshirts for them, and they are no longer there just for free stuff.

New fan base emerging along with the faithful to make these games a lot of fun.

Lots if excitement before during and post game.

Making Plays - I never said those teams were as good as Butler, but on paper they count the same. Creighton will be a great test especially given how our last game with them went.

Beast - huh? Why would you assume I missed the game? I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it. I'm just cautiously optimistic because I know how quickly things can change.

Edit: Beast deleted their post I guess.
Do they count the same?  Because NET jumped up 10 spots to 68 beating Butler.  Any win, especially a home game, that jumps you up 10 spots in NET this late in the season is really good win to be excited about in my book.

I don't think NET would have jumped up 10 spots beating Florida Atlantic by 30 at home.  I believe Butler's metrics of how well that had been playing and St. John's having such good efficiency against them played a big role in such a big jump against a Q3 team at home.  This game also had a big jump in Kenpom, at 64 there right now.

Also, I don't want you to take it the wrong way like I'm starting an argument, I'm just saying that wasn't a small victory to win in that fashion against a team that was trending upwards and just beat a ranked team a few days ago.

I already covered in the NET thread last night about how big of a win this was, not because of how strong Butler is but because of how much we beat them by. I predicted we'd increase by 9 spots and we did so by 10. Butler is still a bottom tier Big East team and this was at home. A lot of things went right for us that hadn't in previous games and pretty much everyone had a solid game. Do I expect that to 100% continue going forward, especially against better competition? Definitely not. Posh will have off nights as he often has. Champ will have off nights as he often has, especially when better teams double team him. Teams will get hot from 3 as they often have. Etc. This was an A+ game from us.

All I was saying is I need to see this performance (or at least anywhere close to it) repeated against better competition. That means hitting our free throws, Champ performing well, defending the 3. hitting our 3s, hitting out layups, etc. One game in isolation doesn't mean much to me. Literally everything went right, including Posh's near half-court buzzer beater. Beat Creighton (regardless of margin) and then I'll start believing. Again, they destroyed us last game so that'd say a lot about whether St. John's has improved.

And to answer your questions about NET... yes. had we beat a team with a similar NET at home it would've jumped us 10 spots in the NET. I'm unsure why you think it wouldn't. This is mid-February, not mid-December. In general teams won't have huge increases or decreases going forward unless they go on big runs. In fact, Butler dropped 13 spots overnight. Butler was ranked #118 last night, so teams just ahead of them were #115 UNI, #116 Middle Tenn, and #117 Seattle U. I don't really care whether Butler is better than those teams or not, that's irrelevant in terms of our resume. Right now they're all a dozen+ spots ahead of Butler in the NET.

So again, yes. In the eyes of the Committee, which is what matters most at this point, beating Butler would absolutely mean the same thing as beating those teams. They are all Q3. Butler isn't getting special treatment because of the conference they're in, and it's very possible they'll continue dropping as they did last night.

Beat Creighton and then I'll start believing. I don't put much stock into one or two games, as great as they were. I also expected to easily win this one (as I said in the pre-game thread). We have a lot of ground to make up and I want to see how this team performs with some increased expectations and competition.

school needs to give the free stuff away in the lobby. was great idea but at halftime that was a mess behind the basket I think they moved it midway through but that narrow walkway isnt the place for anything to have people stop and wait like a herd of cattle :)

I had a friend meet me there who drove in from nyc.  Traffic was really heavy for mid afternoon

Johnnyfan deserves a game ball from travelling from NJ.    Jsj also

Thanks, but I cheated.  Left work at noon and picked my son up from school early.  I figured there can't be much happening on a Friday in 4th grade....right?.  Anyway, we actually got there super early.  It was worth it.

Agree 1000% on the improvement. Now just needs more technique (footwork etc….) to smooth out the rough edges. It’s like my wife (former Broadway dancer) trying to get me to go from free styling to the Lindy without looking at my feet. Lol

It is great to see all those fresh and energized faces at CA. Building momentum with young guys and girls.

Made 68% of our 2s, 50% of our 3s and 90% of our FTs. The shooting numbers from the past 2 games are unsustainable but obviously the team is taking better shots and the offense is flowing way better than it was a month ago. Keep up the energy like this and we might actually see Friday night of the BET for once.

Yep, it's the drum of "offensive efficiency" I've been pounding. Many of the team's metrics have been fine and improving. The real challenge has been to have good offensive possessions and to convert the good looks when they get them. There have been too many games where guys forced shots that weren't good looks, but there have been WAY too many games when even the good looks didn't get converted.

When they are efficient offensively they can play with anyone. But when you're forcing up shots and blowing layups it's ugly.

Also WRT to Soriano, who as many noted played a good game last night, to me the important takeaway was that he took the ball to the rim instead of settling for the hook shot.

Of course, Butler doesn't really have a big to challenge him, but it was still a plus that he recognized or was coached to take advantage of that and did so.

Next step is for him to take that approach against someone his size. It's really hard to draw a foul shooting a hook shot.

Agree that his off season is key, not sure what they can do to improve his handling passes in traffic. Perhaps drills and repetition can help. With Posh really getting good at penetration & dish game Joel can really reap dividends with such improvement. In such a quick paced game, fumbling for even a second can be difference in scoring or not.

With respect to Coburns ejection, don’t think it was entirely his fault. During the Butler foul shot that preceded, the Butler foul shooter shoved Coburn in the back when he jumped to middle of key to block shooter. Led to some words and presumably to the follow up.

not optimal but I like the fight and assertiveness he is showing.

The change in Mathis’s game from a huge offensive liability but a few games ago where he was single handed my shooting us out of the game to a player under great control tonight going 3/3 for 6 points and 4 boards in 22 minutes while playing very good D is just remarkable.
When he and Dylan don’t try to force they are both very good team players.

Yes, I agree.  Getting guys to understand and transition into roles that help the team is clearly one of Anderson's strengths.  Whether it's Mathis, Wheeler, Earlington, Isaiah Moore, Dunn and others.....he takes a non-negotiable approach.  They adjust or they sit.  But, the roles are also apparently being described and taught.  It's fair to say that, in some cases, it has taken too long.  But the impactful adjustments are undeniable and under some coaches the adjustments are never made.
