Possible Coaching Candidates

I have a problem with Pitino, if he is hired, bringing some players from Iona with him. He is a great coach and recruiter, he should be able to attract transfers without screwing over the school that gave him an opportunity to get back into college coaching.

Someone, I am not sure who, stated that we need to get away from the win at all costs mentality. To take players away from a program that gave Pitino an opportunity to restart his career, should not even be an option.

Your words are falling on deaf ears, you are so correct that this board has evolved into a win at all costs mentality.
On top of that I have a huge problem bringing in a pg who may or may not be better than Posh who has given it his all over the course of the past 3 seasons. He took a chance on us when we were in the dumps and has exceeded all expectations. To start talking about moving him aside for a MAAC player is just mind boggling IMHO. As a fan base we show zero loyalty. Shameful.

If we are fortunate enough to hire Pitino, I trust he will do his best to turn is into a winning program. I am sure he will evaluate our current roster and recruits, try his best to retain those that can play a role next season. Explain to them that role and try to get them to stay. I am sure he isn't looking to poach Iona. Just like CMA he should do his best to look out for the kids at his old school. I would be surprised if he brings over more then one kid that he knows wants to leave. I am sure it will all work out. This will be his first season so he will need to make some tough decisions. I trust he will do the right thing if he is hired.

If any players want to follow Pitino to SJU this will result in a unwarranted situation. Pitino might prefer other transfers and the Iona players might feel he abandoned them by not bringing them to SJU
They might leave Iona for schools other than SJU if he doesn’t take them with him and that’s not a great situation. Only if they remain at Iona will Iona be happy but losing Pitino and player(s) to SJU will make Iona hate SJU even more than they do now.

I do not believe Pitino would raid Iona out of respect, but if a player does want to follow his coach, I think it will happen.

Some players are under recruited and should be playing in a higher level.

You should not be painting everyone on this board with a broad brush. Not everyone on this board has a win at all costs mentality. Not everyone is proposing moving Posh aside. And not everyone in the fan base shows zero loyalty. What’s shameful is you making those invalid and inaccurate assumptions.

Personally, as a consumer of the product SJU puts out I have always said I prefer no player ever transfer out. Not one. Yet they do, over and over, and the idea is supposed to be that is fine. They are "following their dream." Which now means looking for more money. Money that comes from us, the consumers of the product.

Loyalty works both ways. If I say free transfer is bad for the game (as a ticket buyer of the product) I'm the bad guy for not wanting players to "follow their dream." If I say, okay it's free transfer now, hopefully the team I watch makes moves to upgrade the team, I'm a bad guy then too? That seems harsh.

The players sued to get paid and now they do. The threat of legal action by the players also has led to free transfers. If they want to roll back those changes "loyalty" as a fan comes back into play. Good luck with that.

These young men (they are not kids, many of us, like them, had jobs at their ages), are now paid professionals. On top of that, they get to be "free agents" and seek the highest payday possible annually, with no salary cap. The other side of that is the guys who can't cut it are going to get swept aside. These are the rules the players want - and you can't have it both ways in life.

As a fan who pays good money for a product I expect the team I root for to do what it takes, within the rules, to win. Those rules now include constant player movement.

The players want it this way, I think it's very misguided to make the consumers, on this board or anywhere else, bad guys for trying to adapt to the system that the players desire.

Tony I never said the entire board and I never meant to paint everyone with the same stroke. If I should have said the majority of the board I stand corrected. I hope this clarifies my prior post.

Thank you. I still would argue if it’s the majority of the board but that’s not the point. It is not the entire board or the entire fan base. That’s the main point. And thanks again. 👍

As great a coach and recruiter as Pitino is, don't you think he can get better players than these three? Let's say Pitino comes, keeps Van, and all the core players and recruits stay, who are these players beating out. The constant theme throughout the season was we have talent, just need the right coach. Y'all can't have it both ways.
I'd take atleast the PG though.

There are no secrets anymore w social media/cellphones etc. Teams have been in the ear of at least 5 of our players/commits going back to the end January

If Pitino is here, the roster is changing big time.

Don’t kid yourself
Hope some of the top kids going in the portal can wait until after next weekend.

Oh I'm suggesting this is the 2 PG lineup that could actually work since Clayton is much more a scorer than distributor.

But Curbelo, another PG is leaving, so then the Iona PG replaces Curbelo and not Posh.
Posh can't avg 40minutes per right?

It's pretty simple: if a player like Clayton, who already has done everything there is to do in the MAAC wants to transfer to a better conference (which is the norm these days) and if Pitino feels he would help St John's, Pitino should absolutely take him and there's no reason to feel bad about that.

As for reaching out to all of their top players, yes I agree that'd be a bad look, but he shouldn't deny players coming here if they're already set to leave Iona. That's especially true given we're the closest Power team to Iona and he's their coach. If there's mutual interest, why exactly would it be better for them to move further away and play for a new coach?

Think from the perspective of the players, not just the school.
