(POST GAME) #18 Seton Hall (MSG), Sat. Jan. 18, NOON, FOX / 570 WMCA

I think Anderson has found out just how tough eastern basketball is. He can prepare for his first losing season

I'm very proud of the Johnnies. They played a nationally ranked team and did really well. The Johnnies were in the lead most of the game. Ultimately the Pirates top talent regained control and won.

That's not an unexpected outcome for a team without a point guard or any consistent shooters. Grit and desire can only achieve so much.

Hard to be upset at the outcome today. I personally thought it was going to be a bloodbath so was more than pleasantly surprised that we took it to the wire. I was there and yes, the Hall fans were loud, but we held our own. Especially when you consider that their fanbase has far more motivation to be stoked. I love our team's grit and CMA is doing a hellava job considering the key pieces he's missing.

I agree completely with this post. I think the game we played today beats every team in the conference except for Seton Hall. An at-large tourney bid is a fading, long shot right now but I do think this team has another good run left in them. I can see them reasonably finishing 6-12 in conference to get to 17-14 before the Big East tournament. Get into the NIT and win a game or two to leave us feeling good about the first year under a new regime. I don't think they're talented enough to go on amazing run and start winning all their games but nothing about them indicates that they'll just roll over and give up.

Seton Hall has really good scoring guards and we don’t which makes it an uphill battle. I felt the game was similar to West Virginia. We won that one and lost this one. Just like we beat Arizona and lost to Butler. The road games so far just seem like too much for us. What was a little disappointing was that the Seton Hall fans were so much more into the game then our fans. I think that is solely based on record. If you come to the games then you can cheer. So I thought it was a B for the team and a D for the fans.
Could not disagree more about our fans. We were loud and we have several standing ovations when we went ahead and when Willard called a timeout. There were plenty of our fans, including me, in our section who were standing, yelling, screaming, chanting, etc etc. I don’t know why you would say our fans were not into the game.
I don’t want to get into an argument and of course there were St. John’s cheering but for a home game where I felt that the St. John’s outnumbered the Seton Hall fans, I heard much louder cheering for Seton Hall. At one point it sounded like we were playing Villanova and this was when the game was on the line. I would curious to see what others thought. I was in Section 107.
I’m not trying to argue with you. I’m just saying you’re wrong. ;-)

And I am in 108.
We can agree to disagree. Maybe I am just tired of the opposing fans sat the Garden. I expect it at the Villanova games and to a lesser extent at the Georgetown and Providence games but now Seton Hall and next year UCONN comes back. Even though the crowd was small at the DePaul game at least they don’t have any fans.
I agree 100% about the crowds at the Garden, I too am so tired of half to more than half of the crowd being the opposing team’s crowd. Except for, as you said, last week against DePaul. And also as you said, it will only be worse when UCONN comes back. But at least you won’t have to ride the trains back with drunk and obnoxious UCONN fans after a game! Unless, like me, you live in CT.

James, that's all great, but there's only one thing I care about, that's getting another another 5 wins, and finishing 16-15. Pleaseeeee
I'm starting to get real nervous now
How would that look. Coached 17 year at uab, Mizzou, and Arkansas, without ever having a losing season. If that happens this year to me that would be like the ultimate smack in the face.
I could see the joke: If you don't want to have your first losing season ever, don't go to SJU.

Looking at the schedule, I could see G-Town, X, Maq as win. That's 4.
Still have PC at home but they're 4-1 in the B.E. and up 4 @ Creighton with 2mins left.
Vs. Creighton but if they're on fire, we're done since we have no shooters?
Hopefully we beat DePaul at their home see did you see the Butler game today?

I'm praying.

