Pitino - Love/Hate Thread

Here’s a.general question for every poster. Now forget the Pitino is a sketchy character mantra for a moment and answer this honestly…..If Rick Pitino was the coach of St Johns and he brought the program to the heights of a perennial top 20 program, would you IN ALL HONESTY be disgusted and turn away from the school/program, or would you embrace it and bask in the more then welcomed programs success? Yes I know it’s never going to happen in part due to the holier then now attitude of the school’s leadership. However, while Ricky, to say the least, exhibited more then questionable behavior, as a fan of a program that’s been in the dumps for quite some time, I myself would most likely welcome the success.

How do most of you feel……in all honesty?

Can I ask you a question to answer your question.   Let's make this very specific to holier than thou.   Let's say that all of the criminal sexual predator priests, some of whom were talented educators, got together and started a school.  Let's say that they were among the very best educators in the US, and kids that went there would have tremendous success?    Would you send your kid there?

Now let's reel that back closer to home.  Let's say St. JOhn's wanted to hire some of these despicable characters.   Yea, ridiculous scenario, because everyone would be against that.

Let's say all those shadowy university figures who accepted backdoor donations from famous wealthy people who wanted their kids at schools like USC and so on, were to become available to SJU.   Let's say they were all great fund raisers without the pay for play scheme.   Would you hire them?

As Panther noted, I believe, there is no end to this argument and no outcome fans on here can have effect except go root for Iona.

Well Beast were  you aware that such a scenario did exist at St John’s? Were you aware that the recent rap artist who performed at the basketball opening night was a three time convicted felon? That one of his arrests were for assault on his then girlfriend? Are you also aware that Both father Shanley and Mike Cragg were well aware of his arrest record but went through with his performance anyway? The school had no problem with his hire but Pitino  is a No no?

And as to your cutting comment regarding rooting for Iona? What does that have to do with my question which you never answered but used an over the top analogy to try to explain? And why should St. John’s fans root for Iona? I certainly will not cause Pitino is not coaching my alma matter.

sorry.  I didn't intend to wander into this again.  no point in this dialogue.  some people want pitino, some don't.   You can try to speak to Father Shanley.

We continue to torture ourselves with hypo questions that don’t lead anywhere .  While the dialogue and back and forth can be interesting reading , for a while , it’s like a fantasy .  Never to be realized .   Pitino is one of the best College Coaches ever !  That’s not debatable .    But , it’s unrealistic to think he would ever Coach St John’s at this point .  If Iona does  well and wins a NCAA game , Rick will get offers from some of the large State Schools that aren’t concerned with moral judgements .                                                               There are plenty of them as we all know ..  Too many to list .                                                              On the other hand , since we are all just expressing opinions , I believe Rick Pitino would have St John’s in the NCAA’s in 1 or 2 years and challenging for a BE Championship as well .         Another former Coach  , who is getting long in the tooth but, was a outstanding Coach was John Beilein .    He elevated every Program , he ever Coached , excluding Cavaliers . But , that’s not a fair comparison .                                                       CMA is going to be our Coach next year and maybe longer , possibly .   A lot will depend on whether the Team makes the NCAA next year . If not , Mike should retire gracefully with a nice negotiated package .   4 years , without the NCAA , would make Lavin and Mullin look like Wooden .

I am a proud graduate of St Johns and saw my first St Johns basketball game over 60 years ago. I have been a fan through all of the ups and downs and continue to support the program.

If Pitino were hired, no matter how successful, I would no longer support St Johns basketball. Is this clear enough for you?

So , your 60 plus years fan support is not in jeopardy .  I have been a fan since I was 10 . I’m 75 now .   We do have a lot of good years in that time frame , Panther .   Holding on to those , keeps us going and still hopeful . Don’t you think ?

Agree 100%. I would even consider stopping my donations.

And having an entertainer perform a show is in no way comparable to hiring someone to coach kids, lead our basketball program, and be a leading public figure for the University.

I don't support the notion of you not supporting SJU basketball.   I support your integrity in stating that though.   For those who know, your loss to the SJU community would be substantial.

Good question Jermane. I will support whoever the coach is that SJU hires, regardless of how I feel about them personally. Because I'm an SJU fan first and foremost. Coaches come and go, especially around here, but SJU will always be my alma mater. I may bitch and moan about the coach, but I'm still rooting for him to succeed.

Why does this conversation always stop at Pitino?

What about Izzo?
Few?
Self?

Why the obsession with Pitino? There are plenty of coaches who will never coach SJU you could discuss.

I am a Boston Celtics fan since 1957.  For the two years that Pitino pretended to coach the Celtics, I rooted for the Nets.

A lot of puritans on this thread. Bunch of choir boys here. Call Slick Rick what you want but, he is a winner. Hopefully a win tmw.

The most tiresome thread on redmen.com; and I thought some of the COVID threads were bad.

Because we aren't sure if Pat Kennedy is still alive or not and his name has been in every coaching search rumor since Mahoney left :)

At his most recent stop, he was 12-42 . . . and his most recent stop was Pace.

This is the first president/AD combo in a long time where I'm 100 percent sure we wouldn't try to contact him.
