Please Take A Deep Breath ... Keep an Open Mind ... Give the Guy a Chance
We need Borman here. But was he tied to Hurley, or would he come for Cluess? And he's not leaving his current gig for a cheap ass offer. Same with Hsu. I would even see if Boyle wanted to come, but I doubt he would, and his ego and Tim's ego would probably clash.
He'll certainly need a guy like Borman, IMO. Borman could be a pipeline to a handful of select players. We could also bring in someone like Hsu who is supposedly a 'grinder' and savvy recruiter. With that even being said, I'm still wary about the overall style of play.
Thanks General. We had so many great fans visit us in 114 this past season. It would be great to see you stop by next season.

Stay positive
Would be my pleasure
Put faces w names etc
Enjoy!

MJ,

I'm not rating Cluess higher than the three you listed. I just don't see any of them coming here. Pitino is not walking through our door ( I would love it if he did). Rhodes has a very good salary at VCU and probably turns us down as many others have in the past. I think Odom has eyes on other places. I am sure Cragg looked around enough to know that you don't stare a gift horse in the mouth - twice.

If they’re not going to bring Pitino in here (which I would love), then I would prefer Cluess with a guy like Borman to take over after he leaves , if not that then just go with Scheyer or St. Jean and have a young guy in here who can be around awhile if successful.

A poster on JJ (P1NSRT1PEZ??) says that Brey is coming to meet with Cragg on a Monday.

Not sure if this another coach getting on line to leverage his current team, a courtesy interview or genuine interest

I don't get it. I don't see any Norm in this hire. The pipe dream that a Hurley was coming here probably plays into the negativity. I expect that this hire will be well received by the press that covers us. Count me in as appreciating that we are finally bringing in a local guy that has a winning pedigree as a coach.

Who was the last local guy that earned his way by winning everywhere on the way up? No one earned this more than this guy. Fran was the last comparable that comes to mind, but Cluess has more history on his resume coming into the job.
I thought it was about getting the best option, and less about where the coach hails. Some of y'all seem stuck on centricities.

If he's the best option, so be it. But I don't think he is the best option nor do I care about a coach's locale. Let's see where those local HS coaches are when it's time for their highly-rated 4 and 5-star players to decide on their college destination.
Who is our best option in your view, Dink?
Keeping in mind, feasibility, cost, tenure time, and time line needs.
I already said Pitino about a week ago. I'd also take my chances on Odom (UMBC) and Rhoades (VCU). I might even be a tad interested in Becker (Vermont). I'm sure there are a few other coaches out there that I'd consider as well.

But I know enough about Iona and have seen my share of Iona games during the past several seasons. There's just something telling me this will only lead to more mediocrity. It's not that I think Cluess is a poor coach (I think he could hold his own in the Big East), but his teams defense or lack of doesn't resonate well with me. He's not gonna be able to overwhelm the opposition in the Big East, as he does in the MAAC.

Is he gonna be able to recruit at a fairly, high-level at St. John's? Is he suddenly gonna respect the defensive side of the ball? Is he gonna demand his team become a solid rebounding team? I'm wondering at his age, if he's too set in his ways of doing things, and having some form of success at it, to change how he goes about his business. I'll support Cluess (until he gives me reason to no longer support him), as I've done any coach since I've been a fan of the program.

I've rambled long enough, as you only asked about who I considered as "best options."
Thanks Dink. NP as you are a very 'sound' rambler. Lol.
You make thoughtful points.
I agree that the risks with Cluess begin with concerns over his ability to recruit BEC-level players and his 'no-defense' run 'n gun playing preferences.
I just think Cluess's work ethic combined with a solid staff will prove the difference, if he indeed becomes the next HC.
We shall see.

Just like Cluess, Bray is 60 years old. Also, probably too expensive for SJU.

Brey has had two down years in a row don't know what his team looks like next year but maybe he knows next year may be his last in South Bend and wants to control his own destiny. I would be surprised but can't hurt to ask. I still think Pitino is the best option but take your time and see what is really out there. You never know until you ask.

Turtle Neck Bobblehead Night in the works

Brey makes $1.3mm in 'school pay' and $2.4mm in total pay (camps/tv show??), and doesn't have a buyout as of 4/1/19.
Interesting if true, but can we afford to pay him a bump?

The point I am trying to make (which I think you get) is that people have been complaining that Cluess is too old (I do not agree with that) and Bray is the same age.

Also, I think Bray was on that top 27 salary list that someone posted the other day. If he were to consider coming here he would undoubtedly command a salary bump which would make him too expensive for SJs.
no buyout and if it was a choice that had the commitment of big donors would mean not as expensive to the school
If they hire Cluess, then I hope the fans that are pissed bout the hire, stop going to games.
Guaranteed in 5-6 you'll be pissed with awesome tim with no defense, if 3k only show up per game, they'll know that sju fans won't be putting up with their bs anymore, and we demand a top coach.
Don't be afraid to protest, and that's the only way, don't show up to games, and don't donate. Hurt sju in the pocket.
Maybe then they'll understand that the next hire they have to get right.
Just what we need: having to pay the remaining years on Cluess's contract, assuming (per your plan) he won't survive for more than two years because the school is losing attendance and, thus, losing money; and then having to buy out yet another replacement's then-current contract (which won't be cheap) from a school that will hold us hostage.

According to one site he is at $2.4MM a year, but was under $1MM per year up till 4 years ago. The money package may work for him.

Over 500 wins and he wins 65% with two recent runs to the elite 8. This is a no brainer if he is looking for a change after a 3-15 ACC season.

Yeah, he's likely too expensive unless big donors actually surface and pay the freight, but he seems like a great choice, should he have interest.
A down year this past season, and losing records in conference the past two, but otherwise a stellar coaching resume.
I worry about 'loyalty' with a guy like that but he is 60.
Think it's a long shot and still think TC is the next HC here, but we shall see.

What I s find puzzling is...

If MC declined to offer an extension and CM decided to leave >>>> why we would we owe him $?

If MC was then prepared to fire him, why didn’t he wait until he had his ducks in a row and some candidates partially vetted?

If this guy is interested he won't screw over Cragg. He is not Hurley looking to get more money.

If the report that he is coming in to talk is true I would bet that this could work out. If Cragg doesn't have the money I don't think he puts his buddy Brey in a bad position by going this far with it.

If the report is true.

Notre Dame doesn't appear to have any recruits for 2019 or 2020 (still early).

Obviously would still be a big hire, but just saying we might not get off to a fast start with Brey.

Know people hate it & can’t blame them, but Cragg is a process guy who tunes out the noise and will see who he thinks may be a good fit. Hopefully at end of the day he gets it right, but this is probably the toughest decision he has faced in his career. If he fails, he’ll deservedly get heat. This week should be telling & no use fretting about having coach on board quickly to re-recruit kids or land grad transfers, etc, This is just my sense of reality.