Good observations by everyone. This game was ours but we found a way to lose in the last 5 minutes by combination of poor foul shooting by Roberts and poor game management by coach Anderson. Both of which are interrelated. Everyone in the building knew the Hall would foul Roberts liberally because putting him on the line is equivalent to a turnover. Steere has a softer touch and likely could have made those shots. He played 4 excellent minutes in the 1st half. His absence in the 2nd half was a Mullinesque level blunder on CMA's part. While we played good overall defense the defense on Powell was horrendous. None of our guards could stay with him. He was our only opponent in the last few minutes and there should have been a defensive assignment adjustment by coach. That never happened and while Rutherford played a decent game he was no match playing Myles alone as he drove by Rutherford at will. This is the first game where I thought the coaching decisions were as much a factor as our poor play. It's a shame this happened in a game where Mustapha Heron finally played a complete game. While Figgy played ok for the most part his defense is almost on a high school level. Part of that is the fact that he has poor lateral movement and bad hands on defense.
This game should have been a W.

Following the game my first thought was we've seen this same story before but after that with all their inefficiencies SJU played a tough game going all out vs a team that doesn't get much praise on Redmen.com but has an outside chance of reaching the final four in this down year of college basketball.

mjmaherjr not happy today. No A for effort. We had them in first half we got totally taken off guard by their pressure D second half disrupted our rhythm I hated the refs today and I despise no bronx pale ales in MSG.

What a train wreck of a day

For the record I applaud their effort, just got my mind on not having a losing record, so I know I sound like I'm not happy with the effort.
Well other then giving up 52pnts in the 2nd half, don't care shu or not, that's unacceptable.
So I have a different view; we did not lose this game because Roberts missed free throws or we didn’t make 3’s; Roberts shoots 33% and everyone knows we are offensively challenged. We were let down by our defense and our own unintelligent play. Examples, how many times in the 2nd half did Powell drive some 20-30 feet to lay the ball in with no real challenging rotation to maybe pick up a charge or make him pass? Too many. How many open set your feet jump shots did SHU get in the 2nd half after virtually none in the 1st. SHU had 15 turnovers at the half and not a one or even a sniff of one at the 10 minute mark of the 2nd half. After a tenacious impressive effort on D in the 1st half, we came out the opposite in the 2nd. Lack of focus and effort.
Unintelligent plays, two examples, down the stretch, Figueroa gets his 4th foul at somewhere around the 3 minute or so mark reaching 30 feet from the basket with SHU in no kind of offensive set, sending them to the line for nothing. He then fouls out a minute or so later.
A bit after the Figueroa 4th foul, Dunn commits, IMO, an equally unnecessary foul around mid court, diving on a player on the ground. Not a bad play in the 1st half of a game but horrible in that situation, you surround the player and make him make a play from his back, you don’t bail him out and send him to the line.
I don’t believe in moral victories and this team snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. No reason we are 1-5 in BE play except we beat ourselves. Others may disagree but I am sure I will make people on the board happy because I am out of here for a while. Just too frustrating to me and that is on me and my fanaticism, I get that.
pretty fair analysis

Great seats today, fun game and of course disappointed in the outcome. Scrappy team, easy to pull for, but a lot of holes. Roster will look quite different next year and hopefully new guys will help get SJU to a more competitive plane by year three of Anderson’s tenure.

Mike, I like you as a poster.
Just for the record, I didn't care that you cursed, heck I was even agreeing to myself.
I just don't like the double standard bs. I never once mentioned you, and because I didn't you never said anything.
Then when Logen mentioned it was you, I was like ahhh damn and here we go.
And sure enough it went.

I'm very vulgar also so why would I care if you curse.
Just wanted to state that.

If a mod tells me not to curse I'm not bringing someone else up and I rarely curse anyway. But I have no problem not doing it. iLogen was mad at me for something else anyway which I guess is why he brought me into it

It's all good.

That being said I'm still ducking pissed about this game :)

I'm hoping for a more competitive team by year two because with Posh, Cole, McGriff, Dunn and Williams if he stays we will finally have a deep backcourt. This year unfortunately the biggest hole is our starting guards who last started for low mid majors. Something has to give in the front court. We need not only better shooters but better finishers around the basket. I was hoping Steere would start the trend of bangers with a soft touch but CMA seems more intent on making teaching moments for long term development and improvement. Hope he is correct.
