(POST GAME) Butler, Fri., Feb. 18, 5p, CBSSN

On Coburn;
He struggled tonight and got thrown out of the game for a frustration flagrant 2 foul.  He needs to regroup and come back with a vengence Wed night.  Hes 3 point shooting off the bench is key.

Dont think he deserved a flagrant 2!

The change in Mathis’s game from a huge offensive liability but a few games ago where he was single handed my shooting us out of the game to a player under great control tonight going 3/3 for 6 points and 4 boards in 22 minutes while playing very good D is just remarkable.
When he and Dylan don’t try to force they are both very good team players.

I like that our coach has mixed the defenses the last couple of games.  Zone through them off.

Dont ever underestimate how effective our zone D has been. Also, a thing of beauty offensively one series beating their zone when ultimately I believe Wheeler hit a left corner 3. Proof of very good Coaching AND execution. Have to believe that previous problems were more a function of poor execution.

I don't think it would have been ruled a F2 if the game was closer. It was a 30 point game by that point and the refs wanted to nip any potential nippiness in the bud

Great game. Fun game.  Thats win number 2 in what im thinking is our final 6-0 push.

For a Friday 5pm I wasn’t expecting as big a crowd. Was a pleasant surprise. Wasn’t fun trying to get past the insane guys working the metal detectors after an hour and a half drive but the rest of the game and sitting with my 114 friends made the trip a great night

I had a friend meet me there who drove in from nyc.  Traffic was really heavy for mid afternoon

Johnnyfan deserves a game ball from travelling from NJ.    Jsj also

yes surprised at the very good crowd.       Also gate 3 closed

One thing you did not see much of tonight, especially in the first half, was Wusu and Mathis being on the court together.

As strong as those two are defensively, we are simply too shorthanded offensively when they are both on the court.  Whatever advantages they bring to the defense, is more than negated by their troubles on offense.

Putting one on the court at a time, to be a defensive stopper, is perfectly fine.  Both?  We struggle to score too much, IMO.

Obviously this was a fantastic win, but #131 Butler as we all know isn't very good. Had we blown out other teams within a few spots of them, such as #128 Florida Atlantic or #132 Kent State, we wouldn't be getting all of the Twitter hot takes about how the team is a force suddenly. Nothing wrong with being excited, and maybe we really have improved significantly, but let's see first how the games next week go.

Again, it was impressive and the best you could ask for, but they're still Butler. I'm not getting my hopes up... yet.

I disagree.  Butler is a way better team than those you mentioned.  Butler has won 4 Q1/Q2 games and have 0 Q3/Q4 losses.  Florida Atlantic has 0 Q1/Q2 wins and 5 Q3/Q4 losses, and Kent State has 1 Q1/Q2 wins and 4 Q3/Q4 losses.  On top of that Butler had been playing very well, beating #18 Marquette and DePaul on the road in their previous 2 games.  And the previous 3 games before that they lost to Creighton by 2 points, St. John's by 3 points, and Xavier by 2 points.   Butler's NET might not be sexy, but they've played a Brutal schedule (12 Q1 games already, will be 13 after NET updates tomorrow) and been competitive in a lot of those games.

Butler may not be very good, but they had been playing fairly well.  They had won 4 of 7 with the 3 losses by a combined 7 points.

While you are not getting your Hope's up and focused on NET ratings, you are missing some really good basketball of late.

They may end up 11-8 in conf, or 7-12.  That won't negate or show evidence of what has already happened, radical improvement over day 1

Making Plays - I never said those teams were as good as Butler, but on paper they count the same. Creighton will be a great test especially given how our last game with them went.

Beast - huh? Why would you assume I missed the game? I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it. I'm just cautiously optimistic because I know how quickly things can change.

Edit: Beast deleted their post I guess.

Do they count the same?  Because NET jumped up 10 spots to 68 beating Butler.  Any win, especially a home game, that jumps you up 10 spots in NET this late in the season is really good win to be excited about in my book.

I don't think NET would have jumped up 10 spots beating Florida Atlantic by 30 at home.  I believe Butler's metrics of how well that had been playing and St. John's having such good efficiency against them played a big role in such a big jump against a Q3 team at home.  This game also had a big jump in Kenpom, at 64 there right now.

Also, I don't want you to take it the wrong way like I'm starting an argument, I'm just saying that wasn't a small victory to win in that fashion against a team that was trending upwards and just beat a ranked team a few days ago.
